Unrelated, but my schizosenses are tingling, and I think that the nuDoom is being actively shilled in the leadup to the Dark Ages release. Inbetween the general tone of threads, snarky rebuttals to any criticisms, timing of posts, general slipups that strike me as being from dishonest newfags (eg, there's been DOOM threads posted on Anon Babble, a videogame board with no relation whatsoever to DOOM) and other metaphysical / nonverbal cues that I can't quite describe, I'm getting the same general vibe as when Starslop (another game by Bethesda) was being actively and blatantly shilled by paid third world "marketing".

I've also noticed that the general tone of these recent Dark Ages threads is to attack people who preferred 2016 over Eternal, in an attempt to get them to 'change their mind' over what the 'new direction' of the franchise is going to be - which starkly contrasts the idea of "people who don't like vidoegames and are just being contrarian". That, and the likelihood of numerous threads being made on Anon Babble with a near-identical topic within a few days is usually unlikely (with the exceptions being FotM announcements like the recent Mario Kart / DK threads or themed porndumps, like Midna / Rouge / Persona threads). Considering Doom Dark Ages releases in over a month, I wouldn't say it's quite in the public conscious yet - but it would be about the time when shills rev their engines up.
I have my eye on these threads regardless.
I can personally recommend Warhammer Boltgun and I've heard good things about both Turbo Overkill and Ultrakill (imaginative names, I know). SUPERHOT, Ghostrunner, Mirror's Edge, Neon White and Titanfall 2 might also scratch the itch; though they're more mobility than shooter.

I don't hate Doom 2016's model, but its not the boomer shooter itch scratcher I'm after atm. Everything I listed has fluid enemy clearing and map exploration intertwined, with minimal to no arenas closing off and summoning waves of enemies to clear like 2016, Eternal, Boltgun, etc.

Dark Ages actually has a shotgun that works, unlike Doom 3.
They probably saw a vocal minority showing interest in the lore in eternal and decided to go heavier with a story on this one. Plus because the other two didn’t have a story, having a story for this one is ‘new and exciting’.
Doom 3 was neither innovative or like classic doom, and it was visual vomit. What’s there to like about doom 3?

I highly recommend that you check out mappacks and mods for Doom 2 and Quake 1.
There are some absolute gems out there and it's enough of them to easily keep you entertained for a long time if you find the base gameplay enjoyable.
One notable aspect I find interesting is that Doom 2 has a much, much, much higher skill ceiling within custom levels, i.e. there are levels ranging from easy to requiring you to be a doom-god. Quake 1 custom levels are usually on par with the base game or harder, but not considerably so (contrast Sunlust to Arcane Dimensions).
Why is this important? Well, if you pick a slew of D2 wads, you gotta make sure you're not accidentally picking a CBT-tier slaughterwad (screenshots with literal legions of hell usually give them away, though), or at least sort them to work up the difficulty.
Half-Life 1 can arguably be considered a boomshoot, and it certainly can be played as one once you get past the intro levels. Try the base game, and get Blue Shift and Opposing Force if you like it. Again, tons of good mods out there.
