I really hope so. The PC release didn't seem to improve the reception all that much. In fact since Rebirth came out a lot of people have been shitting on Remake pretty hard, vindicating it's critics.

I think SE has finally learned that third party exclusives are a bad idea in this era. XVI and Rebirth probably hurt them enough to push for multiplatform releases right away. I doubt we’ll see any FF games exclusive to Switch 2, but a timed exclusive for DQ seems more likely.

Exclusives on Nintendo hardware are extremely effective though, the difference is that Nintendo didn't stop thinking about where new customers come from, whereas Square Enix took this entirely for granted and just assumed that Playstation had that sorted out, so now Nintendo see exclusives selling 10mil+ Nintendo is the top selling publisher for video games every year (average of more than 50 mil software titles per year for Switch) If Square Enix wants to recapture it's golden days they need to cut budgets and think about how they are going to get kids and teenagers playing their games, especially in Japan, but we all know this isn't ever going to happen, there's too much hubris, from both executives and key staff, look at the way that Square Enix hold themselves, they sell fucking wine and fancy clothes, they think they are refined but they are a drunk who got wasted on his own liquor sitting in a fancy club lounge.

Rebirth when? I already played it on PC and might never own a Switch 2 but I still think it would be cool. But if you're going to play only one, Rebirth is better and feels more like FF7 to me. But within the context of Rebirth, and only Rebirth, I see what they're doing. The whole deal of the Dream Worlds being some kind of Lifestream purgatory where you work out your issues before giving up consciousness is... fine. But then you have to marry that with... whatever the fuck Remake's ending was and it just becomes dumber than it already is.

7 has the same dilemma as RE6: combat is great but its too bloated. You can just make this action combat for a new ff game/ip without the weight 7 carries, specially the shipping part, which is why you have 2 entire chapters exploring with Tifa and then another exploring with Aerith because they know how fucking big the whole Tifa vs Aerith is.
With 8 they would only have Squall x Rinoa as the main one and they could go all crazy since the game ignored 98% of the cast too soon

This is kind of my rationale. I've been playing FF7 since 1999. I say this without irony, Cloud was one of the foundational fictional characters of my upbringing. And I've continuously played FF7 since then. I have a mostly completed file on my phone now. All that to say I'm extremely invested in FF7, like it or not. So when something happens that I dislike, I REALLY dislike it. Conversely when I find something I enjoy, I really enjoy it. It's why the entire remake series one of the most frustrating things for me to talk about and engage with. Because unlike say Crisis Core where I can dismiss it by saying it's a spinoff, the remake series IS Final Fantasy 7. So now when they do or say something stupid, that's the canon now.
