Doom 2016 has Samuel Hayden, the head of the UAC facility on Mars who very clearly thinks extracting energy from Hell is a good thing even if he doesn't like demons
The end of the game sets him up to be the main villain of the next game by teleporting you away so he can continue to get energy from Hell with your demon sword
Presumably this'd lead to you fighting robots or something in between demons
The very next game has him find clean, non-demon powered energy offscreen, he gets his ass beat by demons, and then he becomes your comedic relief mission command telling you shit like "no Doomguy, do NOT fire yourself directly into the heart of the superdemon"
And then in the DLC it turns out he was actually an angel all along
I don't think ID Software understood what was cool about him in 2016 at all.
