Delusional, even at the end of the game with everyone whooping Renoir's ass, he just kept repainting himself and being fine. Aline had to intervene to stop him for good. Nonpainters can't defeat painters, they can just stagger them. The paintress got smacked down long enough for Renoir and Alicia to kick her out. Renoir got smacked down long enough that Alicia and Aline could've kicked him out but they talked and he just left. Alicia got smacked down long enough that Verso could let baby Verso stop painting the canvas. Gustave made the expeditioners strong enough to kick the shit out of all kinds of nevrons but the lumina converter can't touch free manipulation of actual chroma that painters have.

Alicia didn't deserve that. Reminder, she was a traitor bitch who sided with the Writers. That she got disfigured from a betrayal from the Writers was her just desserts. It is unfortunate that Verso suffered because of Alicia's actions. The thing that separates a painter from a non painter is mostly how much Chroma they have. You see it with painted Renoir, he has mountains of Chroma compared to Gustave at that point, so he's effectively painter tier and can shrug off damage + instant refresh himself. Verso killed a post Renoir battered Alicia despite not being a painter, because their Chroma levels were pretty much equal at that point from her over exerting herself and not claiming all the Canvas' chroma yet.

And risk her not killing the paintress? Verso has one goal and everything that goes against the destruction of the canvas can't be allowed. That's also why he let Gustave die, even though he was right there and had the ability to save him.
