Since he said this, 2 AAA Mainline Final Fantasy games have lost back-to-back to turn-based RPGs, losing RPG of the year twice, with 1 outselling both of them combined

Another turn-based RPG recently released this year, Expedition 33, again releases to critical-acclaim, likely being a GOTY contender and named RPG of the year

How does Square just keep on losing?

Square in a very retarded position they choose by themself.
They think Final Fantasy is too big a brand for a niche turn-based RPG audience, they think it should be as big as horizon and other ubislop with ~20m sales.
Making it turn-based again would be a defeat and would lead to shrinking the budget.

Square Enix went insane somewhere around FF13 and they're surrounded by too many Yes-men and outdated has-beens to realize why they're fucking up while everyone else is thriving.
They're not coming back from that until the old guard are either fired or "fail upwards" to the point where they can't influence anything that matters anymore.

the majority of gacha games are turn based

tons of them are profitable

nah, young people don't want turn based games

it's like they are stupid in purpose.

To this day FF13 is the only game I just rushed through on easy difficulty because the game was so shit that I just didn't give a fuck anymore.

200w.gif - 200x205, 382.85K

Same can be said with Nintendo and nu Zelda games.

I love FF16 for all it's flaws, not despite of them.
I wouldn't have bought it if it was a turn-based RPG. Square already makes a gorillion of those yet you're not buying them for some reason.

You think people play gachas... For the gameplay?

Final Fantasy is largely for boomers but boomers have lost interest in FF for other games. It's the Phantasy Star problem Sega is currently experiencing. The IP is for boomers and they are struggling to figure out why they can't get people into their 2025 MMO of Phantasy Star because its catering to zoomers instead of boomers.

lol the BOTW and TOTK literally eclipsed 98% of the franchise. Literally a mountain of a difference between them and the rest in sales, reception, etcetera.

where did barry go while we were gone anyway, who got haunted

And they're both shit, was my point. We'll never see something like LTTP or OOT ever again.

But I really liked VII remake/rebirth's approach to turn-based

Square is full of retards, they will crash even harder when Nomura leaves after KH4

Lmao

Totally, but Nutendo actually still make a TON of money on their IPs for some insane reason. Pokemon will print cash until the sun explodes.

This. It's beyond all reason too as BG3 essentially outsold the last 5 single-player action games they released.

Two games into the new formula they've already lost over a third of the sales.

Am I the only one that prefers them ditching turn-based? I like XV and 7Rs and while XVI has flaws I still love it.
Turn-based just doesn't feel grand or difficult enough to play. I still like old style JRPGs but turn-based is only for 2D.

images.jpg - 225x225, 8.88K

didn't they say they can no longer afford to not release day 1 on pc?
gonna be interested to see what they'll do for their next release lmao

The "lost over a third of sales" you're pretending is outrageous is literally still more than almost the whole of the franchise. You're coping hard with wanting to pretend Zelda isn't 20x more popular and successful than it was before. Denying reality just makes you look like a loser manchild.

It's also a focus group thing + the top brass pushing it. Everyone inside the company keeps saying "nonono, the kids do not LIKE turn based!"

They're right though. When's the last time a turn based game got a huge influx of zoomer supporters? Baldur's Gate 3 doesn't count, that shit was liked in spite of the turn based combat not because of it.

It's shit!

Why? Because I say so.

That's great, man.
I like ALttP and BotW.

When was the last time-NO, YOU CAN'T USE THE GOOD EXAMPLES!

At that point we can just say every turn based game ever was popular "in spite" of its gameplay.

Want to be a DMC clone

Somehow less playable characters and weapons than most DMC games

O-oh it's to account for RPG players

Somehow less playable characters and weapons than most Action JRPGs

FFXVI actually went full retard and catered to no one by tryibg to cater to everyone.

How about you try to give me more than one then?

...get broke!

Pokemon. It sells millions every year and kids eat it the fuck up.
But you'll just say it's in spite of the gameplay. At which point we can just say it for every game like that? Chronic Trigger? In spite. Dragon Quest? In spite. Etc.

But it's strange; we never go on the assumption that people like action games in spite of their combat. It's a flawed premise based on accepting that your own bias is correct from the outset and conforming all evidence to fit your conclusion.

Pokemon sells copies because of the IP

Yeah, see: no success will ever count to you. Doesn't matter if I point at Persona, either. You'll say it doesn't count. But these same rules and exceptions don't apply to other genres.

You're a retard.

I still remember when a person I talked to at the time was measuring my "adeptness" at video games and said to cross some magic arbitrary threshold they established in the moment, I had to slog through Gran Pulse
Which in hindsight it seems like one of the most pointless achievements to ever get considering the consensus on the game even years after release
But this was in an era where RE5 of all games determined whether you were the shit or just plain old shit

calls others goyim

only cares about profit

Why hello there schlomo!

A guy on Twitter said it once, that means that it defines the majority

That's great, Barry.
You still ignored the actual point of the post.

test

Hes not wrong tho. The majority of pokemon fans wont even play romhacks that just straight up improve the quality of these games because its not a licensed nintendo product. They are mindless consumer drones, just as nintendo wants them to be. Nintendo is the one pushing price hikes right now because they KNOW their cultists will just buy it no matter what.

The majority of Pokemon players are little kids who don't even know how to right click a file. Yeah, Nintendo fanboys exist, bit that's not the point. This whole "actually, every successful turn based game? All of them are loved in spite of being turn based" argument is ridiculously stupid.

Most gacha games play themselves to a large degree

wouldnt have mattered if it was still a good game. plenty of non turn based rpgs do very well, but they tend to be actually good. or at least not completely incompetent like anything made by squeenix in the last 20 years. their fucking list of games in that time period is abysmal though ironically I guess the only good ones have been turn based anyways

This is a terrible argument. Not only are a lot of gachas not turn based at all, but they all have such busted gameplay nobody actually plays them for that. The gameplay is an excuse to have the gacha.

Nintentards are fucking soulless.
Daddy-Nintendo brings them back to their childhood when that company was the only thing raising them while their parents were absent from their lives.

turnBASED game does well

N-NO T-THAT D-D-DOESN'T C-C-C-COUNT!!!!

Action sloppers sure are something

Like said it doesn't matter if it's turn-based or not it just has to be good. Their action games just haven't been good. This argument for or against turn-based is completely asinine.

But he's right though. No-one plays turn-based games because they're turn-based. The most popular turn-based games are praised and talked about for a lot of things besides their gameplay. No-one talks/talked about BG3's gameplay despite it being highly praised and named GOTY. No-one cares about Persona because of it's gameplay. The most talked about thing is about the girls, characters, etcetera. The most popular Turn-based games are always as popular as they are in spite of them being turn-based. That's just reality.

No-one talks/talked about BG3's gameplay

What are you talking about? That's the main thing it's good at. The story and characters are meh.

the gameplay is good because it uses D&D rules which doesnt necessarily be turn based. DDO uses 3.5 and its an action game and still manages to be very good. I think turn based just makes more sense if you want a bunch of party members because you can micro manage them all unlike an action game where they're just on autopilot

good game good

bad game bad

Simple as

No-one plays turn-based games because they're turn-based.

Then why do we have tons of people constantly bitching that they miss FF's turn based combat?
Why do people discuss the gameplay of SMT and Pokemon at length?
Why do people buy DRPGs?

Fuck off. Your entire argument is based on "actually that world conforms to my opinions."

Who's out here talking about FF7R or 16's gameplay? If the gameplay isn't the part that matters, then why is Square being so autistic about avoiding turn systems?

It's pretty funny that even games as shitty and cheap as modern pokemon games can still sell a jillion copies while being turn based.

I never understand the retards who decided the numbered Final Fantasy games shouldn't be turn based anymore. Just make a new spinoff series for the shitty combat and keep making turn based for the numbered games

Then why do we have tons of people constantly bitching that they miss FF's turn based combat?

Because of nostalgia.

Why do people discuss the gameplay of SMT and Pokemon at length?

SMT isn't even anywhere near close to being popular, so you even bringing it up hinders you more than it helps, and validates what I'm saying. No-one plays Pokémon for it's super interesting turn-based gameplay. Hell, Legends Z-A is moving away from Turn-based and practically no-one cares that it is. Which really shows how the turn-based Gameplay of Pokemon isn't what people care about it for.

To this day I find FF13 and the excuses Square shat out to explain all the flaws of it (towns are "Too complex to do in HD!" so here's a save point that serves as the only shop for the whole fucking game) absolutely inexcusable, the fucking 20~22h hours STRAIGHTEST LINE POSSIBLE in a JRPG is a testament to their stupidity in game design.

Worst thing is that despite completely controlling player progression, they were incapable of balancing their encounter difficulty and most of the fights ended up being so easy that I only felt like I really exploited its combat system for 3 fights in the whole fucking game.

I really wonder how the fuck Toriyama wasn't fired from the franchise for it but was put in charge of two extra games to wank Lightning.

This is some fascist ahh rhetoric frfr. Think of the heckin investors, anon! But seriously, it's mostly the investors that ruin modern games

No you don't understand Squeegee NEEDS ARPG slop because how else are they supposed to show you all the cool flashing lights and Hollywood action sequences if you're playing as four niggas in a row?
