Tactics Ogre

Incredible game. It's crazy that Square made a story like that on the SNES, it easily eclipses modern RPGs/tactics games.

It's fun, but rather brainless and horribly unbalanced like all of Matsuno's games.

It's crazy that Square made a story like that on the SNES

Square has literally nothing to do with the original release of TO, it was released and published by Quest.

the animations are too slow and tehre:s no strategy

it should be good but they:re retarded. why are there finishing moves? why does everything need to be grinded?

why do they focus on grinding finishing moves and weapon types rather than positioning and strategy

the only good game he ever made was fft

horribly unbalanced

how so
there's nothing in the lategame thats truly OP

Why is it so fucking expensive, though? Isnt it a remaster of a PS1 game?

I'm trying to think what is my goat from tactical rpgs... I don't know it's a toss up. I never finished this one either, only one I recall 100% multiple times is 3houses. I need to play some more undoubtedly. Recommend me some.

Early game is archer central, lategame is spellcaster central, nothing about TO is balanced at any point in the game, in any version of the game.

there's nothing in the lategame thats truly OP

You must be joking, a single warlock with Dark/Draconic can solo any map with ease and that's not even one of the actual top tier caster classes in the game, Necros for instance are pants on head retarded due to having Ninja tier RT for some reason.

It is peak turn-based strategy.

it's peak Squenix meddling with things they shouldn't and ruining it by making it more gay. the Saturn version is the best. and thankfully that emulation has improved tremendously in the last five years so I could dodge the nu-bastardization.

you don't play the remaster, you ignore it and play the psp version

It is peak turn-based strategy

The game is braindead easy. Tactics and Triangle Strategy are more challenging games.

what do you mean by tactics? I hope you don't mean final fantasy tactics. that game is so fucking brain dead easy... Honestly was excited to play that game since it has been hyped up for years. Finally played it on a chinkheld and it was the most braindead easiest shit imaginable...

Unbalanced to shit and traversing the maps takes way too long.

Still FF Tactics provides more challenge than TO, in my experience playing these games. TO was my first Tactics-like game.

Anyway, the most challenging of those three is Triangle Strategy on hard/NG+.

I dont know about original TO but reborn has legit difficulty spikes that are damn near impossible without a specific setup, and you can't just grind to overcome challenge since your levels are fixed to story progression. like both of the 1v1 fights early on, vyce and that one commander. those fights were harder than anything I experinced in fft

those classes you mentioned are truly not necessary to finish the game. almost every level can be finished with a bunch of heavy armor bruisers and enough tenacity. Push through the center and create a big scrum, the enemy fails to focus fire or down a single unit, then you just snowball. Cheesy game breaking tactics found in wikis are way overkill. Getting the good ending in an Ogre game is like a joke or something because it can't be done without an internet connection.

Getting the good ending in an Ogre game is like a joke or something because it can't be done without an internet connection

oh but I did get the good (princess) ending by genuinely being a good boy in all dialogue choices

Its not peak strategy or anything, its probably a little bit more complex than the traditional average Jrpg but its combat is not that deep or near the peak.
I think Larian games are much more engaging and fun and strategic than it for example.
Games like ToEE are also much more complex and fun
I also prefer Fire Emblem PoR and 776 over it.

Is it a good game? yes it is, but its not peak.
Does it need more attention? also yes

Yeah larian games came out in the 2010s+ ofcourse they are more complex and have better gameplay. But for it's time I think it still holds up.

i don't like how the MC is a Mary sue

I hate Octopus niggers with a passion
theyre the only hard enemies

The characters are so infuriating though that I just couldn't finish it. Especially picrel.

how do you spell her name? cashew-a?

Yes true, I'd say XCOM is the only one ahead it.

Final Fantasy Tactics is infinitely better. The sprites in this game are shit, the story way too long and needlessly shitty.

I liked Reborn
Quite a lot.
The voice acting adds a lot and the gameplay is different enough to warrant a replay.

yeah I liked it a lot until the palace of the dead. I think I wanted to get deep in there just for some rare katana to make samurais not shit.. but I ended up quitting before I even got down that far. I think I got to around level 60 and the katana was around level 80+

It's a weird spelling of Cathia, another form of Catherine.

I considered getting it before, but 50 fucking bucks for a remaster?

Kaitie-aw, say it fast.

Which version has the best systems and gameplay?

You think? I turned the voice acting off immediately, I hated it.

psp

I reloaded an old save and lost hours of progress when I spotted that saving Catiua was one branching path and not just what happens there. Went back and let her fucking kill herself, fuck that dumb cunt.

Isometric tactics games always play so fucking slow

based. absolutely worst girl

I think Larian games are much more engaging and fun and strategic than it for example.

Nah, they suffer from the same exact problems, if not worse problems, D:OS2 is somehow slower than the modern TO and more broken as well.

Games like ToEE are also much more complex and fun

Even with Co8 and T+ ToEE is ridiculously braindead, like all D&D RPGs, like all Troika games.
Sure, in theory it is "deeper" due to certain mechanics that simply do not exist in something like TO, but the truth is none of those are relevant in actual gameplay terms when a single martial can chaintrip every enemy in the game to death and everything boils down to just getting bigger dices than the enemy, which is trivial to do.
Not to mention, ToEE as a campaign is hot garbage, TO has its low points but nothing in it is as bad as Hommlet.

Very cool game, wasted hours on it.
It has a billion of little things i dislike (like finishers) but the good outweight the bad.

None, serious answer.

I can’t stand any of the characters of this game. Guess they’re too lifelike and non-anime to be engaging.

I have over 100 hours in Reborn having done an entire Palace of the Dead run on the Law route but I've still never finished the main story

There are a bunch of good characters
Most importantly it's one of the very few games of this type where the MC himself doesn't suck

It's had enough attention, it's time to make some new fucking games instead of re-re-re-re-re-releasing Tactics Ogre.

No, the PSX version is a re-release of an SNES game.

I don't know about that, Denim's not particularly interesting or compelling in any of the routes, the game doesn't really focus on him all that much either compared to other entries in the genre, the only interesting thing about him is how much shit he gets in the different routes but as a character he's pretty paper thin.
Vandal Hearts 2 has a good MC, but on the other hand the supporting cast is largely uninteresting if not sorta bad outside of a couple of characters, TO has a very interesting supporting cast even if Denim himself is kinda weak, in fact I'd argue that Denim is only "good" as an MC by proxy of the supporting cast interacting with him and him being sort of a plot device/player tool to interact with the world in TO.

where the MC himself doesn't suck

not sure about that

Triangle Strategy

You must be fucking joking. It plays more like Into the Breach than an actual strategy RPG.

Still waiting for the FFT remaster, any day now.

Well keep waiting faggot

hurr give me the same game over and over don't make anything new

Fuck off

That's how these people want these games to play like.
They completely ignore the RPG part and want to be challenged by puzzle games.

Reborn is probably best overall, but its not worth the AAA price greedy fucks at SE want. Just pirate it.

Go and have fun with devil may fantasy 16, it's plenty new.

Whoa there anon.
Subtlety and nuance aren't allowed here. Neither is being a part of two different franchise fan bases. You MUST wage jihad over one particular series being better than the other.

Oh shit I didn't consider that a bad game exists, they should just recycle old shit instead of trying anything new then. Of course bad games existed before FFT as well so they really should never have made it in the first place either. Fucking moron.

peak turn-based strategy

Except it's not a strategy game.

tell me bros how do i get good at these grid based turn based games??
i am good at puzzles and some other tactical or turn based games but these grid games always filter real hard

i played bannersaga and got owned by second fight against dredges
and when i looked up somebody else their positioning and moves were pretty similar but somehow they came out unscathed and enemy AI acted differently

i really like the idea of this cool chess i just can't wrap my head around it

me when i move the goalpost just a few continents ahead and hope nobody notices

It's total fucking dogshit and I can't believe you fucking losers made me buy it

I am going back to Open XCOM

like are there some basic rules/ guidelines on how to play these games
because i keep getting owned as soon as the tutorial ends

Do moves that will generate more turns for you down the line and waste enemy turns.
That's the global tactic.

Action economy is king
And dead enemies don't do damage

The only thing that is good about this game is the story and the art. The gameplay itself is dogshit in all levels.

I thought it was OK. Gameplay was decent but story was kind of dry.
Disgaea is the better SRPG by all measures

etna.png - 1024x1024, 1.19M

recommend me some srpgs from the vita/3ds gen and earlier. i want to play some portably. not switch games since that’s too big for a portable.

dude fire emblem

lmao

It's pretty good yeah.
Every time Square Enix builds some good will with me, like with the TO port, they ruin it almost immediately.

i played bannersaga and got owned by second fight against dredges

That's probably just a symptom of trying to play it like other games where you focus fire enemies to reduce their numbers. Bannersaga requires the opposite due to forced alternating turn order, which is counterintuitive and honestly not a design choice I like

how do I get enough MP for the big ass spells?

yee ill play those first then. which is the first gba one

First release is 6
First release in the west is 7
7 is also a prequel to 6

Played reborn, pretty quickly got frustrated with the underpowered AI characters locked to the team who kept on dying and tping away. Should I have stuck with it, does it get better?

Dunno man i only ever played the PSP one modded so i could control guests.
You could make highly mobile units with ranged heals but whatever.

If you've enjoyed everything else about the game other than the forced companions, then yes it gets better.

I forgot to add that you can give the forced companions items to make them somewhat more helpful.

game called tactics OGRE

game does not feature OGRES (shrek or fatguy)

its just gay twink shit for fags and teenage girls

gay

there are you retarded nigger

dude, just think of like chess but with extra steps and magic, also this game is pretty forgiving, considering you can undo your choices mid battle

Into the Breach

That's a good thing though

esl game for browns, I rest my case!

retarded nigger calling others esl? delete your comment dumbass

plays more like Into the Breach

Damn, even better then.

Let me say this in a way you can understand, OOK OOK me not retarded nigger there are you retarded nigger, me not!

The PC release had a ton of threads when it came out a few years ago. I wish we could turn off the card spawns though. Otherwise the OG has too much archer bias.

Incest

I never played a turn based rpg with good combat for me tactic rpgs and RTT are the only good turn based game
Never got around playing Tactics Ogre yet though, I have it on my list

It's longbow bias more than archer bias but yeah

Tactics Ogre shits on FFT.

Still FF Tactics provides more challenge than TO

Tactics is easily broken even if unintentional, and you have to go out of your way to gimp yourself so you can have any semblance of challenge.

The PSP version turned the game into a grindathon. If you can't play the original, the remaster is the next best thing.

To each their own I suppose.
Having Canopus voiced by Lancer's VA was real fun for me.
IIRC the eng dub makes them sound british or something so that's funny.

I love both, eat shit.

Banner saga is a weird one.
Like the other anon said, you'd think the correct way to play is to reduce threat by eliminating enemy numbers.
But damage is tied to health and turn order is enforced, so you're actually incentivized to leave enemies at 1hp and pull ahead by giving them "dead" turns where you only take chip damage.
Don't think I've seen any other game try a system like that.
I get the vision, trying to make it so a cornered opponent becomes more dangerous and gets something of a "battle high" by getting more actions a turn, but playing around it is weird and not that fun imo.

Larian games

every non-grid TRPG suffers from the exact same issue of

spread the FUCK out

try to herd enemies into AoE radius

sometimes they listen to you and get corralled

spam AoE and win

sometimes they split up instead

pick them off one by one and win slower

Reborn, but it does look the worst and has some mild censorship

incest

he doesn't know

Isn't there a PSP mod that actually balances the game? Is that any good?

I like the gba game more
But this is a solid 2nd

They’re not really related

And she’s legit the only character MC shows glimpses of attraction to

There is one that completely changes the game that's more balanced called One Vision.
If you want to do minor tweaks you can just use custom cheats. You can do a lot with them.

For all its supposed tactical depth, the game gets very easy once you figure the intended / meta party and play style out.

That's every Japanese made tactical game.

The game is missing waifus. Everyone has the same dry joyless personality.

I mean there is a war going on.

faggot mad because there's no anime UWU underaged jailbait catgirl with gigantic sparkling eyes and knee high socks who is also OP as fuck

there's a war in every other jrpg, but there's still

anime UWU underaged jailbait catgirl with gigantic sparkling eyes and knee high socks

everywhere

Tried both with the base game and the one vision mod

I'm not sure why but it seems like the AI is utter shit. Even worse than FFT and FFT's AI was beyond shit

I'm not spammnig archerso r magic but it feels like 9/10 the ai has no clue what to target and we get shit like Denam as a knight with like 140 health out of 300 being targeted non-stop despite the melee doing at best 30% to hit for like 10 damage where as a fucking cleric is going to take 80 damage and die in 2 hits but noooo let's all target the knight that won't die

Crystal Project, as a pure turn-based JRPG, is 10 times harder than Tactics Ogre, and that's with Crystal Project in Hard mode instead of Chaos mode (as in, the "fuck you" mode)

story like that on the SNES, it easily eclipses modern RPGs/tactics games.

People are far more educated nowadays and hence we have much deeper stories.

Shallow, slow, has zero interesting characters

cashew is the worst character and ruins the fourth chapter

I hate that these shitty chibi characters became the norm for so many SRPGs instead of the much superior FFT.

FFT has chibi characters too you retarded mouthbreather

Deman is pretty based sometimes.

file.jpg - 1920x1080, 481.29K

I really liked it, but I don't think I can play it again with all the grinding I did.

Tactics ogre is shit
bad music, units are ugly, classes are boring, same maps all the way, battles are slow and boring, story is shit, with some plot twists on every end of chapter

there was another game, Yggdra Union, that is tedious too, and gets rererereleased every 3 years on new platform, but it is boring and inconsistent too

indian post

banner saga sucks ass, as someone who likes srpgs and has been playing them for like 30 years, the design in banner saga within the first 30 mins is just abysmal. you can't tank shit, despite the game giving you a tank archetype character immediately, if you ever take damage you get owned because it cripples your ability to deal damage with no way to recover it, and yet in this design space enemies always outnumber you by 3 and 4+ x the numbers
sure the game might open up as it goes on and give you options, but at the start it certainly does not and the experience is miserable for it

Bought it the other week on sale, will get around to playing it at some point
Law or chaos first?

The PS1 game is untouchable.

Law

so what's non-shit then
