Why is the video game community against pre-orders? It's a weird obsession that I never really got. "Never pre-order™." But why? You usually get $5 or $10 dollars back (either instantly or as a gift card) or a collectible trinket of varying quality.

Because I pre-ordered Expedition 33, basically. So I ruined gaming and stay mad and all that shit but WHY are you mad?

Why is the video game community against pre-orders?

Burned way too many times by paying for unfinished product.
It happens that there are absolutely no standards in video game development industry, and it's full of strange people who think that they are entitled for financial success and it's customer who needs them and not the other way around. Can you imagine a restaurant owner or a car manufacturer insulting customers for being dissatisfied with quality provided for their money?

Customers having this attitude in return is completely normal and healthy, and if any other industry behaved like video games industry, customers there would have had this attitude as well. This particular industry is just still too young, I think it needs a few more decades for whoever wanting to work with it to understand their actual place in relationship with customers.

If you pre-order you have to buy the game before.
1.You see real reviews.
2.You see if it's a buggy mess that may or may not get fixed.
3.See if it's a laggy unoptimized mess that won't get fixed.

Pre-orders made more sense when everything was physical and more limited.
With the state of games these days they are mostly used to gage initial interest and/or to sucker people in before they realise the product is ass.

they're a small new indie team they probably don't even have a switch 2 devkit, apparently nintendo's been very selective about who gets them (basically only the big third party publishers and the biggest indies like deltarune/hollow knight)

I wouldn't pre-order mostly because most games launch broken on PC. I'd wait a few days to see if there are any problems that are know within the first few days before I ever purchase anything. I really don't like to be a beta for a game that should be finished on launch.
