I'm... not sure what to think of CotW anymore. I still think it will turn out fine but I'm not going to pretend the retarded guest characters did not sour the deal. Holy FUCK they are so dumb, and they make it clear that at any point in time they will add another, similarly idiotic character instead of a classic one, or just a new actual character.

It's been known for quite some time that ASW is working on another game. Whether or not it's a fighting game we don't know. But we all assume it's a fighting game. It could be another third party arena game or some other shit.

NTA but out of curiosity I had a look and there was actually someone I could have played against.
Also god-damn SF4 loads fast. This took maybe half a minute from booting it to being in the multiplayer menu. SF6 I'd still not even be in the main menu screen.

I very much doubt they'd use another in house IP fighting game when they've got Strive. It'll be another third party anime game like DBFZ or granblue.

Most recent fightan I played was MotW about a week ago. Otherwise it's just working through my backlog until Fatal Fury comes out.

I played enough of the beta that I have no worries about the gameplay or online functionality, so I'm just hoping that the game has a healthy playerbase.
I know there were a lot of people talking about how they dropped the game due to the two guest characters, but I'm just chalking that up to a vocal minority.

No, they're good (apart from 5P) and they have low recovery for such big pokes. If you want to see abysmal dogshit, go look at Dizzy's buttons, they're probably some of the worst in the game currently
2S is great (disjointed and beats 6P), 6K sets up for a strike/throw 50/50, 2D low profiles, cS/2H/2D are very easy to hit confirm, 5K has mad active frames and can be made plus, 6H is a great combo tool and he can even combo his 5D meterlessly
The only weird one is 5H, which is more of a counterpoke that you have to space perfectly, which feels very lacking

You can convert into QV at far ranges (eg. fS, 2S), or Carcass Raid at close range, so you need some awareness
You can also try to convert into Stinger Aim but that's situational
Furthest range for fS doesn't convert on normal hit, but it's stupid big and I think it should be like that across the cast (Eg Testament also can't convert, Ram somehow gets a pass because the devs are retarded waifufags)
On fS counterhit you can get a ball for free (at -1), or convert with Wild Assault

Even though Capcom seems to be working under a system of 1 fighting game at a time, SF6 has clearly given them enough confidence to consistently rerelease their old fighting games and allow cross promotion with SNK. Now, would their next fighting game be Darkstalkers specifically? ....eh. I think they'd sooner bring back the VS series in some shape, or just do SF7. But, Capcom is bringing back Okami, so... never say never?

4 years into strive and i'm still terrible. Can't fuzzy defend properly, bad spacing and neutral, not understanding the flow of the game, not being able to spot enemy patterns, not being able to see my own. Still struggle to get into celestial, all this with 4K hours.

IIRC it's only Millia and Bridget who get 2 hit close slashes other than Venom and they're way more consistent when it comes to converting of either hit. Millia's second hit pop up technically can affect routing but very rarely and her getting the biggest c.S activation makes it null anyways.

I was waiting for an interesting character for SF6. There is Mai now but I'm not buying a game twice just to look at jiggle physics, I can do it for free in DO6.

All games that don't at least have 1k steam players at all times is a discord fighter according to the internet.

Usually when ArcSys says anything about low damage in Strive the game ends up having a load of damage regardless, but they actually commit to it with Venom. Also Asuka, to a lesser degree. I think Asuka matches are some of the more interesting in the game just by virtue of him doing fairly low damage and also having a lot of health so matches with him just go on longer and the game has more time to breathe than it often does.

Venom doesn't play like Billy either. Venom's gimmick isn't being a pole user, it's being a pool player, if anybody's the pole character it's Sin.

CotW doesn't have the best reputation right now either, and for all the dooming about Tekken, I'm sure it'll recover. I don't say that because I think the game at its core is just so solid and the team seems so competent that it has to recover, I just think it'll recover because it's Tekken. It and Street Fighter are so dominant in their top two position it's hard to imagine them doing anything so catastrophic they can't recover from it. The name alone does a lot of heavy lifting.

1. Darth Vader, Yoda and Starkiller are fictional characters; Salvatore and Ronaldo aren't.
2. Darth Vader and Yoda appeared in other video games before; Salvatore didn't and Ronaldo was only in FIFA.
3. Lightsabers still somewhat fit the theme of the game because they are swords of sorts (even though they should cut right through the weapons of most of the cast if the game obeyed SW universe rules); neither Salvatore nor Ronaldo have any hand-to-hand combat experience (and football is literally a game where you recoil and cry out after hitting someone in hopes of fooling the arbiter).
4. The SW characters aren't even the worst guests in SC4, that "honor" goes to Angol Fear (who was retroactively turned into a guest character because the artist put her in his manga). I could get into reasons why I think she's awful, but this post is already long enough.
5. SW characters ended up in SC4 because the devs wanted to put them in there; Ronaldo and Salvatore are only in CotW because the Saudi crown prince bankrolls SNK and orders them what to do.

The Phase shift mechanic is good, just poorly explained and misunderstood

Almost all of the game's combat is designed around the 2d phase, wherin you have character specific movelists/inputs, a height system, just-frames, cancels, resets, okizeme, etc and is straight up a traditional 2d fighter. There's a hidden PSP gauge that racks up for each player as hits land, and when it's filled you shift from the 2d phase to the 3d phase. But 3d > 2d shifts occur off of almost any single heavy/special hit or string

So in the 2d phase, it acts as an anti-infinite system that forces a return to neutral, with the 3d phase itself acting as a sort of second layer of neutral on top of the neutral in the 2d phase. But in higher level play, it's also an anti-flowcharting, resource management system:

Since different moves add more or less PSP, or can even reduce it or reset the gauge entirely, you're ideally wanting to alter your combo routes and move choices based on the situation: You can optimize your damage so based on the current amount of racked up PSP when you land your combo starter, you change the route so the high damage combo ender lands right when the gauge is filled and a shift happens (vs the shift interrupting the combo). Or you can go for low PSP combos that might do less guaranteed damage but will keep the enemy in the 2d phase/in the corner, either to keep them psychologically pressured, to set up with buffs/debuffs, or as a reset to set up for a second combo that if landed, will do more total damage then a single optimal combo. His backdash just needs a distance nerf, Testament's backdash has similar frame data (both are 18f total and 5F invuln) and people don't complain about it as much.

Wild Assault (236D) is an offensive tool that can be charged
Orange Wild Assault (Gio and I-No have it) gives you a combo especially off far hits or lets you start a blockstring
Blue Wild Assault lets you start a setup by being very plus on block and sometimes a combo, but it has a slower start so it can be interrupted
White Wild Assault (Goldlewis, Nago, Bedman) has invuln after a few frames, knocks down on hit but is minus on block and can't be used for combos

Deflect Shield (214D) blocks both high and low, and applies a huge push back, including when you block a projectile, but loses to throw and puts you in counterhit state for a few frames if you block nothing
It can be OS'd against a left/right mixup by doing 2146D+FD

Every Roman Cancel except Yellow can now be cancelled, making you spend less Tension and letting you access frametraps, setups, instant overheads, punishes, combos or even movement options

A break with tradition that makes the throw gameplay more familiar to other fighting game players.

Throw going from close HS to 6/4D is by far my favorite change from Xrd to Strive. Throws felt bad in Xrd. The OS was boring, the instant startup meant that meaties were even harder to use on top of variable wakeup and playing a character that didn't have a good button to abuse the OS with made that character much worse.

I think a good tradeoff is having niche optional stuff that has a higher barrier of execution, but isn't literally required
Strive for example has Backdash Fast BRC Instant Overheads, Some mixups that have a manually timed 2F window to land or even 1F microdash niche routes and I think it's a good tradeoff because none of these examples are ever required to play at a casual to high level
