One is that they’re broad so all that will do is make everything more expensive because now foreign goods are more expensive. Those includes foreign components used to make goods produced domestically so the domestic goods will also be more expensive. Thirdly even if the imported goods have a much higher price than domestic the rise in demand for the domestic goods will increase the price anyways. And fourth is if they don’t raise prices from demand then there is nothing stopping domestic producers from raising their prices as long as they slightly undercut foreign competitors

But wait you say. This can lead to higher domestic production and more jobs!

Except 1. That would take many years, even decades, assuming we have an available labor pool of workers to fill those jobs, assuming they are even willing to work those jobs 2. Wages in America are higher so the cost of production will rise, making the domestic goods more expensive anyways 3. It will cost American consumers hundreds of thousands of dollars per job, it is a highly inefficient way of creating jobs. It would unironically be more effective for the government to just subsidize domestic production through taxes. But that requires negotiating through Congress and Trump, the master negotiator doesn’t want to do that and 4. Trump keeps changing his mind on the tariffs so businesses can’t properly plan or prepare for them. Why would I take an enormous risk and invest domestically, if I have no idea if Trump or America as a whole will even keep the tariffs as they are 1 month from now, 1 year from now, 4 years from now? Businesses are more likely to just “wait and see”

1) Foreign shit is very often used as an input for an American product. For example, the 2018 steel/aluminum tariffs cost 75 jobs for every 1 job that was gained in the steel/aluminum industry, because American companies needed to pay more for those critical inputs.
2) Counter-tariffs will hurt foreign demand for American goods, particularly US agriculture which is heavily exported.

You can look up Smoot-Hawley if you want a reference point for how a similarly all-encompassing trade war played out last time it was tried. Somewhat ironically, that was what caused congress to decide they couldn't be trusted with tariffs and that authority over it should be handed to the executive.
