My wife begged me to play minecraft after watching the movie so I made her an instance on my launcher starting from 1.2.5 and she's been playing for a while, I'm gonna start updating her game by one version every time she finishes a session and see if she notices any changes.
I got filtered the first time I played Vintage Story a year and a half ago, I made pottery and charcoal but couldn't find any copper and quit because I couldn't build anything besides a mud shack and kept starving to death. I tried again two months ago and got addicted once I got copper tools and could actually build stuff, I lost my mind and put 130 hours into it in 2 weeks. Easily one of my favorite games now

I pirated it back when they had just added a dungeon, cleared the dungeon, defeated the legless machine thing, got the ebin lore, figured that was it and dropped the game.
The game is not worth more than a week of anyone's time.
I had fun but it was the kind of "flickering-flame" fun I had to STREEEEETCH for hours, to the point where the thing that drew me to the dungeon was borderline boredom. Could've installed a retarded modpack for minecraft and achieved the same.

Minecraft isn't nearly as autistic with even the simplest progression as vintage story.
But there ARE a bunch of minecraft modpacks that change the game to basically turn the game into vintage story to the point where going from the stone age to the bronze age takes you a whole day if you are as autistically committed as I was and don't drop it in like a day.

Let me put it this way.
If you spend an hour in minecraft let's say exploring the nether to find fortresses so you can continue your progression of the "story" you see multiple nether biomes, bastions full of chests with enchanted gear, gold, diamonds and maybe netherite, and finally the fortress which is also a dungeon in itself.
If you spend an hour with Vintage story's progression maybe, and just maybe, you can finally make a couple copper tools. Otherwise you just made an advancement towards finding a better copper vein.

Now I havent played minecraft in over 10y but I read this quite often and I just dont get how this can be the case. Like its a game with such minimalistic graphics, 16y old at this point and what even has changed other than new mobs and blocks that still makes it so relatively difficult to run on modern pcs who in theory even the worst of the worst should run a game like this with ease.
Tech illiterates don't check their draw and simulation distance, or crank it to max without thinking about it.

The problem is time invested vs results. At it's core most of vintage story is just making you stick with an excruciatingly slower progression so you get a bigger dopamine hit once you do manage to progress. It would be alright if there was more stuff to look forward to and explore I guess but the way it's going is just an OCD autism trap like zomboid.
I enjoyed foraging shrooms and cooking recipes, and trading does hit much better when you're so starved for resources, but I really wouldn't give it another go.
