The show tried to mend it by giving Abby more legroom and altering how it plays out - and then had her do an elongated villain monologue speech, and a dramatic camera pan over the golf clubs as a knowing nod to the fans about what was about to happen, accidentally tripling down on the problem and turning her into an unsympathetic shitlord again.

Consider this, the Fireflies are a group of desperate humans grasping at straws. They are so hell bent to make a cure-all that will bring back the old world, that they're blinded from the Hell they're bringing to earth themselves. Joel's story is about how you need to take care of your own and make the world better for your children. You can keep the Fireflies trying to make a cure, but it's best to leave it as a Hail Mary. Something that will haunt Joel for the rest of his life, wondering if he really should've let Ellie die. And he has to constantly remind himself there was already a pile of bodies that Ellie would have been thrown on top of.
