D2 requires battle.net to be fully functional in multiplayer (and a unique key), so probably never. The original didn't have anything other than a basic disc check with no copy protection.

It's not a great service, and there are shills here that demand you stop playing games that GOG doesn't sell (most of them). On top of that, most people have massive Steam libraries, 22 years into its lifespan. Having to deal with other stores is a hassle.

i like gog and their mission but if gog is so consumer friendly where's the source code for the all the tooling gog uses to patch games
valve is a major contributor to wine, the primary maintainer of proton, and also ships ships stable containerized runtime(s) for native linux games so they don't get broken by ABI changes
at the end of the day, this and their other linux work is literally more important and significant for game preservation than anything gog does or will ever do
in the future, even windows is probably going to be shipping some variant of wine for win32 API compatibility, assuming it doesn't just go completely cloud+webshit only

I think they don't provide any patching tools mostly because from the get-go they've been using cracked games and patches made by the community.
Only semi-recently with the whole GOG preservation project they started to use their own DX wrapper. And even then I doubt they wrote it from scratch and most likely used another open source project like dgVoodoo.
