The only thing you won’t be doing is playing PC games natively, but I just use Moonlight to stream those from my PC, playing them without performance or visual compromises in 1080p instead of 720p.

You know what's got better battery life than the retroid pocket? My phone, which I always have on me and can also play emulators. Just get a backbone or something. Less bulky than a whole separate device too. Don't even need that if you're just playing turn based shit or something that doesn't require precise inputs. You can just use screen controls.

I'm autistic about playing retro games, but I'd rather play on original hardware, and even if i wanted a handheld that "could" play retro games, I would want to be able to play modern games too. My phone is already powerful enough to play 90% of the retro games I would want to play anyway and it could do so much more.

I own an older model one that sits in my work desk. Basically just because I can't really fit a switch or steam deck in there, but I can play an old RPG or something during my downtime at work on the little one I have. I think most of the modern ones are probably a little big for my use case, though, so I stick with one that really just plays up to GBA/PS1.

I’ve seen that because they’re directly underneath the dpad/face buttons you can’t extend your thumb properly and it’s uncomfortable after a while, and it’s easy to hit the sticks when you’re playing a primarily dpad game

I have absolutely no idea about phone controllers desu. I got a used backbone back in like 2020 for cheap and been using that. It's definitely not as precise as a full size controller, but it's good enough and I have it already.
Nothing beats screen controls for convenience and it's good enough for JRPGs, VNs and even PGA Tour 08 on PPSSPP.

The problem I had with backbone is their no different from other chink phone controllers, but the price is bloated simply because of the Xbox branding like those tablet Bluetooth controllers people use on their surface duo’s. Really low res can ruin handhelds, the 3DS was an unplayable blurry mess for anything that was 3D ( not talking about the gimmick)

I've got a 406H, I probably should've splurged on an RP5, but the 406h I got was on sale and I got it after taxes and fees for like $160.
Overall I like my chinkheld, and it's my first time using hall effect sticks, but it doesn't have the power to brute-force Nether/AetherSX2's dodgy compatibility issues so I can only play maybe half or 2/3rds of the PS2 library.

My 406H has taller sticks than the RP5 (the left one's on top though, Xbox placement) and my thumb will bump the right stick sometimes, but that's mostly because I was stupid on day 2-3 and broke the right stick's thumbpad thing, and when I glued it back on I didn't push the stick all the way in place so it's a bit taller than it's supposed to be.
