They did it because the AMOUNT of tariffs are retarded and tariff stacking is a thing which they don't realize.
There is a reason that tariffs NORMALLY aren't beyond 10%. Usually in the single digits.
It's not just the end product being tariffed, it's the components INSIDE OF IT, too. This leads to an exponential price increase.
China was the exception since the US has been in an active trade war with China since 2016. This is why they had large tariffs toward one another.
Furthermore a big reason these companies left manufacturing isn't JUST because of labor costs but also to be closer to the raw resources, closer to the specialized skill that the US may be lacking, etc. No amount of tariffs will EVER make up for those.
On top of THAT the tariff rate was computed not using tariffs, but the trade deficit. Trade deficit is not a bad thing. If you are a big country with a large population and a lot of money then you will naturally buy more from smaller countries with less wealth and a smaller population than they will buy from you. That doesn't mean the smaller country is "raping and pillaging" you. It just means they have more to sell to you than you have to sell to them.
Especially if the things you buy are low value raw materials that you then process domestically to become even higher value end products that you sell for a profit.
Hell "just bring manufacturing back" you really want low paying, shit quality sweatshop work back that will then make these items still more expensive and less competitive than Indonesia? Because even China is trying to move up the value chain and trying to replace the export of t-shirts and toasters with artisanship and high tech.
