Most cutscenes end with you taking instant damage that is usually unavoidable unless you skip the cutscene.
Game is padded to hell and back with 4 bosses you fight 3 times each, one (three) of which requires you to constantly swing at a glyph on the wall but Dante has to be completely against the wall or else he swings at the air in the direction of the boss, said boss also have a grab attack that forces you into an enemy gaunlet with yet another full boss refight inside of it every single time.
Enemies and bosses are designed around staying away and spamming devil trigger, its ironic people call 2 the shooting game when melee combat is the most heavily discouraged in 1.
Final boss forces you to play a shmup section with reversed controls followed by a 2nd phase where devil trigger is the only time you can cause damage at all.
Game is an absolute shitshow that requires item abuse to even get through it, especially the final boss, fuck doing any of that without a stockpile of devil stars. DMC2 being the worst game is the biggest fucking meme, 1 is so much worse, its not even close.

let me elaborate: lady receives a sort of batman-esque origin story, with some minor deviation. as a young girl, she's spirited and fearless, a motivation within her has sparked to face evil and put it in its place. so one day she and her family are walking home from a trip to the theater, and they're attacked by a demon in the subway. this whole scene is very reminiscent to what happens to bruce wayne, but the similarities end when the demon is suddenly hit by a train. although unharmed, this shakes the family and arkham especially, who vows to attain more power for the sake of being able to protect his family. he begins research on demons and eventually he's convinced that he needs their power, so he injects himself with demon blood and in doing so transforms into a bestial monstrosity who ultimately murders his wife in front of lady's eyes. during the attack he sets the house ablaze and lady manages to escape but he gets consumed by the flames in the process.
so arkham/lady's family makes and appearance but yes, their roles are reduces significantly.

I just don't think it affects the story THAT much to have civilian demons in the background on its own. There are still plenty of evil demons, big mindless beasts and brutes that are okay with killing random civilians, or the guys that invaded the human world under Mundus probably weren't the best guys. People complain about subversion but I don't think it's a subversion, there's so much in this series of people of human origin becoming evil and demonic and people of demonic origins being good and human.

We don't know how that comes into play with the demon civilians, they haven't gone into detail. But it's in line with the games that demons aren't all intrinsically evil, even ignoring that this is an adaptation that doesn't affect the main IP. The game is called devil may cry. Multiple plots are about humans embracing cruelty and becoming devils or devils embracing humanity and becoming heroes.
