I think Heavy Gear might have the best explanation for mechs. Gears (mechs) were designed for a world with rough terrain and shitty atmosphere where wheeled/tracked vehicles or aircraft aren't always practical and originally filled the role of more durable infantry fire support. They're too small to suffer the typical square-cube problems mechs face and are powered by practical internal combustion engines. They usually get shitstomped by tanks or other specialized AFVs when they're actually practical to use.

But eventually the protagonist of the current season would teach the kid the power of friendship and then they'd team up to defeat the evil computer virus.
And the first season's localization (literally Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad (yes, that's what SSSS refers to)) made the villain kid like... the most pathetic person you could possibly imagine. Like, just look up an episode. Any episode.

But ANYWAY, the season that put the series on the map went full anime, and instead of the usual formula, it was like... a DREAM entity... and it gave full lucid dream powers to a girl, and she was acting as a villain against people who were literally of her own creation. And somehow, these protagonists, who I must reiterate are of her own making, managed to convince her to wake up from a neverending dream in which she is literally God with a capital G. (B-But it's NOT REAL!!)
