3 seems to feel a little worse each time I replay it unlike 1 which only seems better. I ended up replaying 1 a lot more. The comboing itself in 3 is great but other than that I feel like it has a lot of flaws.

I want this and 3 to get a Ninja Gaiden 2 Black style upgrade. IE - the exact same game under the hood (yes I know it's derived from Sigma) but a graphical layer applied overtop to make it look nice. 3 in all forms is marred by the super low res textures. I think the only thing that would make Capcom think twice is how do many of the cutscenes are pre-rendered.

Having a Space Harrier mission after an entire game of hacking and slashing is dumb. The only gameplay segments remotely similar are the underwater segments, and those suck too. I was replaying it last night, and kept dying. He has no pattern, every time I restarted the fight, he threw out different shit. Including vertical lightning and spinning lightning at the same time. If controls weren't inverted, it would probably be way easier.

I have a hard time picking between DMC1 and DMC3.

The entire problem is that the enemies in 2 themselves are unresponsive. You can feel the impact of Dante's hits in one because of how some enemies go flying or how Nelo Angelo even buckles when guarding against attacks. Almost everything in 2 just sort of flinches until it shatters. Nothing really feels satisfying to actually hit with a sword.

At least common mobs you can shoot so much they actually lift off the ground.

If Kamiya got his way and made a DMC game like New GoW, he'd probably make it in the vein of RE4 since you'd have the same camera.

Mundus 2 is the main reason why I haven't tried a DMD Special Bonus run yet. Maybe I'll take the plunge soon since I've already done a DMD S-rank run, but I'm dreading Mundus the most of any fight.

It's basically like DMC3's SS rank, so to get it in 1, you need to meet the time and orb requirements while not taking damage. I don't think it'll be too bad seeing as I've already done all S ranks on DMD, but Mundus and Nightmare 3 are gonna give me a run for my money.

So much DMC talk made me actually grab the games again, hadn't played them in forever, and mother of God 2 has to be felt to be believed. It feels so generic and soulless. The levels are big and open with sporadic rorbs, no moves to buy on the menu, just absurdly expensive upgrades, demon tanks which is the first Stylish level combo I got, and the Demon Chopper that took aeons to shoot to death.

The dodge/style button in DMC2 was fun, I'm glad it lead to the style system in DMC3. But besides flipping all over the place and wall running the only other time I actually enjoyed DMC2 was the the despair embodied boss fight. Everything else about the game was garbage. Melee felt sluggish, especially stinger which lacked the power speed and force it had in DMC1. There was only one type of melee weapon, not even a gauntlet. The game's enemies and bosses all have braindead ai and simple move sets. The result of this was that engaging in melee actually felt punishing to the player in comparison to standing back and just shooting the enemy.
Also Infested Chopper is in the game. Really that's a good enough reason to call the game garbage.

Play in release order, if you can't stand 2 stop and go to 3. Reboot is not worth your time. The games are all about replayability too so you can go back to each game as many times as you want and try to beat the harder difficulties and unlock more moves and try to S rank all missions.

2 is the only one of the five that should be ignored. 3, 4, and 5 all build upon each others gameplay and are worth playing, 1 plays differently than the latter games since it started development as a Resident Evil game but is still a good game in it's own right.

Short answer, yeah. Long answer that further goes into what you care about, Dante and Vergil are half-demon and there's lots of characterization based on how they accept that fact. Dante has more of an affiinity with their human-mother while Vergil with his father, but Dante is A-ok with using his demon powers to get the job done and doesn't despise Sparda or anything. The brothers can be seen as splits of Sparda, taking aspects from his character. Vergil is blinded by power, and tends to be more calculated in nature. Dante is cocky and rebellious, he goes with the flow but also has a heart for when things get serious.
Sparda solo'd Mundus and his legion, he basically worked as a mediator between the two worlds to protect against encroachment. The church doesn't play a role until DMC4 where you play as Nero who is a member of the order of the sword, and in that game the church is literally turning people into demons to "ascend" and they worship Sparda. The final boss is a giant statue of Sparda and the pope loses because he doesn't "have a heart like Sparda did".

The Order wasn't even evil by itself, just Sanctus and Agnus. Things were fine under the previous pope but Sanctus poisoned him so he'd get to rule. DmC is good, it's just the story is absolute trash but in a so bad it's good kind of way. At its core it still plays like a DMC game just with weird controls, and it laid the groundwork for a ton of the stuff that makes DMC5. It's basically the best big action game to come out of the West in terms of gameplay.

I personally prefer it over DMC4. It has its own vibe which is still in the urban fantasy/horror genre, and it feels pretty unique as an experience in the franchise so imo there's no damage in trying it out.
