Chrono Trigger. Not because it's smart, or makes much in the way of sense, but because it doesn't actually give a shit about more complicated things to bog down its themes and pacing, and instead blitzes through the wondrous and cataclysmic consequences both of time travel.

He tried saving Mayuri by whisking her away from hitmen and then she randomly gets pushed into an oncoming train because she "had" to die. The story needs to make up its damn mind about how the rules are supposed to work.

For me it's groundhog day or all you need is kill styles where the character is actively trying to escape the nearly impossible loop, as opposed to S;G where the time travel is to fix an outcome the characters don't like.

Actually no, its the first one with Steins;Gate you only see the future being played out that is as you mentioned latter, its explained in Steins;Gate 0 opening sequence in the first few hours of the game, he's black pilled trying to save Makise Kurisu desperately and failing to do so leads to the bad end world where they finally figure out a way to save her after many tries. Its convoluted but its basically just him trying to save someone else who's getting killed because of pre-fixed path the universe set out, if he doesn't do it perfectly its an impossible loop that will keep him trapped.

S;G is different because Okabe is the architect of his own prison, it is almost entirely self-inflicted.

I didn't like Steins;Gate because the weeb characters were just so cringey and annoying to listen to.

The real reason it worked is because Steins;Gate occurs inside a simulation called GAIA supercomputer. Luka as a boy or a girl was registered as the same person, so what essentially happened was that whomever was 'observing' the simulation just searched for one of the iterations where Luka was born a guy.

That's not true, the convergence point was Mayuri's death itself, she probably would've just spontaneously combusted if all else failed to kill her. This is important narratively because Okabe (and the readers) first assumption when he kills Kurisu would be that her death was also a convergence point which isn't the case
