I agree OP, skeletons used to be a bit too easy and I think back then maybe spiders were the most dangerous mob, but they made them way too accurate, dodging the arrows is not really feasible a lot of the time especially when there's several mobs. The retards saying "just dodge" are not engaging with your core point which is that skeletons are disproportionately powerful. Any player that's skilled (and tryharding) enough to dodge skeletons consistently will find every other mob absolutely trivial to deal with, meaning the experience is still unbalanced.
I'm not sure what the solution would be, since clearly Mojang made the choice to have skeleton bows have the same characteristics (projectile speed etc) as player-wielded bows, and that makes them inherently very powerful.

The issue with hitting them back is that they can fire even while they're being hit. If you bring a shield, you have to stand right in front of them, attack and bring the shield up right away. Even with all that preparation, they can still hit you while being knocked back sometimes.

Once I started hoarding arrows myself, the game became at least 3x easier. Now I just pepper mobs from afar with arrows, no way I'm getting near 3 dudes that all have different attacks.

No it isn't, it changes depending on how close you are to the skeleton, at close range it's basically a hyper-accurate minigun.

Skeletons would have absolutely no threat if you could dodge them easily while faffing around. Zombies can still be a threat when you don't pay attention, get flanked or get overwhelmed. Creepers can heavily punish people quickly if they lose awareness. You dodge skeletons at the closest range you can then rush them after they fire their shot. If you could just dodge them whenever you want at any range in any situation then they would never be able to pose a real threat.

Minecraft combat has no middle ground. Everything is either braindead easy or actively infuriating hard. There's nothing in-between. The first night would be ok (for a newcomer) if there weren't skeletons who knock you out of your ass when try to climb 3 blocks high.

After you get your full armor and a bow&arrows, almost nothing in the Overworld can kill you. Then you reach the Nether and suddenly the cannon fodder is doing 4 hearts of damage to your iron armor. Or the Hoglin carefully stalking you from behind to knock you out of that pit. Everything in the Nether is at least double the difficulty of the Overworld:
- Magma Cubes: simply disgusting, damage on touch, damage when they die, damage. Damage. Respawn forever.
- Ghast: dies to one arrow, but God help you if you don't have a bow.
- Piglin Brutes: after you understand the trick of wearing a piece of gold armor, they throw a fucking miniboss at you. They're very easy if you just approach slowly, but you can just quit if you fall down one of the holes in a Bastion and two find you at once.

Withers and Blazes are ok, as long as you're not caught near a spawner.

Then you get to The End and everything becomes braindead easy again.

Then fucking rush them and kill them.

It's better to just rush in, "enter" the skeleton and keep flailing wildly instead of trying to time your attacks. The game doesn't bother to show you this, but there is actually a window between pushing the button to raise the shield and it actually protecting you.

They don't stay in place for the fireball to hit them back 90% of the time. People hate Ghasts for a reason: they stay floating just out of the way while pestering you with the equivalent of a Minecraft tactical nuke. One of the foremost death prompts in the Nether is getting wrecked by Ghasts as soon as you step out of the portal.

The issue is that (at least the first time), you aggro the whole Bastion if you hit a Piglin Brute.

It is extremely obvious where they're going to land and it takes ages for them to land.

Try to track 5 of them at once, or emerge near a Fortress that has lave nearby. You're getting knocked into that lava and raped by cubes. And the old-and-tried "kill room" (surround yourself with blocks and make a 1-block opening) doesn't even work properly against those fuckers because their death explosion randomly hits you.

The interval changes when you get near them. Just try this: go right up to them with your shield raised, and strike them right after their arrow is blocked. There is a pretty good chance they'll fire back (and hit you) while being knocked back, before you can even raise the shield again.

You can aim the fireball. Lead it to where the ghasts move. They're slow and big. It's a very easy thing to hit.

That's why you get a sword with high knockback, so you have better capability of preventing getting swarmed.

Magma cubes

Tracking 5 things at once isn't a difficult task. They also jump to land where you were, so just walking back and getting them to group up will stop them from overwhelming you. If you let yourself get in a position where you can run into a cube then get knocked into lava, you are playing very recklessly. They are very loud so you should be able to hear them from far away. Block off lava if you need to cross a corner or something.

Phantoms are the single most miserable, anti-fun part of the game. They add nothing but a nuisance. They aren't fun. They aren't engaging. They aren't challenging.

I feel like, even if enchants weren't available, for whatever contrived reason, getting a whole new elytra would be easier than trying to repair the one(s) you have with phantom membranes.

the only time phantoms bother me is if im trying to build at night. i dont really understand the upsetti unless doing just that thing is very important to more people than i realized.

i wouldnt be unhappy if they changed phantoms, but what should they do short of removing them from the game? maybe if the player is in a sufficiently high light level they dont spawn on you, or add another way to sleep that skips day instead of night.

overworld traversal has prgression and phantoms shit all over it. Want to travel around at night early without forcing yourself to get iron armor as soon as you make a new world? Phantoms fuck that idea up, back to the mines.. Want to build at night and you've done a good job light-proofing your base? Too bad, phantoms will divebomb you constantly. Trying to hunt random mobs like slimes in swamps, but haven't set up farms? Guess you need to sleep first, hope you didn't waste the correct moon day.

Every other monster can be handled or avoided with proper movement, or terrain management. Phantoms have terrible hit detection and kill undergeared players in a few impossible to dodge dives, they're a constant nuisance even after you get diamonds, and they have no useful drops.

The best thing would just be completely remove them. Barring that, put heavy restrictions that aren't based on being awake for X days. Only spawns in specific biomes, only dives you if you look at it like an enderman. Give it a very gratuitous hitbox so you can actually hit the fuckers. Make them very fragile, dying in a single hit. Something, anything.

All I want is a modifier for Bows that puts them back to the way before they had drawback, and you could rapid fire them.
You could even balance it and make it so you can't do heavy damage with the modifer.

They don't at all. They are dead fucking silent until they activate their explosion timer, which is too short to matter.

now that you mention the hitbox it is a little strange. the other flying enemy, ghasts, have an enormous hitbox and very little hp. granted, ghasts are typically fought in urgent situations at very long range but a standard 20 hp isnt necessary for phantoms to fulfill their evil bat theme.

Creepers are meant to punish players for being inattentive because they can easily be dealt with when you are paying attention to your surroundings, you only have yourself to blame if you die to one.
You don't get to not care at night or in caves if you aren't playing on peaceful or creative.
The only times creepers should be obvious is when they're charged by lightning.

adventure update fucked it up. pre adventure, enemy mob walk speed was much closer to player speed, making them a credible threat. if you're surrounded on all sides by zombies in 1.7.3, you're not getting out without taking damage, but in modern you just hurrrr sprint bunnyhop away to the nearest village and take their food.
1.7.3 is so cozy.. at night I hide in my house and look out the window and feel safe. there's none of that in modern, only if you have a modpack that makes enemies dangerous again.

missing the point. modern minecraft misses that sense of retaking the wilderness. the overworld was a much more oppressive threat at night requiring more careful insulating of exits and lighting things carefully, now you just sprint away from everything and never run out of food because of villages or because all animals drop meat. you can steal a village house or honestly just place a bed in the middle of nowhere, it makes no difference

player speed isn't just related to mobs, it also affects the scale of the game. the faster the speed, the smaller relative scale of everything, including mobs. the slower you are, the greater every distance in terms of travel. to explore the same distance from your base is much more of a journey before sprinting, which results in you becoming more familiar with the terrain, how you design footpaths, etc. each block is more meaningful.

true, but it adds up, considering that any distance out at night is effectively greater, so the same trip out just to cut some trees down is riskier. and while zombies aren't the toughest things, skeletons and creepers are affected by this speed thing too. skeletons take longer to get out of range from, and you can't strafe or get close to them nearly as easily. creepers too, you basically have a smaller window to escape if one starts going off near you.

there are plenty of uncommon mobs that keep things dangerous. huge caves tend to be swarming with mobs, baby zombies suck, especially with grass around and can consume your attention giving other mobs a chance to get closer. witches are horrible if you dont get the first strike and force them to drink a healing potion, trident drowned are shit heads.

spiders had their role too being faster than other mobs kind of like hostile wolves nipping at your heels and demanding your attention if you were trying to flee. that role has kind of been replaced by baby zombies those little shits.
slight segue but on the topic of classic difficulty bonemeal used to be leagues more powerful, a bone was a guaranteed bread until bonemeal was nerfed. same for trees, you might not have to leave your lit up area to chop trees at night if you have a couple of bones lying around but in modern versions youll be doing more waiting for things to grow, so youll likely scale up any farms you make too, work not unlikely to last into several nights.
