I don't understand American cartoons. They started intentionally drawing ugly characters in the 90s to be subversive, then they stopped making subversive shows but kept the ugly and poorly drawn characters.

The budget on that Darkstalkers show was fucking nothing. This was point in the 90s where nobody gave a fuck and just churned out whatever as fast as possible after the success of the 23-minute toy commercial shows of the 80s.

The only ones that have a near 50/50 split are ones that have a vast majority of female characters. She-ra is a perfect example (and if you want to count butch women then it's like 80/20) despite the show being like 90% women.

I live in a city that has been rated numerous times as one of America's 10 most attractive cities. It's America, so a good amount of the people anywhere you go are obese, but the people who aren't obese are generally at least passable.
I do think white women are the 2nd ugliest race of women though, and I'm a white man. A lot of people here are mixed so maybe that contributes to people not being so ugly.

The character designer for the Darkstalkers cartoon was Frank Brunner who also did the character designs for X-Men TAS. He just didn't give a shit about Darkstalkers and it was something he half-assed which is kind of a shame because he's an otherwise great artist. His Doctor Strange art from the '70s rules. American Darkstalkers was just a shitty, infantile saturday morning cartoon that he didn't care about.
