Most threads are about the girls and shipping arguments. In all the years since its release nobody has ever come up with a valid criticism of it. The combat is also fire especially if you like particle effects.

Remake is the Ocarina of Time moment for Final Fantasy. Criticizing it now is the equivalent of critiquing OoT now.

Remake is pretty linear and the new story stuff is lame, but is carried by the visuals and the combat system. Rebirth is much better but to its detriment is filled with bad content that didn't even need to be in the game in the first place.

I'm not very interested in these remakes at all. They just appear to be super bloated to me. If I wanted to replay the original, I could and have just replayed the original. But if they wanted to make a legitimate spinoff or sequel, then why the fuck did they not just do that? That being said, if you havent played it: its a great game with some obvious flaws. the strenghts are definitely its gameplay, great cutscenes and fleshed out characters (if you dont mind anime mannerisms, you'll love them). the weak points are mainly side content and the obvious padding in places.

They already have the assets made and the gameplay locked down so we can expect part 2 in late 2021, or early 2022 at the VERY latest. And part 3 will be even faster so probably 2023.

I've been critical of both Remake and Rebirth. I've praised them where I felt it was due and explained why, just as I've criticized where I felt was necessary but explained why. What's more I think it's good practice to use examples from other games when discussing where the Remake series fucked up to show a practical application of things you want to see rather than some vague hypothetical.

That's the problem there are certain parts of 7R that I do genuinely like. Just as there are parts of 7R that I fucking hate. And it's important to discuss why a game is good or bad rather than just saying "it's shit" or "it's GOTY." It's not like Sonic 06 where the game is so fundamentally broken that any good decision is outweighed by 4 or 5 bad ones.

I think what's frustrating about it is they're so hyper vigilant to stay ahead of TORtanicfags that they end up defending shit that makes no sense.

One of the criticisms with Remake is the padding. We spend too much time doing nonsensical bullshit and spinning our wheels because we have to extend a 5 hour segment of game into 40. A good example being the Sector 7 Plate section. The party learns from Corneo that Shinra is planning on dropping the Sector 7 plate onto the slums to get rid of Avalanche once and for all. This is a genuinely horrifying turn of events that requires everyone to get to Sector 7 as soon as possible. In OG the run to Sector 7 takes like 20 minutes. The sewers are around 3 screens and the Train Graveyard is like 2 screens. But Remake needs to fill time. So we get sections where Tifa and Aerith are endearing to one another. And another section where we solve a ghost mystery. And it takes so long that I genuinely forgot that "oh shit everyone is going to die in a few minutes." You can see Sector 7 on fire in the distance at one but you're still dealing with fucking ghosts. Because 7R needs to pad this shit out, the urgency of why you're going to Sector 7 in the first place ends up getting diluted until it picks up again after you arrive. And just... why? The ghost mystery isn't even important, it doesn't come up again because the ghosts are wholly different from the Time Jannies.

You don't have to consider this a deal breaker for why you might enjoy Remake and for the record I don't. But you gotta understand how someone could or how it's representative of how the padding drags this game down. And honestly, this one thing is something I would consider minor in the grand scheme of things. There's way more glaring issues. I just bring it up because criticism of the Remake series isn't just some shitty fox and grapes situation. People who were looking forward to this games can have legitimate problems with it

It's less present in Remake but mostly in Rebirth, the inter party relationships are way better. In OG Barret talks to Cloud. Yuffie talks to Cloud. Yuffie and Barret rarely speak to each other. In Rebirth there's way more opportunities for cast members to speak to each other. Barret gets to be a grumpy big brother to Yuffie. Aerith gets to talk about time shit to Nanaki. Barret throws more and more potshots at Cait Sith. Tifa expresses her anxieties to Aerith. Barret encourages Tifa to use her anxiety to fuel her hatred towards Shinra. All of this is good and does more to show the party as a family. It's not just Cloud and his hanger ons.

The shit about the Junon Republic was genuinely nice to learn about. I was always curious of how Shinra took over the world, especially since it seemingly happened so unbelievably fast. And it turns out they did it by usurping another regime that was there before. And that's cool. Why does most of the world look like shit? Because Shinra didn't maintain the infrastructure between areas they didn't care about. And they absorb so many resources that the people who live there can barely survive much less maintain the roads. That's absolutely in line with how we see Shinra operate and it's also something criticized by Rufus who's more level headed and pragmatic than his psycho father. I think Rufus in general is good in the Remake series.

There's good to be found and I'm willing to give 7R it's flowers when I feel it deserves it.

Remake can easily remove 4 chapters. In fact, there was nothing wrong if the game was just 20 hours long. Its them wanting to sell 3 60 hours games. Luckily, I can see them tired of this shit and just make the next remake less ambitious, if leakers words about FF9R are to be trusted.

I agree with all this, especially the character interactions. It's a common problem in japanese games and anime that the world revolves around the MC and nobody says anything to anyone else. 7R fixes this really well.

RE5 absolutely does not need a remake. I'm actually in the camp that RE4 didn't need a remake even if I overall enjoyed the game. At this point Capcom is doing it because everyone expects it and they'll make money from it.

Regarding pt3 I think it'll be less ambitious in the sense that they don't need to create much of the over world the way they did for Rebirth. They just need to fill in a few blanks and adjust reused assets for a wartime setting.

This was an argument I made when Remake was new. I never played 16. From what I understand, that game fell on its ass. But from the outside looking in, I had a begrudging respect for FF16. Because it had to succeed or fail entirely on its own terms. It didn't use a 25 year old legendary game as a shield. The thing about the Raccoon City survivors is that they were regular people who had to survive extraordinary circumstances. You know... like survival horror. But because Capcom refuses to pass the torch to new characters, the Raccoon City Survivors are closer to Avengers. FF9 is already coming, will interesting to see what the approach they took on that one. We will likely see more of a combination of new games and reignite old titles. Might look towards a 6 remake or X-3 or expansions like this, along with games like FF17.

I always enjoyed Remake
Initially I was primed to hate it for not being a 1:1 remake but then the shitposting about the time jannie ghosts made it seem interesting enough to check out and from there I got hooked because it was fun to play
Still haven't played Rebirth and if I do, it would be on Switch 2 because the PC spec requirements are artificially high

Romancing saga 2 remake was great, though I could understand them wanting a BIG remake for 6 I can't see them having that energy anymore. FF fans are also too old now and zoomers won't care much for old stories and not dating. Though RS2R graphics and style fits 6 semi anime style. They also owe 5 a remake.
With 10 they can just update it like crisis core, about x-3 kek, anything can happen after that 2.5
I trust 9R being just a smaller remake and turn based, most problems that game had was the slow combat and the dizzy cameras in every fucking fight.

Yes they're still making new games. But that doesn't change how all the remakes have also been made in place of actually new games.
There would have been even more new games had they not done the remakes.

Switch 2 would not have been the right place. Hardware presentation overshadows the games, plus Nintendo logically wanted to shine a light on exclusives which this won't be.
Sony has consistently done State of Plays during May for the past years and there's SGF in June, those are possibilities.
But it's entirely possible Square decides to do its own event during the actual anniversary in July, in the same way they did for the Rebirth announcement.

Having not played it, I'm stuck between thinking it looks fun, and thinking they made all of the wrong decisions in terms of adapting the tone and story of FF7.
It really feels like the saturday morning cartoonised version of the original.
