SteamOS officially releases

all 12 linux trannies are actually really excited about this anon

so I can now install this on my machine? what exactyl does this mean for me and others
ELABORATE

linux trannies

fat white hands typed this post

Its not enough that it exists, it has to be just as good and easy to use as windows, if not better. Steam alone proves that fact every time a new launcher appears and faceplants

It's still Linux trash so in to the bin it goes. Come back to me when I can play multiplayer games with anti cheat on it

I don‘t know. No one has tried this yet

You could already download steam os on PC it just had some hardware limitations like being limited to AMD hardware. It's nothing special.

First off; fuck you iToddler
Secondly; it came out a few weeks ago
Thirdly; its only really for manufacturers. So you'lll have to wait until more stuff gets it

This page has been up for years retard
The steam deck version is built on arch not debian

Oh is Steam OS 3 out?
Neat.
Probably won't install it on my desktop, since I've already got Arch Linux all set up, but this will be nice for some friends of mine who were looking for it since the Jeets at microsoft are gonna go full retard in 6 months

I'm pretty sure if Valve actually made SteamOS an honest to god windows competitior intended for home desktops they'd do well. The home desktop market is effectively nothing but enthusiasts and professionals at this point, no reason they couldn't take that first market.

make my very own steam machine with a 4k/165 hz screen

show it off online for free interwebz points

tendies call me a tranny because it only sold 1 unit

woooooow

Debian

Isn't that the old version

This is not SteamOS3 anon, this is justbthat old steam machine page. Look up and there are zero news about Steam OS relases.

This is old as fuck everyone is waiting for the new arch based one

yes, OP is retarded. And even so why the fuck does people want steam OS when its literally arch with steam installed

Technically if it's Steam OS 2, you've been able to install it on your machine for years, you just, probably shouldn't.
Because it's made for a version of Debian from like, 14 years ago.

If you're an enthusiast you won't even consider Linux. 99% of "enthusiast" applications don't work on it. It solely exists for people running servers or for contrarians who don't want to use Windows. For everyone else windows is the sole choice in the market.

I wish tech literacy was a requirement for using the internet

Reminder that less people (proportionately) use specifically adobe software than do linux.
And this number gets WAY worse if you account for the fact that chinks bot the living shit out of the Steam Hardware survey.

So what's the performance gain on the other handheld PCs, that's what I want to know.

we don't need to wait for steam deck 2 if steam OS on the other handhelds perform similarly

I'm pretty sure if Valve actually made SteamOS an honest to god windows competitior

Steam doesn't want it's employee's getting suicided by Microsoft

That's hard to say because unless you need and can afford the Adobe sub, you'll be pirating that shit. I've been using a pirated copy of the Adobe software suite for 10 years now. Pretty much everyone I know who does similar work is the same. Nobody wants to pay that sub.

For me, it's Fedora.

Oh it's really funny that you think I'm just talking about people that paid for ACC

a debian distribution isn't same as arch retard.

ignore the ">" btw :p

using the glownigger os

debian

that's the old steam os

the steam program itself is rancid as fuck, you can't even zoom in with the scroll wheel on it, why on earth would anyone use their OS?

fat white hands

so....linux trannies?

So this is the power of ESL reading comprehension....

Steam Machines

Debian 8

Retarded newnigger

You can play multiplayer games with AC on Linux. Just not dogshit like Fortnite, Rust, etc. Both EAC and Battleye support linux and have for years. Blame the devs of the games for not enabling Linux support.

you can...

...but you can't

I can play all of these on windows. Why would I opt for an OS which gives me less choice and variety in what I can use on it?

Why would I opt for an OS which gives me less choice and variety in what I can use on it?

you will hurt the feelings of people who have invested their entire lives into making a Linux machine work

You are a NPC

I mean if we're strictly speaking, there is literally no actual reason you can't run those terrible games on linux.
The developers are just fags.
But even then

My antishilling for linux is that you can't play fortnite or run adobe shitware which nobody likes

It's honestly not really that compelling.

so it seems.

Because Microsoft is increasingly trying to move everything off of your PC and into their servers, SteamOS will be windows-tier when Microsoft stops giving you a choice.
Scoff at it now, that's fine, it's not here to make you want it now, it's here to catch you when Microsoft finally kicks you off.

windows is still better

Low IQ people like you should stick to consoles desu

Debian Jessie

Really? I thought the SteamDeck was Arch based. Debian Jessie is ancient at this point.

Just install Arch

yeah turns out linux trannies are a loud minority that nobody cares about

GoL is plug & play nowadays. It's as simple as setting up a windows machine. In ways it's even simpler because you don't have to waste time disabling bullshit that slows down your system or downloading proprietary software that runs in the background. If you have free space on a hard drive & an hour of free time you can see this for yourself.

Either your reading comprehension is abysmal or you're purposely being a facetious faggot.

Steam Deck is Arch based. What you're looking at is an ancient screenshot of a webpage created back when Steam Machines were a thing.

OP posted the OLD steamOS page.
That was back in like 2013

People have been saying this for years and nothing has happened. I remember people saying this was the reason for the steam machine existing and in the end nothing happened to the steam machine died as soon as it was birthed. Microsoft won't give valve an inch. They're working on their own steam os handheld alternative for release this year. They're even advertising steam on xbox now because some xbox UI dev accidentally leaked a dashboard concept a few weeks ago. They are willing to give valve a pass but only if they conduct all their business through windows. And they won't do anything which makes people leave windows en masse.

JESSIE DEBIAN IN THE HOUSE

usecase?

And they won't do anything which makes people leave windows en masse.

They've been doing that for a while though.

People have been saying this for years and nothing has happened.

He's not aware of Microsoft slowly poisoning the market with Windows X S devices that can only download shit from the Windows Store

He doesn't even know that ALL the user folders on Windows 11 default to being stored on OneDrive and microsoft explicitly claims ownership to anything you've uploaded there

Desktop OS for gaming and not being fucking annoying

Users should not consider SteamOS as a replacement for their desktop operating system. SteamOS is being designed and optimized for the living room experience.

it's over

Can I install steam OS on my xbox series x and download steam games to play on it? If not, I shan’t be using it.

Debian

I thought it was arch?

Having tried it back in the day.
Valve was kind of full of shit, it's just Debian with the default user session launching right into Big Picture Mode and not loading up the included MATE desktop

I use win10
I don't have a deep understanding of computers
but in a few years when shit starts to reject win10 and mandate win11 I'm switching to linux

SteamOS is perfect if you want your PC to boot directly into Steam Big Picture and be a little more cumbersome for any other purpose than playing games. It only really makes sense for a dedicated gaming box, for a desktop there's no reason not to just use your preferred flavor of Linux with Steam installed. I don't know what these retards eagerly anticipating SteamOS 3.0 are expecting it to be, it's not like they rewrote the DE. It's just Linux with Steam, and that's been available since 2012.

Irrelevant when there are multiple versions of windows including ones which come with literally no bloat. Using some school computer OS as an example is retarded.
As for the 2nd point, just log out. It's the first I'm hearing of it anyway so I'm sure you're being misleading.

you said the same thing about win7

So much cope from you Valvecucks, everytime they compete in a new market, they lose

Lost vs Nintendo in the handheld market, 3-5 million sales vs 150 million

Lost in the VR market vs Meta/Facebook, 500k-700k sales vs 20 million

Lost in the console market, wayback with their Steam machine

List goes on and on

Lost in the MOBA market vs Riot Games

Lost in the TCG market vs Blizzard

Lost in the hero shooter market vs Netease

Lost in the autobattler market vs Riot Games

Why do you think going vs MicrosoftOS would be any different?

Man even the youtubers who game on Linux don't say it's a good alternative to Windows. For them it's mostly a privacy thing. But then you have random posters here acting like Linux is better than Windows in every way and there are no problems with it whatsoever and that if you want to play a game which doesn't run on Linux, you're the problem not the OS.

Irrelevant when there are multiple versions of window

It's ENTIRELY relevant when the near entire market doesn't actually make any real decision in what OS they use, but for whatever reason any time the conversation comes up we just pretend people actually decide what OS they use.
The near entire home computing market uses prebuilts and laptops.
And if microsoft can slowly poison the market with windows 10/11 S devices (like they've been successfully doing) it's a foregone conclusion.
The rest is just cope from unironic microsoft shills who's only job is to lie to people about windows not getting progressively worse and scare people thinking about trying a different OS on their PC.

it must be weird to be a pc gamer and you love valve i guess but hate microsoft?
it's like being in a broken household
guys you have to forgive your daddy eventually. look how old he's getting!

For a start use your brain for a minute. People use their laptops or PC for numerous things and no two people will have the same exact usage or combination of apps they use. By locking it to Windows store and killing support for 3rd party apps it will severely hurt them so why the fuck would you think they'll do that. You're fear mongering for no reason.

He doesn't even run Microsoft anymore. It's a bunch of genuinely retarded jeets that took over the company which is why Windows has violently gotten so much shittier in the past decade. They don't even have the business sense to not be retarded about their monopoly position.

Nah I like both Valve Microsoft. They've given me the best gaming experiences of my life thanks to Windows and Steam. I have no reason to hate either of them from my personal experience.

still the old ass unmaintained Debian version and not the arch version

Acts like it just came out because people who aren't paying attention won't know any better

OP's post is good bait

People use their laptops or PC for numerous things and no two people will have the same exact usage or combination of apps they use.

Like 99% of people just use a computer as a facebook, game, and netflix machine, which is completely doable in windows S.
Use YOUR brain and stop thinking like a Microsoft marketer for 12 seconds in this La La Land where literally everyone using a computer specifically has an All Adobe workflow and only plays shit flagged as borked on protonDB.

Not to mention you fucking literal actual retard
ACC HAS A VERSION FOR WINDOWS S ON THE STORE, YOU MORON.

Linux

No one cares

Nigger, Windows S is for a specific use case and for a specific market of people. And it's not its own OS, it's just a mode. Their website tells you how to disable the S mode and change to pro/home. Laptops which come with windows S mode are advertised as such. For everyone else, such as a gamer buying the latest Asus Rog laptop or whatever, it comes with bog standard windows. You're just throwing out a bunch of what ifs and fear mongering hypotheticals when reality isn't on your side. Take a sip of water already.

What’s the point without proton?

IMG_4905.jpg - 1179x530, 432.89K

This is not meant for non-technical users

This is not meant as a replacement for your desktop OS

Into the bin it goes until it's capable of being a primary OS.

All linux trannies are excited saying they use arch while waking off at they hypershit windows

Not this shit.

Their website tells you how to disable the S mode and change to pro/home.

NIGGER I GET YOU'RE AN UNIRONIC SHILL OR THINK YOU'RE BEING FUNNY AND JUST SAYING STUPID SHIT AND SOMEONE GETTING MAD AT YOU FOR BEING RETARDED QUALIFIES AS TROLLING
BUT GENUINELY HOW FUCKING COMPETENT DO YOU THINK THE AVERAGE USER IS.
MOTHERFUCKER I HAD TO DRIVE OUT 17 MILES TO "FIX" A CLIENT'S PC, YOU KNOW WHY?
HE THOUGHT IT HAD "WIRELESS", FROM THE WIFI.
THE MOTHERFUCKER DIDN'T EVEN PLUG IT IN.
AND YOU THINK EVEN FOR A MOMENT THESE PEOPLE COULD BE FUCKED TO CHANGE THEIR OS CONFIGURATION.
DESPITE THE FACT THEY DON'T AND A MONOPOLY IN THE RETAIL SPACE BEING MICROSOFT'S BUSINESS STRATEGY FOR THE PAST FUCKING THIRTY YEARS.
FOR FUCKS SAKE STOP BEING RETARDED.

oh neat.

That web page was made five years before proton

S mode should be opt-in not opt-out.

Sisters, i need your halp.
Can you view hashes of files without owning game via steamdb, for example:
steamdb.info/depot/2124491/

It's both. Some specific laptops come with it enabled, most others don't have it enabled. For the general buyer, it's an opt in feature.

I actually just switched from Arch to Debian
I'm pretty comfy but also the games I play are 5+ years old

debian 8

this is the ancient version

No it's not.
I wonder how many idiots are currently trying to install the ancient and unsupported Debian-based SteamOS because of OP's shitpost.

Some specific laptops come with it enabled

yes. that's what I'm referring to. if it's enabled by default it's opt-out. I'm aware

anon... they actually did drop steam os 3... it's not debian anymore. I checked

But this page
store.steampowered.com/steamos
as pictured in the original post still explicitly says Debian 8.
If you're right then post literally any evidence at all. Steam Deck recovery image doesn't count and isn't new.

anon didn't check the OS image

The screenshot probably isn't ancient. The page still has the same content and Valve should delete it.

no official support for my chinese gacha games

dead on arrival

File:steamdeck-repair-20231127.10-3.5.7.img.bz2
Description: Steam Deck Repair Image created November 27th, 2023
This OS image?

anon didn't post evidence

lmao
And no I will not take time out of my day to go and get your evidence for you. Post it or fuck off.

The evidence is right there. I'm not spoonfeeding it to you when you can literally just click the link to download it.

No the other one. That one is for a Steam Deck dumbass.

download version custom just redirects to the steam deck image.

linux

thanks but I like to actually play all my games, not just 20 of them and also spend 90% of my time troubleshooting why the OS doesn't work correctly.

It doesn't.

This is going to upset a lot of jews isn't it?

desktop linux remains a meme, next

Worry not, 98% of Anon Babble has never installed an operating system, and the 2% who have know better.

debian

I thought steam os was arch-based?

not even a screenshot

There's simply no reason to believe you aren't trolling or stupid. Why waste my time trying to find out? It's an image board and you can't even be bothered to post an image. I'm not just going to take your word for it.

I'm gonna stop responding since it's clear you are all trolling. How am I supposed to provide an image of DATA???? Just download it. It's the Steam OS 3 image.

can’t play media

Cool

refuses emulators

Oh now I get it

If there is a way to see that it's a SteamOS 3 image which is not the Deck repair image, then you can screenshot whatever that is.

If it can't be seen in a screenshot of what's on your monitor then how am I supposed to see it myself on my monitor?

troonix

If you think the marketplace is a battlefield where the person with the most money/sales wins the battle and takes the whole prize then you are retarded.

You couldn't even be bothered to provide a information panel showing an image of a file with a different filename and change any part of it to get a different MD5 hash.

repo.steampowered.com/steamos/README.txt

SteamOS version 3 'holo', as used on the Steam Deck, is a separate codebase based on Arch Linux packages and does not use this apt repository.

idgi why not just install arch + steam client, isnt it the same thing?

YUCK.

SteamOS Holo is not available, this entire thread is a lie. But no, don't install Arch, using anything but NixOS at this point especially if you're new to Linux is a meme.

Right, so the version that's available to the public is severely outdated.

Retarded faggots who don't know anything want to believe that the newer version of SteamOS has some special sauce that magically makes it better than just doing that.

Most people want it because it:
Comes pre-configured with a dedicated Steam Big Picture session,
Comes with a sane base software suite Arch (has deranged metapackaging)
Includes a pre-configured user that doesn't have root access so you're very unlikely to break anything
Flatpaks so you're FURTHER unlikely to break anything, and it makes it extremely easy to install and remove software.
It's relatively trivial if you know what you're doing to set up basically everything that SteamOS does on your own Archlinux installation, but most people don't know nor want to do that.

Will try it once support for win 10 drops

using APT (which everyone knows is Debian's package manager) repo dates as sole evidence of it being outdated instead of the extremely clear README statement

you're being called out for linking off to a repo yet refusing to check the README, not for making an incorrect point

The base system draws from Debian 8, code named Debian Jessie

that's an old webpage from the SteamOS from like 10 years ago, the current one is on Arch Linux

>Lost vs Nintend𐐬 in the handheld market, 3-5 million sales vs 150 million

Valve was trying to compete with Nintend𐐬?

>Lost in the VR market vs Meta/Facebook, 500k-700k sales vs 20 million

Valve was trying to compete with Meta/Facebook?

what would be the requirements for you? having a CS degree (lmao) would be a low requirement btw

The SteamOS version that's on Valve's own website(store.steampowered.com/steamos, which links to repo.steampowered.com/steamos/) is severely outdated. Thus, the version that's available to the public is severely outdated. It doesn't matter what the readme says. Am I missing something here?

Debian

What the fuck, this seems based af? I thought it was Arch

I hate that cheat engine doesn't work on Linux.

I'm interested in exploring some Linux distro's now that Windows support is ending later this month. I know it's a near-impossible ask, but is there a pro/con list that is written by someone well adjusted? Ideally not from the perma-brainrot anons that constantly bring up trannies.

can it be installed in portable handhelds?

It's Debian if you want a version that Valve abandoned years before Steam Deck, possibly even before Proton. Good luck getting anything to work on it.

well what do you want to do?

does it work on Windows XP and below games?

That's a freetardish way of saying it isn't Debian.

Steam OS 2 from years ago is Debian
Seam OS 3 is Arch. This is the modern one.
OP posted a page for 2

Valve: “It’s not a replacement for Desktop”

Get rekt loser

the problem is not that but who will replace games requiring systems below Windows 7 when the same systems aren't supported by steam anymore.

Mostly gaming, light video editing (nothing fancy, just basic clip editing to show gameplay to the boys). I also use my gaming rig for work sometimes, but nothing fancy in terms of software. Just basic web programs and excel documents. Ideally something similar in GUI to windows, since that's all I've known for decades at this point.

why would you want a computer that just plays video games?

Because the current selection of

Computer that just plays videogames

Suck.
It's also not the only thing you can do with SteamOS.

Fake news. This is the same old SteamOS 2 page that has been up for years.

MacOS shits on Windows so hard it isn't even a competition.

If you have older hardware use Linux Mint, if you have cutting edge hardware use Fedora, Arch or Ubuntu.

lol

gimping himself on a cucktop for professional work

But it literally is Debian -- "it" being the old shit pictured in the original post, that is.

SteamOS

I didn't see any news of this on orange site surprisingly

orange site.png - 417x415, 19.5K

Because there is no news.

So? Whats the reason to switch at all if Ive used windows since the 90s, like I bother to learn new stuff at this point

MacOS

lmao
didn't know itoddlers even posted on Anon Babble

Mint is usually recommended as the beginner linux distro. it's set up like windows 7 and it's based off of Ubuntu so it has a ton of support and most packages just fucking work. I personally don't like Mint though because fractional scaling is fucked up. If you want your display scaled at anything that isn't 100% or 200% it can cause screen tearing.

You could try out Kubuntu. It's got the KDE plasma desktop which is super snazzy and nice looking, but it's also got the stability and software support of Ubuntu.

As for gaming, pretty much any distro will work as long as you run your games through Steam's proton. 90% of things will run just fine but you WILL have to tinker around with the settings sometimes. protondb is a great website where people share whatever weird fix they had to do to get a game to work. Also sometimes you'll just run into games that don't work as well on linux and there's nothing you can do about it.

Video editing I use kdenlive which is perfect for cutting up video files and turning into webms and shit.

Imagine the timeline where Valve made Half-Life 3, LFD 3, TF3, etc. instead of making awful gimmick games that no one wants at the pace of a glacier (VR shit, card games with microtransactions, another fucking MOBA)

Windows sucks these days and is run by assholes
Also, you really don't need to "learn" any new stuff beyond maybe like.
Hey, your "appdata" folder is in your home folder, because it's retarded for it to be shoved way off in some folder you never touch.

also forgot to mention if you go the KDE plasma route you'll have a better time if you have an AMD card. I think there's still a couple of bugs with nvidia

Isn't game development very much different to os development? Did Valve hire a lot of os people to work on steam os?

its literally arch with steam installed

with valves guarentee i can just download it to a usb and have it install and all drivers will work and all games will work and everything will just work
i really hope they do this before the windows 10 deadline, ill probably move to linux anyway but i would rather have gabenix

for me it's the macOS Sequoia

It is linux with Steam theme shitbar

Anon Babble is so fucking retarded holy shit. this is for the old steam machines you dense motherfuckers. how the hell does this thread have 164 replies?

That guy is retarded
It's not literally just arch, it uses the arch kernel but it has an immutable filesystem like fedora silverblue

not as open as linux

worse software compatibility than windows

macOS is literally the worse of both worlds

people don't really bother to check what the thread's even about before posting

A bunch of the replies are pointing out exactly what you just did, and most of the rest are generic computer-illiterate seething about Linux.

5 years before some guy made Nier Automata run on Linux

Correct.
Through ASS, mankind achieves unity and greatness.

Nice rundown, thank you! I will take a look at Mint & Kubuntu. For payment, here is a pic of my pussy.

Pic of Kitty.jpg - 900x1600, 130.32K

Define 'cutting' edge. Is an AMD 9700X & 4070 considered cutting edge these days?

Debian, not arch

weird decision, but I guess that's fair for systems that are going to live untouchable for years in people's living rooms

is it really out? give me the link

You make a decent point, but this is also a very, very out of date web page.

I've had photos published several times. All edited on my M1 Air. Not an issue.

steamOS 3 for general use isn't out yet, but it should be this month
not that that actually means anything, there are already distros that people have put together that do what it does

in super handholdy modern engines, sure
not the style of game development that valve's used to where they actually have to deal with platform minutia
they've mostly been working on the linux graphics driver stack, including authoring an alternative shader compiler for AMD graphics, and vulkan itself

plus valve primarily handles software distribution these days which is 99% of what maintaining the actual linux distro entails

Who cares? People who are using windows will continue using windows. People who are using linux will continue using whatever distro they are already using.
This matters only for steamdeck users.

guess I have been bamboozled

Why did you answer your own question?

I already use Gentoo.

no Terry A. Davis

they hated him cause he spoke the truth. Windows is completely incompetents

Do you think Valve will also try selling PCs again when 3.0 comes out?

Users should not consider SteamOS a replacement for their desktop operating system

Then what the fuck is the point? You either give me a viable alternative to windows or you're pointless.

This was way back in 2013 and it was more of a

Hey, every youtuber, don't send us emails about adobe being fags and intentionally breaking shit and you not being able to specifically use adobe crap on linux.

itoddlers

you‘re much more mature for having spy- and bloatware on your pc

he thinks apple doesn't spy on him

lmfao itoddlers are hilarious

uh oh windows jeets getting uppity

actually having options is... LE TROON

brown country brown board

I'm aware I'm being spied on. I choose the Apple convince over privacy. I work in IT and fix broken Windows shit all day. I don't want to have to think or fix something to call you a faggot on the internet. Once my Fedora desktop is set up which takes less time than a Windows install it's also no longer an issue. So in short, poo poo pee pee

yeah I heard they're going to sell this small PC called a Steam Deck

Apple shit doesn't have any convenience over Windows nor even Linux when it comes to games
So in short, you're retarded

he uses GNOME

convince over privacy

Said everyman a before the data breach happens

good morning saar, please do the sneedful

file.png - 3238x1689, 1.26M

Now try to run it on Raspberry Pi.

I never said anything about games. I don't game on my Mac. Retard.
I don't store anything on iCloud, and I set up a TrueNAS for photos and other files which keeps basically nothing personal on my Apple devices.

I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT COMPUTERS AND WILL NOT BE INSTALLING THIS UNLESS IT'S A ONE CLICK INSTALLATION OR SOMEBODY WITH A THICK INDIAN ACCENT SHOWS ME HOW TO DO SO ON YOUTUBE. THANK YOU.

Windows 11 is quite literally the most bloated, unreliable, and temperamental OS I have ever had the misfortune of touching. If I so much as sneeze at it the wrong way the audio drivers bug out and my sound is shut off until I restart my computer, I have never had this kind of trouble even with the dogshit that was windows 10.

What the fuck is Microsoft doing?

Is all of SteamOS open source software?

No. SteamOS ships with our Steam Client program, which is proprietary software, in addition to proprietary 3rd party drivers. In the SteamOS standard configuration, the Steam Client program serves as a user interface and provides connectivity to our Steam online services. That being said, you can still access the standard Linux desktop.

Isn't this illegal? I thought the GPL mandates that if you ship GPL code with your product, you also have to license everything else under GPL.

Majority of non gaming desktop users use windows for the office applications

Apple has their own version but more gimped than Office
Linux has barebone office

steam machines

this is from a decade ago you fucking nonce

maybe on win11 but only because it's bloated pajeetware

Why would you run your mouth off about GPL when you aren't actually familiar with it?
This is almost as embarrassing as the Duckstation guy repacking Mednafen's playstation emulator with a QT front end using the wrong GPL license and having a hissy fit because people "stole" his emulator to make a libretro core.

steam is a binary.
GNU and RMS cucked on binaries and binary blobs ages ago.

So what is more convenient for, retard?

If it were to threaten windows marketshare, and didn't have all the spyware bloat, black ops would put a gun to gabe's head, and force him to shoehorn it in, just like any other piece of tech.

wasnt it released like 10 years ago?

pros:

don't have to deal with windows

friends think you are a hackermans

cons:

fewer programs work on linux, including industry standards like ms office or adobe

depending on your specific hardware, configuring some things can be a hassle

some games just won't work

free software, in general, tends to be less polished than closed source software

less friendly for a casual user, no matter what distro retards here shill

there ya go. if you're just going to be gaming on it, check compatibility. if you do any work with specific programs that aren't available on linux, download and try the free software alternatives on windows to see if they will work as a replacement.
also, keep in mind you can always dual boot (although it's a pain) so you can spend most of your time in linux and reboot into windows when you need to.
t. phd in compsci

The deck is not competing with the switch you dumb brownoid

Being able to air drop photos, copy and past from phone to laptop, find and lock devices from other devices, just werks OS, has a native terminal, great battery life, easy to install apps natively or cask, supports gay adobe, texting from my laptop and I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting.

None of those things are exclusive to macos you utterly retarded itoddler

You're only losing security updates which don't matter anyway.
Keep Windows for the few games that just won't work on proton no matter what you do.
Linux can be used for everything else.

It's not out yet, retard. That's the old ass Debian based version for Steam Machines.

Okay faggot!

Embarassing

Sure thing faggot!

Okay straight...got

You genuinely are way too optimistic to think operating systems have any chance of going beyond the two roads.

People said the same thing back when windows had 90% market share I'm sure. But they've lost 10 close to 20 percent. That might not seem like a lot to you but at this rate, in your lifetime windows may drop to sub 50 and at that point how do they get the lost user-share back? They won't be able to rely on companies only developing for windows anymore and ignoring other OSs. Windows is in a situation where their draw, what makes them stand out from the competition is their effective monopoly.

Hey, I won't knock it, I'd love to finally see Windows knocked down a peg, especially with the mediocrity of 11.

Which country is shilling linux

Not a country. But a secret cabal of Penguins ruling the world from the shadows.

Is it too much to ask for win7 that's compatible with steam and newer games.

HOLY SHIT, this is fucking huge news!

No Adobe support. It's just another gaming skinnerbox.

One thing I've noticed about Linux users as a developer is that they report more bugs. Now, at first I thought this was a "Linux is buggy" thing at first but the more I read into reports and see what windows users do more regularly, I realize that Linux users do report bugs in my work, while Windows users either not use the program or suck it up and pretend the bug isn't there. I can tell this by the fact that Linux users actually report using the logs while Windows users are more likely to throw their hands up and go "This isn't working!" without giving a log nor an explanation of what they were doing before hand.

Photoshop is the final frontier, which is adobe to support, but most of their other software has good alternatives (Like Davinci Resolve instead of after-effects).
What does Adobe have against Linux as well? Even Autodesk targets their software to RHEL and CentOS (To which people recompile the rpm packages for use on other distros).

For everyone else windows is the sole choice in the market.

macOS is the best if you aren't gaming tbqh
I know this'll cause lots of seething from broke faggots but it actually is the best desktop OS for everything other than gaming (and for games that do support it natively like Starsector it's the best entirely)

If OP weren't lying, then yeah it would be.

Illustrator doesn't have a good alternative. I know people who don't do vector graphics work will go on about barely-usable fossware like Inkscape but Inkscape is a burning trash heap, it's not suitable for serious work.

What does Adobe have against Linux as well?

I think they just don't see it as having a large audience worth the trouble of supporting. Linux is like 2% of the desktop market. MacOS is like 16% and gets supported, but MacOS also has a large proportion of artists and such customarily using it, so Adobe probably sees it as having a higher ratio of customers; even if Linux climbed up to that percentage it's doubtful Adobe would support it due to so many Linux users being uncreative code golems, but if it got high enough they'd eventually start to support it.

Microsoft hasn't sabotaged Valve which is proof that it's a nothingburger

Steam/Valve doesn't want to actually do anything outside of be a video games storefront, because if they actually manufactured a console, game controller, or OS with widespread appeal that didn't make one or two dumbass decisions that made it not marketable on mass (like the stick placement on the steam deck or made to order products), they would suddenly be responsible for tech support and repairs for those products (at least to the extent any other company in the industry is, because if they didn't they'd make themselves suddenly unpopular when they're really popular). It would cost them more money to try to double dip on a market then to just do what they do now, so they do these halfass attempts, which only dies hards who know what they're doing so won't contact support, and a few idiots who are willing to hound support until they get support actually use. But if Valve does all this extra shit it also serves as marketing (the Disney approach with merchandise, the merch overtime can make a flop movie worth producing) , and at the very least will break them even if not generate some profit (or its a tax write off). It also means if they ever actually want to 100% step into any of these markets they already have a leg in.

For a consumer desktop, you can do everything other than gaming in a web browser, OS is practically irrelevant except for the bullshit that Windows puts in your way.

Who cares about SteamOS. Pic related is the only thing you need.

Linux users are weird

Ok but if you want to do anything significant on the desktop then OS matters a lot.

Yes, that's called a workstation and it runs Windows for everyone other than hippie artfags who need the Apple aesthetic to enhance the flavor of their Starbucks.

no codez detected

Cope harder

Yeah, the games that work on it will run better, but the headache of finding which games do and tweaking them doesn't sound all that fun.
