It's a small team that built the game they wanted. They don't have higher-ups pushing them for a sequel if they don't want to do it, nor do they have another team to handle it.

There's a lot of inference in the dialogue. Like during the entire prologue they never actually directly tell you what the Gommage is, you just figure it out from how they speak about it, before it actually happens. Or the guy asks you when the Fracture happened, and you're never told that in dialogue, you just work it out from you being Expedition 33 so 67 years ago.

This is very fast turn based, you can do dodges and parries during enemy attacks to reduce damage or counterattack.

Combat is fast and with dodges, qtes and parries, it feels more like an action game.

JRPG is not a combat type.
JRPG and strategy aren't mutually exclusive.

Nah, the dodge/parry system means you have to watch enemy animations closely instead of feeling bored for a few seconds during enemy turn.
This opens its own can of worms, the dodge timings are super tiny, but you certainly won't be bored.

Combat is like Shadow Hearts with Sekiro parries and dodges. There's elemental weaknesses and resistances straight out of SMT. UI looks like Persona.
Really good soundtrack.
Realistic art style with many dream-like environments.

Overall really solid game. Absolutely amazing for a western game in 2025.

I just got Esquie and my thoughts on the story so far are that I can't tell if the obvious twists that I can obviously see coming are actually coming or if they're just red herrings. Put 1 point in vitality, agility and crit every level and you'll have a pretty easy time. You can safely ignore Might and defence, because vitality will make you tankier and healing skills/items are all percentage based. Might isn't as impactful as simply upgrading your weapons, but if you're confident in your reflexes, then you can substitute vitality for might and go full glass canon. Agility is the god stat, because more turns means more damage and more chances to break enemies so they can't even act. Crit is 50% more damage and plenty of moves give you AP, more hits, or more effects if you crit, so don't ignore it.
