The style of this seems different from the cartoon shit like Fortnite, Valorant, or Overwatch. Marathon has detailed and realistic models with a realistic looking natural world, but the artificial stuff is neon colored.

Marathon was a good fit for the originals. The plot has similarities to how the battle played out and Lhowon is a marsh planet.

all of the above is why i stay the fuck away from extraction shooters. they are designed to be grueling, hyper competitive, anger inducing games that prey on your desire to win and progress to monopolize your time. i don't want to ascribe malice where simple lack of forethought explains how these games work, but god damn, the lines get blurry sometimes.

here's the funny thing, though: DMZ is still playable and has reasonable player counts for an unsupported game mode. i play it most weekends with some guy who plays it almost exclusively, he's got like 2.5k hours in it.

is it good? no, it's the worst of both cod and extraction shooters. middling ttk, plate and vest system, sweaty competitive fucks and hackers, and on top of that you have call of fortnite skins and weapon faggotry. the only good things DMZ does compared to other extraction shooters is a very free insurance system that can be upgraded to basically guarantee a really good, free gun and AP rounds every raid (if you're willing to grind). at that point, it's fine, but getting there is such a pain in the fucking ass that it's not worth it, especially for a game mode that could be shut down any day now.

Running a mere 10k was enough for me to understand why my ancestors invented vehicles. Marathon runners are comparable to masochistic drug addicts with the only real difference being that the former is in good shape.

It's the next evolution of "battle royale" where winning/losing actually matters because you can carry items into/out from matches, thus everything feels 10x more intense when you win big or lose big, which is meant to make people keep playing to chase that dopamine rush.

If done well, it could become the next big fad for a lot of people and fully replace normal Battle Royale games by making them seem pointless due to not having any real investments in winning or losing.

I did ask for Marathon but I was thinking something more along the lines of Halo CE's campaign not this. It's such a shame that it looks so good.

I am 99.99% sure that Marathon will have matches that average out to be like 30 minutes. I can't possibly see them trying to make matches last any longer than that in 2025/2026.

When Tarkov first started getting popular devs/publishers thought it would be the next big thing like Battle Royal and wanted to make their own.
Devs are so slow that we're only just starting to see their games even though the fad never really took off.
COD managed a quick pivot with DMZ and that shit died instantly so I wouldn't hold out much hope for Marathon.

I love this artstyle but I don't play current year multiplayer shit under any circumstances

Anytime a new PvP shooter comes out it either becomes the top 1% next mega-hit, or fades into obscurity with a small cult following. In my experience the other games pretend there's PvE by spamming a lot more NPCs to mindlessly kill while Tarkov is 90% PvP where you occasionally have to kill a bullet sponge NPC. Hunt Showdown survived for the same reason - the PvE is set dressing and no PvE player is interested in the game as a result

Problem is, it's not just a Tarkov clone, it's a Tarkov clone made by the Destiny devs, so the incompetence will be awful. A well-made clone will be good, but a poorly-made one will be forgotten. You can see this with other clones on smaller markets. Even though GTA Clones only ever reached the low double digits in existence, there's a reason Driv3r is forgotten or only remembered as awful while Sleeping Dogs is remembered quite fondly as a cult classic. It'll be the same here. Not helping matters is that Extraction Shooters are more niche, and it already has trouble competing with Tarkov, it ain't gonna go anywhere.
