I dont play non eroge indie games anymore. If i can make both my peepee and brain happy, with game thay has good contextualized sex scenes part of game's plot or progression system, while the gameplay is fun to tickle the indie craving, at games that cost 14-17max and i get 10-40 hours on it, then it's very hard for me to justify non eroge games.
I was pleasantly surprised with it as a follow up. Everything seemed improved over the first.
One of a handful of games I actually enjoyed recently. I'm a sucker for games that allow you to be thorough with the gun mechanics. Things like jams and breaks really throw a wrench in your combat plan which makes you have to adapt on the fly and I think that's fun. Even just getting consistent with the rifles at range is fun, being able to consistently plink people from hundreds of meters if you account for drop and travel. It's fun.
The movement and music are good too.

I'm impressed that an artist was able to make these games at all. He's no technical master but you can tell he put the time in to be above par for his own relative skillset.
That said, I have to imagine a non-programmer is probably pushing up against the limits of what the Unreal Editor's visual tools can reasonable produce.
I hope he manages to get enough funding to supplement the technical parts and just tell people how to make the game he wants, because that's gonna be the game I want to play too.

Because he doesn't know how to work those engines and it was likely easier to find Japanese documentation/tutorials for Unreal. A lot of his map concepts wouldn't have worked any better in GZDoom at the very least, it doesn't do well with wide open spaces that can be freely traversed, especially if there's actual 3D geometry, like the later maps of BC. Build is a whole different monster far harder to wrangle than GZDoom, the only reason something like Ion Fury could use it is because it was made by the Eduke32 devs themselves.

All those engines (well at least eduke32 and gzdoom) are maintained and well documented, essentially modern FOSS engines. Sprite based games shouldn't need Unreal Engine and fucking Directx 12 with 8GB RAM min.
The only thing I ever hear people talk about with this game is the gunplay mechanics. The main character is just a stoic soldier so I personally can't see what you mean in terms of appeal.

I don't see what that has to do with my post. It being a well documented engine doesn't somehow turn a painter into a programmer, especially not an English reading one. It wouldn't be practical in terms of effort and timeframe, and I'm sure the engines have their limitations too, why even bother starting out with a more constrained engine, that is also harder to work with for people not in that field.

With utmost sincerity I say that fumbling the guns under pressure really enhanced the whole experience for me.
The fact that the systems and thus keybind sequence between firearms is just different enough to matter, just enough to cause you to make mistakes when stressed. I liked that a lot.

Overall chapter 8 was bad because of the hookshot. Had it been limited it would have been interesting. Too easy to bypass everything.
Final fight was decent but I didn't die once during chapter 8 and only maybe twice during 6 & 7 with every difficulty setting on full.
Encounters were too straight forward. There was what, two instances of scripted or layered encounters in the entire game? I wanted to be pinned down by flanking flanking enemies, but only two EX levels offered such fights and even those were easily out manoeuvred. You have too much movement for enemies to keep up with. Levels shouldn't allow you to climb above every wall and skip intended routes.
Everything else was fucking awesome though, loved it. Will play through it again on NG+ soon.

Native English speakers routinely complain about GZDoom's lacking documentation, add a language barrier on top of that and why would he bother? Again, there wouldn't even be much performance benefit with the maps being designed as they are. Could it be a better game on those engines? Sure, if he was savvy in how to make Doom maps and could write good ZScript, or if he knew Build as well as the eduke devs do and was willing to put up with the literal DOS-era mapping tools to use it. Unfortunately neither is the case and acquiring those skills would've dramatically increased dev time, and he'd be constantly running into all the esoteric limitations of either engine trying to do what he wants.

I'm torn on this. On one hand the shit like wall running I found both really fun but also really late, but having that much mobility freedom does make you somewhat overpowered. I think I'd rather have that though because you can just limit yourself. You do it tactical and realistic first, but nothing stops you from replaying it and just dominating the enemy.
Hard to say for sure if I'd like having more of the mobility stuff earlier in the game or if it would ruin it, like maybe if the maps were tailored for it.

Yup, made a lot of those segments where otherwise you're in doomslayer mode require you to keep your head straight, hallway ambushes became a lot more tense when all of a sudden you're 1 foot from a slime and your shotgun jams... Lot of fun.
I think the blessings, if you go do the extra levels after each chapter, end up making you too strong though. Not as much tension when your melee becomes your instant panic button (or even just your default once you've got armor on)

HL1 and HL2 are worst valve games, opposing force was so much better, and then there's TF2 and all of those HL1 mods (like sven coop) that were million times better than HL1 and HL2. Games like HL1 and HL2 made gaming much, much worse, since it created trends that are pure cancer. A "cinematic experience" or even story do not belong in video game, video game is where you self-insert yourself into a game world where YOU explore it, and YOU create the story/experience it, but this doesn't happen with games like HL1 and HL2, because it's more a movie than an actual video game.

There's still a lot of very specific knowledge you'd need to make something like Citadel on the engine. Programming everything the games do in ZScript would already be a pretty big task without many examples to work off of, but making Doom maps is also not completely intuitive, especially when it comes to the more advanced features like slopes and 3D floors. Citadel uses a lot of both and it would both be annoying to set it all up dev-side and it would still run like shit player-side. Something like pic related would be brutal on the framerate in GZDoom. That's a lot of 3D floors and zero broken sightlines (even those big towers you can climb to the top of, so they wouldn't cull geometry behind them in GZDoom) so the whole map would be rendered when you're looking at it.

The second is almost a complete improvement over the first and there's just a few callbacks in the second game so you wouldn't be missing much plotwise. But you might as well play the first game first, it's still good, it's not very long, and you'll better appreciate the second game's improvements that way.

I had a CJ "home" moment when I realized where I was.
I remember there was some level, I think some city level, where you travel it backwards and then realize oh fuck it's a level from the first game. Made me laugh happily at that shit.
Both the tanks and mechs needs work but I still want them. Mech more similar to votoms or Leynos with extended land thrusters as a driving mode with much larger environments as a mix up. Multiple levels as well, what we got felt so flat, even though you were climbing and jumping buildings. I want platforms with units ambushing me from above. I want fast moving aerial units/drones circling me. Lots of stuff he could do without much effort, but I understand he already had a lot on his plate.
The Arrange Mode is the definitive way of playing it. The game would've been better received if it was like that from the beginning.

Some stages early on feel harder than later levels, especially EX-1 feels harder than the other EX stages. I do like the wide open levels that let you play around with the sniper rifle.

I'm split on whether or not removing secrets was a good idea. The fact that falling out of the map doesn't kill you anymore makes exploring edges of the map less risky, but also spending time just tracing edges and humping walls isn't the most fun. It is fun when you do find them though.

That dilemma had come up for me as well, but it depends. If they don't shoot back and aren't missing their limbs I leave them to potentially survive. I found out you can press the use key to kill them if you're close enough. Or you can slide into them at full speed.

The complete lack of enemy AI is the biggest drag of the game. If he adds tactics and alternate facing sprites (for the love of god) the next sequel could be amazing.
Esqa is Martyr and Tycho's son, conceived some time during the events of the first game, he wasn't vaporized by the fruit of the ephemeral but would have died due to being removed from the womb if the Edelweiss didn't pick him up and make him its human core

I tried the demo and enjoyed the gunplay but I kind of wish there was an inbetween setting between "no gore whatsoever" and "partially decapitated crying anime girl head with nearby disemboweled torso with anatomical organs spilling out". Or even just more blood, the gore is weirder for being as bloodless as it is.
It did get me back into HDest though, although I do miss the "cock/rack the slide" input from BC - more games should make you do that before you start shooting.

Better than Q2's loredumps in text. They're not quite Marathon(which is also a boomer shooter)-tier but still.
Q2 is all about action, there's no pause.
So is HL1 once you get a weapon. You can go however fast you want in that game. If you paid any attention, HL1's game tempo is at roughly the same level as most boomer shooters. Plus Q2 isn't the non-stop action you make it out to be (nostalgia glasses much?), there is a bunch of backtracking and switch hunting and faffing about with secrets. Which, again, is typical for boomer shooters.

HL1 (and 2) did great environmental narrative, but otherwise very mediocre gameplay. It's a game worth playing exactly once. Q1 (and 2) has far more staying power, even before taking multiplayer into consideration.

Also - HOLE, a mini SP extraction shooter thing. Not really 'realistic' in any sense, but one of the main mechanics is that you need to rack the slide manually (if you're reloading from empty, or if the gun jams). It feels REALLY good.
