The "Life" level tiers are pretty heavily gated by the story quests in the early game, and the early game is very long. Compared to AC the content unlocks are less restricted by time passing and more by the amount of time you put into the game itself.
Grinding is only necessary if you want to complete side content but the side content is the fun of a game like this.
You can certainly play for a couple of hours, stop, and feel like you've made progress.

90% of the combat challenges overlap with each other, if you focus on only one and decide to level the others later you're going to need to backtrack low level zones. It saves a lot of time if you enter a room of spiders and see that Merc and Paladin need 9 each for example, respawning the room takes a second and you can just kill 18 of them on both classes instead of having to revisit that room 10 hours later.

Bigger and better, my only complaints are that the towns aren't as well designed as the original (they're not bad here, just not as great) and that its very heavy on the mayan tropical island theme as opposed to the standart western fantasy of the original (which i prefer) but even then its very good.
