Disciples is a series that might not be an RPG, it's a turn-based strategy game with some RPG elements, like leveling up your units and having a small but upgradable party. Each race had a "special" unit, and for the human empire it was the Titan - a giant with a Conan-esque design, pretty good but nothing incredible.
And then in the sequel they changed Titan's gender. And it's like something clicked in my brain. Seeing this giant woman tower over every other human unit was something I was not ready for as a kid.

Special units made sense in the first game where units had level caps and paying extra upfront for what essentially is a pre-leveled unit was a good choice for static defense as you've said.
In the second game it's very easy to outlevel shit like Titan, Fiend, Yeti, and pooling XP into units with no upgrades is a waste.
