i wanted to play all yakuza games but when i hit 4 that's when i hit perma burnout and i didn't beat it and stopped caring about yakuza
3 was probably the worse in memorability and importance. I played and finished it less than 2 months ago and I can't tell you one memorable thing that was carried onwards with the series that wasn't just "Kiryu has an orphanage now... oh it will not affect the plot in any way if you don't like it."
Yeah, I get it's technically a motivational reason for Kiryu to do things but it seems fairly small in the events that personally affect him in later games. I always saw it of a way for the writers to have an easy cover any reason Kiryu does anything as part of the orphanage. It also doesn't help that the whole thing is ignored by the end.

You have another Saejima fight out of prision in later games, yes he just keeps going back. I was taken out with that part too but it's not going to get better on his parts later in.
it's not a terribly long game but don't go directly to 5. finish 4, take a substantial break, and then play 5.

3 is the most important if you understand the symbolic layer. This is where Kiryu doomed Tojo to fail and dissolve several games later.
There's more memorable stuff outside of the story too. One of the best soundtracks, free camera, introduction of the revelation system, IFR heat actions (including the smoke break one), karaoke and several other minigames, the first dynamic boss intro, the first boss that could switch between multiple styles.

After Saejima you get to play Tanimura. Being a cop, he has access to all the key pieces of the plot. And his fighting style is interesting, more technical and uses heat actions as finishers or follow-up to parries and grappling.
Mine is fucking based though. The best villain yakuza has had.

3 was actually kind of good when you start to learn to bait-and-parry, it is a bit of a block-fest sure, but when you actually found an opening for long combo, it felt better than any yakuza combat
4 is better than 5, 3 and 1
4 and 5 have too many trash enemies slowing down the fights by constantly grappling and doing nothing with it, just waiting for the player to button mash.

3's orphanage is still the game's huge plot-point and the main motivation for Kiryu, and while some plot points were retarded as usual (CIA and Joji), the final showdown with Mine was great
4 was just a bunch of barely-connected side quests that ended with "let's put a lot of money on top of tall building to bait all of the bad guys because the story is going no-where"
Yasuko is never brought up again, despite her being ex-main motivation of Saejima and ex-love interest of Akiyama, because she's like a shittier version of Yumi

Tojo was a dead organization walking the second Nishiki blew up all their money and most of their prominent leadership died around the same time. Kiryu passing the buck to Daigo with nothing for him to do but fail was his worst act in the series, and it took like 10 years for him to apologize to Daigo for it.
i loved all of 0 through 6 but as a jrpgchad it feels really good to have a change of pace that happens to be my favorite genre

Mine represented the intelli-yakuza, the new mode of semi-legal white collar crime that actually happened in real life. But unlike Someya, he was also more traditional than so-called old guard like Kiryu. Daigo did the best he could, given the circumstances. Then Kiryu pissed it all away, almost got Daigo murdered by glowniggers, pushed the already suicidal Mine to end it, then in every subsequent game he kept coming back to wreck the younger yakuzas who tried to pick up the pieces and transition into modern reality.

Has good combat after they finally figured out how to make Dragon Engine combat work with Lost Judgment.
It also has a very refreshing story with the focus on Kiryu's glownigger shenanigans, and the final boss is one of the best in the series.
If you're on PC, set your FPS to 30 when you do pocket circuit, or else your car will fly off the track a lot more frequently.
It's good, but I love how fucking dirty and grimy the original feels.

Anyway, I've got the saves, so I can always go back if I feel like it. Right now I'm replaying 0 for the first since since I started the series in 2019, and I'm thinking I'll go for the 100% this time.

It's not just his money that was needed. People tend to forget that he brought back accountability, put an end to the Nishikiyama family and stopped a war with the Triads. After Y3 the only character that comes close is Katsuya, and even though he survived they had to quietly retire him because of course the One Piece fanfic written by Yokoyama can't have any competent characters.

Not sure why but I felt the side quests go to dogshit after 2, like 3 I did them only to over-level my character because amazing 10/10 remake with no flaws caused everyone to block. 4 I think I gave up on side content half way, 5 I just stopped all together maybe a 1/3rd of the way through because I had so much money I could just Stamina XX cheese everyones final fight. 6 Was a bit of an up tick in enjoyment but by that time it was so rehashed in what they were I just started skipping.

The way she went about it was stupid with calling out Kiryu on a massive public stage, but the biggest theme of the story is how you should follow your own dreams, rather than try to let others live theirs' through you.
Haruka never wanted to be an idol. She only did it because she thought the orphanage would go tits up if she didn't. Both Kiryu and Haruka are fucking MISERABLE for the entirety of 5 because of Park butting into their lives, and that spirals further into 6, 7G, and 8.

I find that the Yamato 2 is actually pretty great upon reflection. The boat itself doesn't mean shit. It's everything surrounding the boat. The seething people who commissioned the construction of the boat voided the treaty that ended WW2. Obviously that doesn't mean WW2 is back on, but the existence of it alone is enough to cause a real motherfucker of an international incident that will embarrass the nation for decades. But it's not just the boat itself. Japanese tax dollars were used to procure slave labor, dispose of the slaves' bodies, and silence anyone who discovered it. This aspect will cause a complete collapse of trust in government on a national level. Anything is on the table once this is out.

Majima was one of the two people who were suspecting Kurosawa and actively trying to flush him out, Saejima had nothing to do with it. And yes, Saejima is a weak, pathetic character that was a failed and unnecessary addition in both 4 and 5. This is what happens when a character that's supposed to replace Kiryu ends up in games that bring Kiryu back anyway. The only important thing he ever did was helping Hamazaki escape with the prison ledger, the whole rest of his existence is like that moment in 2 when Kiryu spends several hours driving back and forth between Kamuro and Tojo HQ.
