So I started this yesterday and I’m almost done with Bianca Hills and I kinda love it so far. Am I crazy? Starting Rico Harbor now…
So I started this yesterday and I’m almost done with Bianca Hills and I kinda love it so far. Am I crazy...
The only people who don't like it are retards who got filtered by the movement
Sunshine is good, it was simply hated for not being 128
Similar to Windwaker being hated for not being oot2.
fpbp
they specifically got filtered by pachinko
Its good the first time through but when you start to go for 100% then it turns into absolute dog shit.
It's not a bad game as a whole, but it has some dogshit sections.
the fucking game sucks dude, if the stars were spaced out like mario 64 and gave you the same amount of opportunities to collect stars, then i would actually LIKE mario sunshine a lot more. But no it usually rail guards you to get 1 star at a time and if you WANT to beat the game you're going to have to atleast get the 7th star in each level, on top of that the movement fucking glitches half the time, id consider its amount of fuckery to be even WORSE than mario 64's because atleast in that game i can just change my route and go get a different star rather than having to climb all the way back up just because sunshine just hates me.
No you aren't crazy. You just have different taste and opinons.
Odyssey has sort of made it irrelevant desu
t. filtered gayboy
How? they both have extremely different clear conditions
shines are pointless because you have to beat shadow mario on every stage no matter what
sloppy boat controls
endless gimmicks
complete removal of precision platforming
blue coins to fill the gap left by the game not being finished
It's the worst mario game by a large margin, fails on even basic game design principles
It's fun. It has some pretty bad shines and the rigid progression structure overall hurts the game, but I still have a good time with it and would love to see another mainline game have some place from Isle Delfino even as just one level or a side area.
Best level is Sirena Beach btw.
It's without a doubt the best 3d platformer ever. Not kidding. Don't respond to me.
You're not crazy. Its the best 3D Mario ever created with actual difficult platforming. Only fags who want casual games like Odyssey disagree.
>endless gimmicks
nah these are good, although i wish the game let you toggle between hover, jet and the fast one like a hat in time.
complete removal of precision platforming
i liked the stages without fludd, were fun
Stupid fuicking
Odyssey is a more fluid and fun experience without kicking you out of the stage every time you get a moon. It’s also way more comfy than Sunshine could ever be just because its presentation is miles better.
Have fun with the best 3D Mario anon
pachinko
sand bird
watermelons
poison river
on-rails shooter
fruit fetch quests
BLUE COINS
the only "decent" gimmick is the casino boss, everything else is tedious at best
Odyssey could never beat this type of look, i cant stand odyssey its just way too meaningless
i thought you were refurring to fludd, yeah you got it these Suck
All I'm seeing in this post is "filtered"
your reward for spraying down every surface of every episode of every level for 100% completion is a motherfucking jpeg
defend this
Should’ve been unlockable weegee with a fucking Poltergust 3000
It's the best Mario game.
Did anyone else try and clean every inch of every level as a kid?
galaxy 1 is best game. 2 is absolute ass except for a few levels
It would almost be fine if they at least told you how many blue coins are mission specific.
Sunshine was build for pressure sensitive triggers so I expect suddenly retards who finally get to play it with a real gamecube controller fascimile will come out of the woodwork calling it a masterpiece now that you can run and spray as intended.
wrong, Galaxy 1 walked so galaxy 2 Can RUN
Game is comfy until you actually have to do platforming.
only the very last few levels of 2 are fun the rest is like a long ass tutorial and its shit. yoshis are underused as well.
Soul
It’s also way more comfy than Sunshine could ever be just because its presentation is miles better
Regardless of anything else, no. Just no. Sunshine's atmosphere shits all over Odyssey's. Nothing is comfy about Odyssey because you never feel like you stick around in one area long enough to get accustomed to it and each world has wildly different aesthetics to the point of barely having cohesion. Some Odyssey levels feel like the levels you'd find in any cheap 3D platformer Mario knock-off.
theres a boss rush romhack of galaxy 2 thats really fun youtu.be
people don't like sunshine because of the over 10 minutes of cutscenes and handholding tutorials with shitty voice acting (compared to the 1min of mario 64) and because the game was blatantly unfinished so most of the objectives are shitty "spray water on this physics object till the game behaves and gives you the right result" or blue coin filler so that you can't properly enjoy the fun movement unless you're a speedrunner or playing the handful of acapella stages
Only i know the real reason why sunshine is really bad and deserves to be hated
unironically shitty filler objectives like this or the korok seeds in BOTW just exist for the kids who get literally 1 game every 4-6 months so they can really squeeze out value from it while being easy for the developers to make, if they put a cool reward behind it then everyone would want to play the shitty filler missions and if they weren't shitty filler missions they wouldn't exist at all because the entire point was to be something quick to make to give the game something extra
TLDR: stop being an OCD 100% completion retard and just stop playing a game if you find it boring to keep playing it. hope this helps
The game has an insanely high movement skill ceiling but literally never demands you to actually use it. The only thing you gain from mastering the movement is beating levels faster.
no one would wear overall in a tropic setting, not even merry-oh
game looks and sounds kino awesomesauce but its so shit unfortunarely
Super Mario 64 does open exploration better
Galaxy does level gimmicks and design better
What does Sunshine do intentionally? (If you say movement you're retarded)
This
Same with Wind Waker
Anon you have to actually explain why hovering makes the game so good that its the best 3D mario. You can't just say hovering like its inherently positive.
Super Mario 64 does open exploration better
Galaxy does level gimmicks and design better
Disagree on both counts. Super Mario 64 had some good novelty at the time I'm sure but the levels are very small and convoluted overall. Galaxy had some better variety as far as environments go but I was never a huge fan of the floatiness with the gravity mechanics.
Mario 64 is the best game ever when you're doing your 5th playthrough
thank god this is censored, otherwise my boss would have fired me just now
Sunshine doesn't have FLUDD, retard
I can acknowledge that there's some shitty level design in this course, but the soul makes up for it in my eyes.
youtu.be
What causes this behavior?
?
I guess what I mean by exploration is open endedness. Its more of a sandbox or whatever than sunshine. Although I can't really say Sunshine's levels were fun to explore for me either even ignoring the linear nature of the game. I will say at least sunshine is linear with purpose though. There's progression in the levels in a way you couldn't really do if it were open ended but ultimately I don't think they ever did anything super interesting with that idea.
Have any of you played Eclipse? It's pretty cool if you're looking to replay Sunshine with way more stuff + new moves
Weird that this thread pops up, I just beat this game about 2 days ago after never finishing it as a kid. I absolutely loved it, my only complaint is the game is far too short and the turbo nozzle is rarely used.
Mario Sunshine is GOATED for a casual playthrough. The consternation only begins when going for 100%, especially if you're trying to do it without a guide.
Odyssey may have slightly better gameplay, but Sunshine's comfy vibes and feeling of an interconnected world haven't been topped.
Am I crazy?
yes
it's fucking garbage and if it didn't have the nintendo logo it would have gotten the 4/10 rating it deserves
Pros
best Mario world building
comfy atmosphere
decent boss fights
shitty voice acting is charming
peak water
Cons
the most blatantly unfinished Mario game
FLUDD nozzles are strangely underutilized because they have you use Bloopers and barely have anything involving rocket
blue coin garbage
first 7 shines of every level are mandatory
significantly less worlds than 64 while also repeating objectives
excessively linear for a 3D Mario
one of the worst Bowser battles in Mario history
100% is not worth it
That's mostly what I was shocked by as a kid. I poured so much time into 64 and Sunshine flew by. There is side content to do but its aids. I wouldn't mind the game length though if it felt like they did a lot in that time but the game FEELS short, whether its actually short or not. I didn't feel like I really went through much.
Game was shit, huge and empty.
I don't mean to sound like a shill but adds 120 shines if you're looking for more. Its pretty high quality.
have to play the entire base game to unlock the new shit
The turbo nozzle felt like it was only done to gatekeep the delfino plaza star, that level next to the lighthouse, and blue coins
Rule of 3 I guess
Yea but you play through the base game with new moves so it at least makes it somewhat different. But yea that's why I suggest it for a replay, not just if you want to jump straight to new content. Luckily Sunshine is short. Its basically an expansion rather than a romhack.
NOOO YOU AREN'T ALLOWED TO LIKE IT BECAUSE UHH....... THE LEVELS CHANGE FOR EACH STAR OR SOMETHING!
Meanwhile what zoomers claim is peak
Waggling
Pointing at screen
Shooting starbits for 20 seconds
Manta surf with waggle
Flying eagle with waggle
Pushing bubbles
Destroying trash
Doing the entire game again as luigi
Green stars that boot you out of the level
Rng stars
Lmao
Sunshine is magically good because Galaxy is shit for different reasons
>excessively linear for a 3D Mario
Repeating objectives
Why is this good when Galaxy does it?
Why is this good when Galaxy does it?
It's not.
Thats just the gimmicks mind you and I forgot the standing on a ball dogshit and others.
Galaxy also is the only 3d mario game with literally no acrobatic feel to it
Mario moves slow as shit
Side jump and long jump are nearly useless
Waggle is slower than hover nozzle and needs to be used x25 times as often
Mario literally has no momentum in his movement aside of planetoids
Miss me with this gay shit
It's great until you realize that you can only get the final 24 Shines by collecting 240 fucking blue coins because Nintendo rushed the game out the door and couldn't even be bothered to make 120 actual Shines (something Mario 64 did on previous generation hardware btw)
you can only get the last optional 24 shines by combing and exploring the whole game
Yeah I bet having to beat the entire game to get the green stars is better
BUT GALAXY
literally nobody mentioned galaxy
To get the last star in galaxy you must 100% the entire game twice
all those are kino though
NOOOO DONT COMPARE GAMES FROM LITERALLY THE SAME SERIES
Sunshine is to blame for giving us Petey Piranha, who Nintendo felt the need to shove into every spinoff title for the next 15 years, so it's automatically a bottom tier game
in that case, sunshine is dogshit just like galaxy and both are inferior to 64
you may now proceed to piss yourself in rage
Sunshine is to blame for giving us Petey Piranha, who Nintendo felt the need to shove into every spinoff title for the next 15 years
Meanwhile SMB3 gave us the Koopalings and World gave us Yoshi.
It's okay when Galaxy does it because Galaxy is fun.
NOOOOO T-THAT'S NOT FAIR
I don't care. Cope and seethe
Petey
Starlow
Rosalina
Name a more shilled character than these 3
It really felt like the GC era Nintendo was trying to establish more coherent worlds for all of their shit and yea it just led to annoying repetition in a lot of cases. Wind Waker had a similar effect for a bit
Meanwhile SMB3 gave us the Koopalings and World gave us Yoshi.
Yes. These are good things.
because galaxy's levels are MEANT to be linear but sunshine's levels have sm64-tier openness to its levels yet it locks you into doing one SPECIFIC starsprite at a time. Thats why galaxy gets a pass
Sunshine is to blame for giving us Petey Piranha
implying anything is worse than this
Yes, they are inferior to 64
DK 94 >>> 64 > sunshine > odyssey > 3dworld > dogshit > Galaxy 2 > 3dland > galaxy 1
You arent gonna be talking shit about Yoshi's Island you hear me little faggot?
sm64 and 3d world and galaxy 2 boss rush rom hack are the only good 3d mario games
forgot to mention I'm gay, don't know if that matters
Nintendo felt the need to shove him into every spinoff title for the next 15 years, therefore Yoshi's Island is bad
have to 100% the base game + sunburn expansion, including fucking blue coins, for the post-game
fucking D R O P P E D
Yeah
Super mario bros introduced bowser and nintendo felt the need to shove him every single game goddamn
I didn't read the thread but is there anyway to get straight into the game and skip the incredibly long and boring intro? Just dump me into Delfino Plaza. No story shit please.
Sunshine gave us bowser Jr. And dopey ass Piantas
Get fucked
The intro is like 5 minutes at the absolute most, anon.
If you're using an emulator I'm sure there's some code out there that skips cutscenes.
Otherwise, no.
is there anyway to get straight into the game and skip the incredibly long and boring intro?
Only if you're playing on an emulator and enable a skip code
get this instead github.com
It's 8 minutes.
the instructions are a little much, i would upload my rom but its a little over the litterbox limit...
Oh yeah. That's even worse. Thanks for reminding me. It's crazy how hard Nintendo tried to push Isle Delfino and the Piantas for a while, and Bowser Jr. will forever just be "Koopalings, but worse"
Cool. Thanks, fren.
It's just a fucking intro. How many times are you starting a new game?
Good take - completely agree.
I'd argue the first 3-4 levels are really really good but the last couple suck.
What if I don't have a memory card?
Never turn of your gamecube
Then get a memory card? You expect us to believe that you're just restarting the game every time you turn on your console? The whole LARP is stupid since you're obviously an emulator-fag anyway
Galaxy at the bottom
Bold, haven't played them all but that's a skeptical list specially with everyone shitting on sunshine, how is it so good to you?
NTA but Galaxy belongs at the bottom because it gimped Mario's movement options/mechanics too hard and doesn't have the level design of Galaxy 2
people who say this game is bad are retarded and gay
You can do this in an actual good game (mario 64)
trans btw
If thinking that Mario 64 is a good game makes you trans, then I'm officially a they/them
Water sliding (cool)
Hover (boring)
basic dive
basic wall jumping
hover again
YAWN
Millennials are obsessed with these slopass games. Odyssey BTFOs Sunshine, Galaxy, and 64
Am I crazy?
Why would you be?
Super Mario Sunshine is great. Just don't try to 100% it, because the blue coins are pretty bad imo, unless you're following a guide or something. Other than that Sunshine is very solid even though it's full of liquid hur hur hur
I don't understand how anybody got filtered by the movement though, that's like the least of this game's problems, I love this game but not as much as 64 or galaxy the only issue is having to beat all the shadow mario missions to beat the game instead of being able to collect whatever shine I want like the other 3d mario games
But no it usually rail guards you to get 1 star at a time
mario 64 does this too moron
if you fall off of the first star of bomb omb battle field, you have like 3 opportunities to get other stars, try falling off in noki bay in sms, you’re fucked and you gotta cljmb all the way back up
start Mario 64
get to Bob-omb Battlefield
able to get the star from King Bob-omb, the one behind the Chain Chomp gate, 8 red coins, and the box on the sky island even without cannons
Now tell me how many you can get when you start Bianco Hills
Yoshi’s Island gave us bowser jr fagg
that was baby bowser
Bianca Hills is the best area so it makes sense
The design is the same tho
Wait there's people that unironically don't like Sunshine? What are the fuckin Zoomies?
Does it run on GameCube?
Bianca Hills>Noki Bay>Pianta Village>Ricco Harbor>Gelato Beach>Sirena Beach>Pinna Park
Yea it does actually though you'd need to buy one of those SD card memory card things. It doesn't run well though on GC, I would obviously pick emulator over real hardware for really any rom hack/mod of this scale. I've had gamecube controller to PC adapters for like 15 years, its nothing hard or new to get that working.

only one I agree with
If you're gonna do real hardware just play on Wii with nintendont
nah m8 it's 64=Banjo-Kazooie>Odyssey>Sunshine>Yooka-Layle>DK64>Tooie
Based though where does Galaxy land?
I played Banjo for the first time a few years ago and it really felt at many different moments they were explicitly doing something Mario 64 did, but in a more interesting and complex way or mixing things up in a divisive way. It feels kinda like a direct evolution in a lot of ways though I know it plays and controls completely differently. Obviously SM64 is just extremely influential in general but it really felt more like homages rather than just being inescapably influenced. It almost felt like they knew you'd have certain expectations from playing sm64 and then played with those expectations at points.
with DK64
Where does BANANZA go?
same place as odyssey
Cool, I have been considering it. Are you using a gamecube, emulation with the proper gamepad or a different one?
No I just played 64 first and Sunshine was boring to me
No longjump? No buy
it litterally never even occurred to me that being unable to get shines from other missions was something people would care about until I saw people whining about it online as an adult. I don't think having a stricter order of shines vs stars in 64 undermines the experience at all
Also the overall progression through the game might be "more linear" (in quotes because 64 really isn't that much less linear), but the actual stage design is far less so. Basically every stage in 64 is either overtly linear (tiktok clock, rainbow ride, etc) or basically has fuckall to do outside of a predesigned linear path (Bomb-omb battlefield).
Sunshine is far better about having meaninful platforming and stuff spread across it's stages or not having a clear single linear path through them: Bianco has a winding path up a spiraling structure like bom-omb, but there's a whole village, a park with trees, etc outside the winding path with meaningful platforming. Riccio, Pinna park, Gelato, and Pinata village are true sandboxes without a clear path, etc
sloppy boat controls
I can't tell if you're shitting on the Corona Mountain boat controls, in which case fair, but it's litterally one sequence of one stage; or Mario's controls in general, in which case fuck off, no, Sunshine is just the only Mario game where he is truly responsive and tight to control instead of having a ton of extra unresponsive weight and inertia to him
Most of what I've seen from eclipse is just making it more like 64 where it makes the game "less linear" which I don't care about. What new moves does it add?
Does it expand the Airstrip into a full aiport stage or Corona mountan into a full volcano one with multiple shines and more to do a la Bianco, Ricco, etc? That's the main thing I would want from a hack of Sunshine, an Airport and a Volcano are the two sterotypical tropical vacation locations it didn't already have full levels for.
or you can simply not bother to 100% the game since that's not required for completion?
Other then the cutscene skips why would I want to use this when dolphin already allows you to run the game at 60fps? Hell didn't it run at 60 on gamecube to begin with?
64 doesn't have a god tier comfy aeshetic and setting or levels that actually take advantage of being open sandboxes, and most of all feels like shit to control, unlike sunshine
The long jump is a move for trannies
or you can simply not bother to 100% the game since that's not required for completion?
100% a game should be a one time thing
They made the right move changing the graphics to cel shaded for Windwaker
I am crazy for liking this widely liked piece of media
Ultimately I think if Sunshine had more variety in environments most of people's other complaints would melt away. I used to rant about stuff like linear shines or w/e but honestly that doesn't even bother me at the end of the day. The actual issue with sunshine for me is its fucking boring and I feel like every stage feels roughly similar despite having wildly different designs. The newly found coherence is not only completely bizarre for Mario, both 2D and 3D, but also not handled in an exciting way. The world feels more fleshed out sure, but for me anyways its also very dull to explore. Because of this issue, I start nitpicking about design choices that ultimately I could actually see myself enjoying if the game felt fun to go through.
Peach's castle is comfier than anything in Sunshine. Sunshine just reminds me of hot days and sunburns.
Not even true. You can go to 5 out of the 11 new worlds immediately after the intro.
Mario 64 feels great to control, you’re just really stupid and You can’t appreciate a movement system with actual depth and a learning curve unlike urstupid baby mario odyssey and sunshine
WW literally set the near-death of the series in motion
Best hub in the series by far.
you're not actually supposed to engage with the game you fucking chud, GOD
"Bianca" Hills
"Rico" Harbor
Holy fuck my autism.
Speaking of King Boo boss, he's such a stupid boss. Why does he spawn those stupid off brand Cheep Cheep fish when you get an enemy jackpot? They do fuck all but flop on their backs.
It’s Bianco actually
Odyssey works because it actually encourages the player to platform with Cappy to get to unreachable places whislt also making the game your bitch, imbecile. In Sunshine, you have a limit on using FLUDD, and the devs didn't intend for the players to cheese the game.
I know, that's why I put both Bianca and Rico in quotes.
The theme park has the best music in the game
Mario Sunshine 2 or remake when?
Each stage has at least one level that just sucks ass, like the watahmeloni one or the secret in the bay
What did Nintendo mean by this?
Boobs
The blue coins single-handedly ruin this game for me, they're one of the worst collectibles ever conceived, like random drops from an RPG-level retarded. I did 100 percent in Odyessy and can't stand trying in Sunshine, randomly spraying walls is so boring. I'd rather play that beaver minigame in DK64.
Nah.
Fuck
This was me when I was a kid. Didn't have a memory card for the first couple of weeks, so I saw that intro so many god damn times.
Watch 8 minutes of cutcenes
Fight the shitty boss on the airstrip and then again in Delfino Plaza
Finally you can play the game
...and fight the shitty boss again on stage 1 of Bianca Hills
Repeat this once or twice a day for two weeks
Sometimes I get the desire to replay the game, then I remember all that and it just completely kills it.
Odyssey caused for me to lose my faith in EPD overnight. Fuck Cappy, fuck maneuvers exclusively gated by motion controls and fuck this wretched pile of mediocre kitsch with a rusty rake sideways. Sunshine for life.
