Some people say this was a brilliant move to focus less on trying to get people to buy consoles and to start acquiring studios to have a better release cadence for games but it's more of an indictment on Sony as they've more or less slept walked into the position they are in right now.

The average consumer doesn't give a shit about that. They rarely even buy exclusives, but the optics that exclusives exist are somewhat of a selling point or attraction. It adds perceived value even though a consumer may not end up taking advantage of it. Right now the discourse is why buy an xbox over any other platform when you can play those same games on another platform, which also have exclusives even if nobody plays them. I trust Microsoft know what they're doing because they're trillion dollars for a reason but still. They could've managed it a bit better.

Having a positive brand image matters to investors. If Microsoft end up having to kill off the xbox console because of these moves it'll be because the investors deem it to be baggage. Appeasing investors isn't what you think it is.

then they decided to spend a fuckhuge fortune buying the biggest game publisher in the world and another smaller but still massive publisher and now they can say "yeah microsoft made those games"

the problem NOW is theyll never make their money back if they were xbox exclusive because people stopped buying those so now their games are everywhere and theyre just a publisher and the xbox console is just "the console with gamepass on it"
