For Smash I want a successor to Melee, meaning the end of floaty physics and a return to Quake III speeds of muh fast.

Air Ride as a game would be better if the race mode itself was actually good. Everyone always talks about City Trial since the game has much better destruction derby mechanics and occasionally Top Ride but the main racing mode was underwhelming.

Melee gave us Side Specials, Air/Spot Dodges, Up/Down Throws, Pummeling maybe more stuff I’m forgetting.

Brawl gave us Final Smashes, Infinite Air Dodging, Moving while using certain items and lol Tripping.

Smash 4 gave us…. 8 Players? They make a big deal about it in that 50 fact extravaganza so that’s what came to mind. And custom moves.

Ultimate gave us a few more things such as Parries which don’t feel very rewarding imo, Final Smash meter as well as Shield Specials and Back Specials via Inkling and Terry.

They’re gonna have to think hard for the next big mechanic to sell the next game on aside from just new characters.

City trial, which was the last game mode in the list, was legitimately the grand father of the Battle Royale genre, and could easily carry the game into hundreds of hours of replayability. Anyone who knows the game is good is specifically talking about City Trial.

Magma Flows, Frozen Hillside and Beanstalk Park are pretty grind heavy and you can't fly over those sections making gliding useless compared to Celestial Valley.

It's not a hub per se. Game has three modes. Air Ride is just the basic bitch racing mode and TopRide plays like one of those shitty top down racing games like micro machines. City Trial is the "hub" you speak of and consists of a several minute lobby of sorts where your Kurbies compete in the titular city for Stars (vehicles) and stat altering powerups and occasional random events until time is up and you're taken to the actual competition stage. There's a free version of this mode where every star in the game shows up in the central area so you can just fuck around.

Why does everyone keep saying the Rex was bad? I loved it as a kid. Yes I admit mostly because it was just a big as hell vehicle, but from what I recall it had one of the highest HP, weight and offense stats. (Making it great in any combat event) and it also had good top speed (Making it pretty good in drag races and in stuff like Nebula.

I think its turning was really bad, which would make it pretty bad in races, but in City Trial you could correct that with just a few turning/charge power ups, which wasn't too hard to get. The only real flaw it had that I could recall was bad flying which you could pretty much never fix, but those events were pretty rare.

If you're just talking vanilla races with no city trial power ups then yeah I could see it being bad. Worse if you didn't enable HP (Which I think most people didn't). In City Trial though I think it was an at least decent ending vehicle for like 75% of events if I would guess, although you would probably be better off gathering power ups in another star first. (But that's every vehicle compared to Swerve star)

I always loved destroying all of the other vehicles on the map with this one so nobody could get a good vehicle.

The problem with Rex Wheelie is that it has garbage handling and acceleration. Even in regular Air Ride, the majority of vehicles will overtake it just by going airborne and a lot of the tracks have a bunch of turns without rails to correct you.

It basically becomes a pretty good jack of all trades (Outside of flying games where it'll eat shit)

I don't know if RNG chance of events is datamined, but I'm pretty sure that Destruction derby and drag race are two of the most common events by default. The wiki says the Rex has the highest defense stat and the 3rd highest top speed ignoring legendaries, so it is definitely one of the best drag racers.
In Vs. Dedede it's super helpful just because it's so tanky. If your goal is to not lose and deal damage then I can't see how you could possibly call it bad. From a cooperative angle (Which the event is) it's definitely good. If you're just saying which vehicles do the most DPS then I guess not, but the event doesn't check for that so that feels like a strange metric.

Yes these ones suck, not gonna argue against that. That said I think they are less common than things like destruction derby or melee, but probably the most common afterwards.
Races I feel like depend a lot on the map. In the simple maps I think the Rex is at least decent (Ex. Nebula). On more complex maps it's not that good, but being able to upgrade turning/charge can help mitigate its downsides, making it so winning isn't a total impossibility. That said I'm pretty sure races are one of the rarest events so it doesn't come up too often.

I think with these numbers I can maybe say that Rex is probably good in 40% of the events (Drag/destruction Derby/Dedede and the simple race courses). The other 40% being flying events and more complicated races is pretty bad though.

I guess the reality is that it's more of a coin flip than anything. If you pick Rex and get one of the good stadium events you'll probably beat anyone who went with a more well rounded vehicle (Ex. Shadow Star) but if you get a flying event you instantly lose.

I guess if there's anything this has made me realize it's that I hope in Kirby Air Riders they make it so you always learn what stadium event you'll get, then that would probably make the more niche vehicles better as situational picks.

The worst thing about this event was that it actually punished you for having too good of a flying stat

The problem is Rex is only good for one thing when there's a lot of stars which can be a sfe bet in case you get screwed Like how Swerve star can glide in case you get Target Flight, Shadow Star can do huge damage despite flimsy base health etc). As soon as air is involved Rex is screwed.

That's not true though, I would argue that Rex is good for at least two things. It's good at PvP and it's good at top speed. That genuinely makes it a lot better than the other vehicles that are only good at one thing or sometimes nothing at all.

The only real argument I could see is that something better rounded like the Shadow Star could beat the Rex even in its best games if given enough power ups in City Trial, while the Rex will probably never beat the Shadow Star in flying events outside of extremely unlikely scenarios like a 20-0 flight upgrade difference.
But if you judge the vehicles from an "Equal power up baseline". Like you just assume every competing vehicle in the stadium event has 5 in every power up or 10, then I think the Rex is still legitimately good with a better winrate than at least half of the vehicles.

It's a game that's based on mechanical differences being in the karts and having the ability to have each player use different items/copyabilities.
Having a bunch of different characters throws a bit of a wrench in that.
