Does Fallout 1 and 2 still hold up after playing New Vegas?

Fallout.jpg - 250x200, 23.18K

"Do", Ranjeet. "Does" was incorrect.

Just finished 1. It's a to talk fucking turd.

they are better than new vegas in most ways, but it depends on your tolerance for old games
I recommend using mods to play them both in fallout 2 with sfall speedup and the inventory filter mod

New Vegas is the one that struggles to hold up in light of 1 and 2.
t. 1999

It's good, but it's overrated
They really didn't have enough time and money so both games are very short and unfinished and the gameplay is very rough in places
This is bullshit
New vegas has plenty of problems but it is far superior to the original fallout, both in quantity and quality

Is that gzdoom port of fallout 2 finished yet?

OP here. Is it a good idea to play it on Steam? I know this is a weird question, but sometimes Steam versions of older games are broken as fuck. I tried playing Planescape Torment on Steam and it was just broken as fuck.

quantity sure, there's an additional 40 hours of fetch quests and open world meandering in New Vegas
quality? fallout is one of the best designed RPGs in existence and almost perfectly executed. it shits all over the console FPS masquerading as an RPG

It's fine.

yes, the steam version of 2 comes with a mod to help on modern hardware. don't think 1 does but you should use the "fallout 1 in 2" mod along with inventory filter mod

I'm one of the faggots out there who thinks Fallout 1 is the ONLY good one. NV isn't bad though. If you liked New Vegas you'll probably like all of them assuming you can get past point and click gameplay.

I don't think so, the combat is quite slow and boring. Even in the realm of isometric RPGs, something like Arcanum completely mogs Fallout.

Bethesda at least keeps it maintained enough so that it's not a broken entry in their mega fallout franchise coomer bundle. But, there's better fan made options and they removed child murder if that's something you're into.

there's an additional 40 hours of fetch quests and open world meandering in New Vegas

New vegas has basically none of this shit
Even the simplest fetch quest or location most of the time has something interesting to offer

fallout is one of the best designed RPGs in existence and almost perfectly executed

No, not even close
Fallout 1/2 are full of problems
Most of the moments that are usually blamed on the old age of the game are just dogshit design
They came out right next to Baldur's Gate and JA2 which are perfectly playable to this day

it shits all over the console FPS masquerading as an RP

You sound like one of those faggots who's never played a CRPG other than Fallout

sure, but combat is a pretty small part of the game.
new vegas is mostly killing random enemies in the open world with some of the worst combat out there.

the turn based combat is very simplistic yet still vastly superior to bethesda shit gunplay lmao

but combat is a pretty small part of the game.

Have you even played fallout?
Fallout 1/2 have a lot of combat, NV actually has less since you can use your skills much more often and there's no constant random encounters
Most of the quests in Fallout 1/2 are combat based, social quests are in the minority

Fallout 1 supremacists are some of the most delusional people on par with fallout 3 fans

Even the simplest fetch quest or location most of the time has something interesting to offer

maybe to you. mechanically there's little interest in the combat, which is the main focus, and the roleplaying is marred by the casual approach to infallible skill checks and lack of consequences.

Fallout 1/2 are full of problems

2 yes, 1 doesn't have many aside from minor things like inventory UI, animation speed, and small QoL stuff added in 2
JA2 is a better game but more tactics than RPG. I'm not a fan of RTwP personally but BG1 is good, haven't gotten around to 2 yet

You sound like one of those faggots who's never played a CRPG other than Fallout

my other favorites are Age of Decadence and Underrail. Space Wreck is the last one I finished
classic fallout is mostly spent inside the hubs talking to NPCs and problem solving. you traverse the overworld pretty fast (especially in 2 after getting a car) and those random encounters are determined by outdoorsman and luck, which make them more interesting than the static world of new vegas that you slowly walk through. they had to add a fast travel in new vegas because of how tedious backtracking the open world

played them after nv and 1 rocks, better than nv but in a different way, it's just a lean adventure game, barely a rpg
2 is too bloated and sucks as an adventure game, worst of the three

classic fallout is mostly spent inside the hubs talking to NPCs and problem solving

Most of the time you wander around the map and want to kill yourself over another random encounter
Like, I get that you love fallout 1, it's a good game but everything you're saying is complete nonsense inconsistent with reality
Fallout 1/2 role-playing system is just dogshit
Agility is just too strong and most of the skills are basically useless
Game is very simple (but still frustrating) if you know what you're doing
After a certain point in the game you just don't even bother to level up your skills because it's a waste of time
You can literally finish the game without a single level up without putting in any effort, fallout 1 is one of the most casual CRPGs out there
New Vegas may not be harder but it's much deeper and more detailed, I still find new quests, unique dialogues and other things. Neither original Fallout nor bethesda rubbish is even close to it

greatest CRPGs ever made. Great lore, great atmosphere, straight to the point, great build variety. New Vegas feels like a COD clone compared to OG Fallouts

great build variety

lmao
It's a shame that such good game has such retarded fans

Most of the time you wander around the map and want to kill yourself over another random encounter

random encounters are only bad in the harder areas of 2 where you get 1 round killed by enclave patrols. otherwise they're just standard encounters that you're always free to run away from in a few rounds.

Agility is just too strong and most of the skills are basically useless

I think skill imbalances to some degre are good in classless RPGs as not to make every choice equally impactful, although traps is fucking stupid and throwing is useless outside of meme flare stuff
I like that the gams are casual and approachable while still offering a lot of room for role playing options

something like Arcanum

Wasn't that game known for having the most awful dogshit gameplay ever designed?

You need to understand that a lot of Crpg fans are people who pretend stuff, they love to pretend they know it all, they praise the games mindlessly and hope that nobody notices it because few people actually played these games.

If they do IQ test, im pretty sure Crpg fans will score among the lowest, they are bottom of the barrel idiots.

still offering a lot of room for role playing options

lmao
Fallout 1 is really bad at roleplaying
It's pretty short on quests and you need experience, but once you get enough experience no skill check will be a problem

This.

To people who played 1&2, how do I get into them? Loved New Vegas but keep getting filtered. I should also note I didn't play any other CRPGs. Should I do so before trying to get into OG Fallout?

Fallout 1/2 have absolutely dogshit gameplay so starting with other CRPGs is a pretty good decision
Well or you could just force through them, they're very short and don't require a strong grasp of them

Is it just me, or is Fallout (1 and 2 in particular) one of those things people convince themselves are better than it is just because they like the setting?

ESL lecturing somebody about English, now I've seen everything.

still vastly superior to bethesda shit gunplay lmao

You say that and yet NV somehow made it even worse.

Yes

I played New Vegas first then Fallout 1, haven't gotten around to 2 yet. I don't really have much to say, I liked Fallout 1 plenty but not more than NV. What did happen as a result of playing in that order is that when I went for 3 and 4 I had to force myself to finish them because of how much I hated pretty much everything about them. New Vegas has pretty good complexity when it comes to it's writing, Fallout 1 is pretty simplistic but it's a simple does best kind of scenario where the story really does grab you even if there's not much to it, the complexities come in the form of quests where you have a tough situation where you must choose sides and neither is objectively correct. They both have a type of serious writing and dark humor that contrast really hard with the bethesda games where they try to make everything super complicated while writing stories like a fucking kid would, it's all surface level stuff where things only kinda make sense but they're boring and black and white and everything just feels very forced.

NOOOO HOW DARE YOU NOT DIE AT THE REACTOR WHILE YOU HAD A COMPANION THAT IS COMPLETELY IMMUNE TO RADIATION, YOU COWARD!

We kidnap people and replace them with wobots, that will help the future of humanity because... Because it just will, ok?!

Most of the time you wander around the map and want to kill yourself over another random encounter

You'll encounter maybe 1 or 2 hostile random encounters every time you travel. That's not a lot.

Agility is just too strong and most of the skills are basically useless

Only if you make a character without investing in any other combat attributes. Only a few skills are truly useless.

Game is very simple (but still frustrating) if you know what you're doing

Might as well say "people die when they are killed." And what exactly is so frustrating about it?

You can literally finish the game without a single level up without putting in any effort

By getting the bad ending? That's finishing the game, but not beating it. Beating the game at level 1 requires you to take certain builds and take very specific steps.

Only playable if you turn up the speed 10x or so. Its so necessary that mods to do this are included on the Stream version, though you do have to enable them yourself.

You can't read, you can't even type. It was over before you even installed the game.

Try New Vegas or 3 instead.

nothing holds up against FNV. its one of those games that can change your life

We kidnap people and replace them with wobots, that will help the future of humanity because...

because devs watched blade runner and thought it was cool

Only a few skills are truly useless

Most skills are useless
Combat skills suck because you are very limited in your choice of weapons at the beginning and in their effectiveness at the end.
Trying to play with energy weapons or melee will cause you more problems than good
Social Skills are limited to Speech
Stuff like Repair have literally two uses per game and you can reach the required skill levels without investing a single point

Might as well say "people die when they are killed."

retard
By ‘know what you're doing,’ I mean basic knowledge and common sense
You can only lose if you've never played a game like this before

By getting the bad ending?

What the fuck are you talking about?
You can blow up Mariposa without resorting to combat and without requiring any skills. In fact, you have to deliberately walk into a room full of enemies to start a fight there
And in the case of Cathedral you can easily get two Paladins after a couple of bos quests and they will kill the master

Beating the game at level 1 requires you to take certain builds and take very specific steps

No
The easiest way requires no skill or game knowledge, you just follow the main story
