Speaking of games that are clones/spiritual successors to classic horror franchises, you know what game never seems to get any imitation? Siren. Resident Evil all the time, Fatal Frame has DreadOut, a few have Silent Hill's tank-melee and themes, but never Siren.

That's because Siren is a fucking disaster of a video game. I see people talk about it like it was indeed one of the horror classics but I challenge you to play that catastrophe of technology. The controls do not work, especially the camera, the melee combat barely connects and it's awful to aim with guns, the FMV-faced cutscenes are the silliest shit ever, the story is all over the place, and its main mechanic (the monster-sight) brings the game to a silky 10fps on original hardware. You'll spend most of your time looking in a completely different direction from where you want to, experiencing heavy slowdowns, and dying seemingly at random. The sequel fixes none of this and the western remake somehow makes it worse.

I think in a lot of cases it's just kind of a bonus over a more vanilla action game premise. you can still have fun action but with horror you'll also naturally have stronger atmosphere, higher intensity set pieces and more freedom with pacing.
