it's a clever Lovecraft-lite that's kind of lacking in difficulty unless you do a solo run, and pretty heartwarming in some very weird ways

My favorite RPG is still Crystal Project which is sad because 1 guy did a better job than entire studios. Crystal Project has absolutely perfect end game balancing with many bosses requiring unique strategies that you can't overpower.

Refan is my first JRPG I've ever played, I just downloaded the prologue on steam.
Its all talking and cutscenes and I've just gotten to the guards barracks, at what point in time does the gameplay, character build customization start?
Seriously the whole game has been one giant cutscene so far, I want to see if this game is for me and I'm not to sure.

Expedition 33 is a better JRPG

It's good but there are surely better atlus titles. There's only like 4 actual dungeons in the game and 2 that are like heists with little/no enemy encounters to raise exp and you're expected to do bounties and other side quests to raise your levels in between deadlines. The last one is basically two fields with boss rush segments. I think the game peaked at Virga Island which is pretty much the middle of the game and the game has given you 80% of the archetypes by then.

Persona 3-5, which Metaphor is effectively just a fatnasy version of, are well known for their very story heavy openings. The first real dungeon in Metaphor, which you unlock on 6/11, is probably like 10 hours in, and even then you're not really in the main structure of the game and will go through some more story to set that up afterwards.

I prefer each of them to Metaphor as well, though I still like Metaphor, but they still do have very long intros, like Metaphor. 3 probably has the shortest one and it's still long enough.
