Cities skylines is my favourite game of the past 10 years, almost nothing is as good as cities to get me zoned in and just grinding away on building the pop. It has tons of mods too. The downside is the build size on vanilla does cap at 6 squares and the 32bit build can limit performance. But watching all my citizens go about and smooth as fuck traffic is extremely satisfying.

The car is the least efficient mode of mass transit and the most reliable form of personal transport is your own two feet. I also have a car, and can go anywhere public transit goes on it, but it's usually not worth bothering with it just to shave 5-10 mins off of your trip. Those two things aren't mutually exclusive, you can have walkable cities AND cars, it actually makes driving better since there's a lot less cars on the road relative to population density because public transit or just walking are actually viable choices.

Like if I built a theater very early in my city's timeline, I want to be able to protect the theater as a historical landmark and keep its architecture the same as the city grows around it or other such buildings.

Nobody living out here wants to use metro to get around. It’s slow and inconvenient, cost isn’t even in it, it being cheap is why it exists (for people who are too poor for cars, it costs the city less than buses would to move the same volume). The only time anyone I knew ever used it was to get to/from downtown clubs since they would be drinking, but even that largely fell apart as Uber came to prominence.

Meanwhile, I moved to where I am now in the US because I am ONLY a 4 hour drive away from my dad and grandma in either direction. You’re missing the point. All of the supposed virtues of rail travel are inextricably intertwined with its drawbacks. The point of rail travel is that it moves a lot of people at the same exact time. That’s why you use it. It only has economies of scale when it moved lots of people at once. In order for that to happen, no matter how much infrastructure investment there is, it HAS to take people from one place to another all at once. You are missing that point by arguing for “more rails”. The city isn’t refusing to build more rails because Nissan is paying them off. They’re refusing to build more rails because there aren’t enough people who would use them to justify the cost. They have to move a lot of people at once to be worthwhile. The whole disadvantage of rails, the reason they suck, is directly tied to that: you don’t go where YOU want, when YOU want, you go in the same cattle car as 150 other people when it’s time for the cattle car to go.

You can imagine system where the rails all go where you want them to go, when you want them to go there. But if that rail system was actually realized for every citizen, you’d basically just have invented taxis and changed what they look like. What you are experiencing right now is the exact PROBLEM with rails: they never actually go where you want them to, when you want them to, because everyone’s needs have to be sufficiently compromised to get them all on the same train at the same time.

The rail networks were bigger back when cars were less common because there was no better option, but the only way to justify a rail network like that now would be to take cars AWAY and force other people into the trains so they were actually running at capacity. Otherwise, it’s just a public-works version of an uber driver taking you to work, because if the train ain’t full enough, there was no point using a train.

Trains are only advantageous in the specific circumstance where they move a lot of people at the exact same time and that's also everything that's wrong with them. You can't make the argument for a highly dispersed rail system that accommodates the needs of all the low-income commuters in a city and justify it by saying "yeah but it can move 900 people at once", 900 people aren't USING all the imaginary lines you've laid down to make these people's commute more affordable.

You have to pick one. You want the actual, measured advantages of rail travel, namely the economy of carrying large numbers of people at once? Fine, but you have to take with that all the drawbacks that come from carrying large numbers of people at once; namely, the lines can only be built and run between points where that number of people are actually going to be traveling all at once. Which is precious few places that any one of those riders actually wants to get to. Which is why there are so few fucking rails.
