This is wrong. Barrets speeches about saving the world were just grandstanding and cope. The real motive for his actions was an ice cold lust for violent revenge. He wanted to murder and punish Shinra in any way he could to get back at them for what they did to his town. Them harming the planet was completely irrelevant to him, he only pretended to care as a pretext to justify his violence.
Eventually over the course of the adventure he manages to get over it a bit, especially after he kills Dyne. His change is similar to Clouds change of heart, where Cloud doesn't give a single fuck about the planet at the start of the story but starts to care as he goes.
Cloud never cared about the planet he just really fucking hates Jenova's sockpuppet
That fighting for her future was important to him even if it hurt him to leave her alone for that time.
