i think tlou2 is a rare situation where bad writing torpedos an otherwise great work. it just doesnt typically happen because having good writing is typically a prerequisite to have it adapted by other people. druckmann just found a way to weasel his way from a programming role to a design role and then somehow became a writer using favoritism.

since he didn't really get his writing role through merit, he doesn't really understand the fundamentals of good writing. i think he's the picture perfect image of a midwit, since he can sort of replicate other works but he doesn't understand what makes them actually tick. the best example of this is that he tells the audience what to feel instead of trusting them to come up with their own feelings: he wants us to feel like revenge is bad (kinda trite but whatever), but instead of showing ellie getting revenge and not feeling any better, which would be intuitive, he instead has the characters behave against their own motivations and have them directly try to tell us. but because its the narrative equivalent of the writer going "just trust me bro", it comes off as an insulting cop out to anyone who isnt a complete retard.

That and the subtle changes to the ending of the first game that they showed in the introduction to the second game to make Joel's actions seem more evil, Druckmann retconning that it was cannon that the Fireflies would have been able to produce a vaccine, it's just very sloppy and manipulative. That's a stupid way of looking at it. Just because the medium is interactive doesn't mean every single aspect about the game has to be able to adapt to player choice. A game can have a strict story it wants to tell with the player just controlling the fun part. Best case scenario the story is also being told through the gameplay so that it doesn't feel like story and gameplay exist in different categories which I'd argue is the single worst thing one can say about LoU's story and the only reason I'm always slightly pissed off when I see people praising it as a big step in storytelling in gaming.

Multiple choices always makes games worse if the game isn't written correctly to handle reactive dialogue. Fallout 1 and VTMB are probably the only games that ever handled the interactive story elements correctly and it was written by diehard dungeon masters who'd played every TTRPG known to man. If the studios KNOWS they can't write reactive dialogue or handle reactive story elements, its better if they stay in their lane. Naughty Dog can't do reactivity, their games have never tried to let players make plot choices.

lolwut? Ned is the protagonist of AGoT. He has the most PoV chapters of any character in the first book and Sean Bean was the central actor in the show. The thing is the story does a good job setting up to Ned's death.
The difference is Ned's death was the end of his story arc. Everything in the story was set up to lead to his death. Hell, his first scene is him committing an act of injustice beheading a man for (technically) breaking the law. What happens to Ned at the end of his arc? When you do a sequel and bait and switch kill off the original protagonist at the beginning it's a bigger tonal whiplash because you were promised RED 2: THE RETURN OF RED and got BLUE.
Leto isn't the main character so I don't think it's comparable, it's Hamlet/Lion King where the main character is the prince so his dad inevitably has to die so he can rise.

There are many, very subtle, ways with which the game makes you like Abby.
For example, you can play fetch with the doggie. Only likeable people play fetch with dogs. She is also supportive of having a six months or so pregnant woman on a phisically intensive mission. Were she unlikeable you'd have her say something against it, since she doesn't that means she must be likeable.
I don't blame you for missing them, mind you, these are very subtle hints expertly woven into the script and you need a certain degree of expertise to pick up on them.

The whole game is about how Abby should be allowed to take revenge on Ellie and how she's not allowed to take revenge back on Abby and how revenge is bad, and then to have Abby walk away free with a tranny called Lev.
While Ellie is left with nothing and some missing fingers so she can't even play guitar anymore.
