As the op said every attack becomes an effective one shot, except more insulting because you have to wait 5 seconds for the enemy to drop their pants and drag their nuts across your face to get to the game over screen. Your damage gets cut in 4 even if you land every attack because swinging is so fucking slow, and landing them in the first place is a real pain in the ass. Your moveset shrinks considerably to boot. Even if mounted combat was statistically better than fighting on foot (it's not) I'd still hate it.

On Torrent, suddenly the fight feels like actual mounted horse battle and you're looping around in circles trying to get behind the enemy and worrying about stay on his left side as opposed to his right because he literally only has one or two weak, big windup moves that can threaten you when you're on that side. His move unfair and upsetting attack is suddenly a huge opening for a charged R2 and it starts becoming more and more rewarding to outmaneuver and outplay him. It's fuckin' ludokino.

Meanwhile on Torrent you just sprint away until he iniates the actual attack after the charge attack and loop back on him while starting to charge R2. If you do it right, you get a big charged R2 and his attack whiffs as you turn around to face him.

Just use torrent for the first charge by running to the right and then jumping off, and then stay close to Gaius all fight. He won’t charge at you again unless you’re retreating.

It's on the game. Pretty much no fog gate boss can be fought on horseback, the horse is a massive liability in every fight due to its shit scaling, poor controls, crippled moveset, and absence of poise, and nobody has the ring in any place where it not being greyed out is visible upon entering the arena. By that point in the DLC, the game has spent a hundred hours telling the player in no uncertain terms that their horse either can't be used or shouldn't be used. Straying from this requires clearer tells than none.
And even then, fighting him on horseback still sucks, because the horse is a piece of shit. And the boss is trivialized by a semi-decent shield and baiting him against the wall where he can't leverage his mobility.
