On one hand I get the sentiment that it may be a “DLC” on a surface level, but the amount of work and changes to the backend and environments and objects was insane.
Every treasure/item location, NPCs, added caves and wells, the depths, sky islands, new mechanic interactions with powers, the building and physics for them, more element interactions, 150 new shrines, etc. I would fool around with modding in icespear in BotW and I’ve document all possible NPCs, and I can attest it wasn’t a simple flip.
I honestly wish instead they did a “simple” DLC just adding some sky island dungeons and Ganondorf final boss battle, because it would’ve been out in like 2019, and by now we would’ve had a different Zelda game. TotK existing feels like if undermines BotW, even though I really liked playing it. With Switch 2 I may return to it for a replay.

Botw is an evergreen title, but the sales of tears was extremely front-loaded. It sold 20 million in its first year but only sold 1 million afterward. Botw even outsold Tears during a quarter not long after Tears released. It shows Nintendo that Zelda is not unstoppable and they need to try harder if they want to keep its newfound massive popularity.
