SEGA absolutely wanted Boom Sonic to completely take over the franchise. They didn't actually ever say that outright of course, in case the whole thing went tits up (good call, lol), but it was VERY clear with how they were handling the franchise at that point in time they wanted Boom Sonic to take over like Adventure Sonic took over what was retroactively made 'Classic Sonic' with Sonic Adventure.
Only reason why we're not inundated with sports tape to this very day is due to how hard Rise Of Lyric flopped, and as such left a massive shit stain on everything around it. Aside from the TV show, which was halfway decent despite it being attached to Boom, not because of.

These look worse, the brow changing shape when his eyes are fully open is better. This sort of thing is basic cartooning. Your edits look like how modern Sonic's eyes are handled where they're constantly the same shape regardless of expression and it looks bad.

Also the flat nostrils suck, even Rare DK hasn't had those in like 7 years. He got the 3D nostrils back in Tropical Freeze's re-release and his design was better for it.

I was hoping the rounded features and closer eye gap (or none at all) was hinting at Jr. coming back and being a separate Kong from both Cranky and Rare. But that raises more questions, because Cranky would be the young Kong to be around when Pauline was, so this isn't an origins of New-Donk.

The silver-lining is Pauline is being used again for games, and that's something. As for the designs, even minor things like how Mario, the platformers, can have vastly different artstyles when compared to Mario the franchise.

My guess is that this is a prequel of sorts. Both DK, and Pauline, are younger, hence why DK looks and acts more goofy. The Kongs are living underground in this one, and my guess is that it'll be revealed they'd been forced down there some time in the past. Not only will DK return young Pauline to her people, but the game will end with the Kongs arriving to the surface and reclaiming it, setting up the world we see in Donkey Kong Country
