All of Gen I's weird shit aside, it was nice to have a game that was just core gameplay, without dozens of cutscenes every 5 minutes or a bunch of gimmicks shoved down your throat.
And I got to use some Pokemon I've always wanted but never found an opportunity to use before.

Romhacks have already solved this problem for older games where you can teach your pokemon "field" HMs that don't take up battle move slots, but you can also teach it as a battle move/traditional HM if you'd like as well.

HMs weren't even that bad in Gen I.
Surf and Strength were both among the strongest moves with 100 accuracy and no downsides of their types and didn't feel bad to use in battle.
Fly's 70/95 was worse than Drill Peck, but only Fearow Dodrio and Zapdos learned that, while Wing Attack and Peck were both 35/100 and then Sky Attack was the only other option. Something like Pidgeot or Aerodactyl was perfectly fine running Fly to have decent STAB damage.
Flash was literally only used in 1 location, so you could have a Flash slave to swap in for Rock Tunnel and then swap back to your 6th main mon after getting to Lavendar.
Cut was the only real issue, being 50/95 and not even having the utility of something like Swift that was not only 10 power stronger but never missed meant you had to give up a meaningful move slot for it.

Gen 2 adding 2 new Water HMs made them feel 10x worse, especially with Waterfall only really being learnable by Water types, and no physical/special split or flinch chance making it literally just Worse Surf.

He was there with cut, DID cut the right bush, but wandered off screen so it regenerated and couldn't get back in. There's been a few close calls but progress seems so far away right now. It's not impossible of course but it might take more months of him stumbling around, not that that's guaranteed to progress him any further.

Yeah. He caught some bugs, 5 Clefairies and a Diglett and fucked up a few nicknames along the way. Dig has been horrible for the run, for a while he would dig immediately after taking 1 step into Mt. Moon.
He's still wanted to go to Celadon pretty much this whole time but can't get there. Sometimes he gives up on Mt. Moon because he knows he has 3 badges and already beat it, so assumes there's no point in going through Mt. Moon again. Sometimes he tries to get to Celadon via Cinnabar and goes all the way back to Pallet Town.

As I remember, I just grinded to a bit over lvl 10. Matched my team to whatever level my starter was by the time I got Butterfree's Confusion. . Main grinding happens before Brock and then my team just maintained their higher level curve for the rest of the game.
I didn't have to grind levels until the Elite Four. Which is standard, isn't it? Even for a single mon run.

that's unlikely because of the way shin red's pokemon randomization works. It's very unlikely to shuffle strong single-evolution pokemon into early game areas.
I think I'm right about Krabby, because Krabby is actually STACKED as a first-form evolution with 105 attack and 90 defense. Good first two gym typing, Bubble->Watergun->Bubble Beam for special STAB moves early game is always good and when it finally gets Vicegrip and gets to put it's 105 attack stat to use it's a boss. Could certainly see it carrying through a lot of fights between Mt. Moon and Lt. Surge

Get your beedrill twinneedle at level 20 bro. Just remember focus energy reduces your critical hit rate in gen 1, not increase it due to a glitch. Twinneedle is a great move though and give your beedrill some fights and he'll do well for a good portion of the game. Bug is also super effective against poison in gen 1 for some reason so he's strong against many poison/grass or poison types in general
