This was on sale the other day and bought it on a whim. Trying to decide if I want to return it or actually open it and play.
I've played 2 other Ys games so far but beaten neither, Memories of Celceta and 8. I have tons of fun with each of the games. Love exploring, finding new shit, the combat, visiting new towns, etc. But the games overstay their welcome for me after about 40 or so hours. I expect this to be the same but I couldn't pass up on the $30 price. What does this game do better than MoC and 8, and what does it do worse? I haven't played 9.

Play Ys Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin. Ys I & II Chronicles is also good, but know that the gameplay is very much of a bygone era.
OP said Ys games overstay their welcome, why would he want more filler content/bloat? Unless Proud Nordics adds an ending where Adol fucks Karja and gets her pregnant, there's no reason to touch it.
Combat is fluid but the challenge design isn't really there.
Bosses can be ok.
Less bangers in the OST but still good.
Character progression is cool with the nodes.
Nicely animated and runs like butter.
Too many side characters you don't care about unlike 8.
Ship traversal goes from annoying to just not annoying, never great.
Story and main cast is nice.
It's pretty fun at its core, it just needed more enemy encounter scenarios and difficult dungeons that drain your resources.
Just wait for proud edition or whatever it's called.
Will any game ever top AC Black Flag for ships?

If you were able to tolerate two Ys games already then it is impossible for you to be disappointed in another
Supposedly they are fixing the story and rebalancing the game or something, it isn't just some expansion content.
They teased new characters and a new landmass.
He didn't finish either, and I don't blame him. Ys has never been deep enough to be some 50 hour JRPG. The earlier, shorter ones milk the formula for exactly what it's worth and nothing more.

Anything pre 7 is really.
Because they're short and sweet action RPGs that emphasize the fast combat over most everything else. It lacks the bells and whistles of modern Ys games but in return, they do one thing and do it very well.
They're from when the series had minimal story and were just short and sweet action games that focused on boss fights. Ys Seven is when the games started getting longer.
Because I do tend to like them for a solid amount of time and love exploring, heading to new towns, getting new equipment, etc.
Interesting/ I think I'll check them out. I'm sorta leaning towards returning Ys and keeping my promise to not buy any new games until I've beaten Stellar Blade.

Te fuckers announced the week I found a very cheap second hand copy of X. Reminds me of when Sony announced they were giving away the Uncharted Trilogy the day after I finished beating the PS3 versions of those games.
the games got longer and longer but they never really got better or really evolved to make that length feel like it was worth it, the stories are still just absolutely generic jrpg shit but now the cutscenes take 10x as long

fast enough. you can also run up walls and glide and use a grappling hook + the charge attack makes the fights more dynamic by adding a source of mana which you can charge up while performing other actions. you also have a buff to go along with your ultimate. all of this makes the gameplay an objective upgrade, and i'm probably forgetting stuff
I'll only buy it if it doesn't have a meme dogshit localization.

Really it can be 1, 2, Felghana, and Origin. Just avoid Ark of Napishtin, it fucking sucks. 1 kind of sucks in the first half too, but Darm Tower more than makes up for it.
In all honesty she probably did have the most developed relationship with Adol out of all of his girls. I actually ended up liking her a lot because of it. They did actually feel like a newlywed betrothed couple.
Ys 8 was genuinely one of the most compelling games I've played, something about it just sucked me in and made me want to 100% it.
I've seldom Gosling'd at a game harder than I did in chapters 6 and 9
I just create my own personal headcanon at the end of every Ys game.

What was wrong with the story?
They didn't mention changing anything about the existing story. All the new stuff seems to be additions to the side with a new area and new characters.

I enjoyed the game more than IX, I just wish it had some environmental variety instead of 90% of the islands being standard beaches/grasslands. I played it not even half a year ago and a lot of it already blends together in my mind.
