I liked it more when it was ambiguous, getting into Ashley's fucked up thought process was a big part of the appeal.

Chapter 1 is about an unhealthy co-dependent relationship and not just a funny incest one. I did not find Andy to be one-note at all. The game starts by showing him to be somewhat normal before revealing he is as messed up as his sister. Ashley is more outright crazy and erratic but not edgy.

I feel like the characters were fleshed out enough, I don't need to know the whole story of someone's life to know what makes them tick.

If anything, after the flashbacks and introspections of episode 3 their characters make less sense. Their whole dynamic in episode 1 doesn't really fit the backstory.

Like how Andy had spent the past however many years not even touching Ashley and now they sleep together like it's no big deal or how all their fights about Julia barely get a mention and the girl they locked in a box years earlier is still the biggest thing that shapes their relationship. It kind of makes sense going from episode 1 to 3 and watching their relationship develop, but it doesn't when you think about it chronologically.

Of course it eliminated the nonsensical mom x son incest pairing and made Julia an uninteresting little retard, and Andrew more obsessed with Ashley than he lets on. But I thought the appeal of the game was always meant to be incest, and that initially the fanbase was all about that specifically.

I think it's a weird thing how chapter 3 seems to have some half baked stuff in there or at least, seems not completely finished. I understand that the chapter is pretty sizeable but to me it seems weird that some characters get artwork and some don't. I don't know if it's a perspective thing, like "I don't care or mind this character at all, so their sprites are whatever". The whole section with the campers is the best example of this. I like that there's 3 different outcomes for telling them what ashley is in relation to andrew but everything else there seems rushed.

I loved this stuff in the first game, like Nina not getting a name or Renee and Douglas being just Mom and Dad

they sacrifice their parents to demons and eat them, but somehow the saddest scene in this game is when andrew beats his sister (who deserved it 57849 times over)

I wouldn't call it the saddest, but I did use quite a few tissues during it.
