I don't really get why Touhou has a following of people who don't play the games. After all these years of being exposed to it everywhere, I have failed to culturally osmose anything about it other than some of the character's names, the fact that it's about some shrine maidens and youkai, and the music. I have never once seen any obvious hooks for people to latch onto and start caring about it to the extent that it has the level of popularity that it does.

I understood why MLP caught on and why people associated with the characters. I don't understand how or why anyone gives a shit about a shrine maiden named Reimu who does ??? "Oh here's a fumo of this character." Okay, what does this represent? I don't fucking get it.

But what is the source of that appeal? MLP fans have the cartoon, for example, and everything they do revolves around that. Touhou games don't seem to be the source of the Touhou fandom, though. As far as I can tell, the only purpose the games serve is introducing new characters and establishing which ones are friends and which ones have beef on the most surface level possible. It all just feels very intangible, which I find unsettling given its apparent cultural magnetism. Like being drawn toward the event horizon of a black hole.

The Touhou games have good lore and worldbuilding, but most secondaries are drawn only to the gacha Lost Word and that game is complete trash. It completely shits on everything Touhou is and even Zun doesn't like it, but it's still alive because I guess it makes him good money or he can't just revoke the licence for it willy nilly.
So basically most people treat Touhou like a gacha and just want to fuck the girls, but Touhou is much more than that, it has lots of books and official manga and CDs with their own story within the touhou universe.

I think Touhou being a part of early chan culture got a lot of people hooked. Some of the best flash animations of all time are from touhou fags

1. You have the primaries who actually play the games (shmups AND spinoffs) and can successfully 1cc. They play because they like the worldbuilding, story (each game has a plot), characters, music, and most importantly GAMEPLAY. They're a minority of the population, and they may indulge in the vices listed below...

2. You have the filthy secondaries who latch on due to the memes generated by the fandom. They cannot reliably get a single 1cc and their only successes (if any) are in the spinoffs alone which do not count. This is over 90% of the fandom unfortunately. They may like the worldbuilding, story, characters, but whine about the gameplay. Also they are prone to having their own headcanon as a way of appearing smart to make up for their lack of skill.

can someone explain how pcb extra unlock works? the wiki isnt clear and ive read conflicting explanations
the total at the start of the results screen is irrelevant to unlocking extra, and it combines captures on all characters, right? but not each shot type?
if i have, say, 8 & 6 captured on reimu A/B and lets just say the 6 on B are all included in the 8, it counts it as 8 right? not 14?
then under the same hypothetical assumptions the other two are 5 & 10 and 20 & 30, it'd be a total of 48 out of the 60 required? 8+10+30 overall for reimu/marisa/sakuya?

i basically just need to pick a shot type for each of the three and do a few runs on easy/normal just to check off random early spellcards to unlock it?

Important notice, you have to complete your run so captured spellcards count, clearings stage 1-2 and leaving won't work.

To unlock Extra, beat the game as a character on normal without continues.

To unlock Phantasm, beat Extra as the same character and capture 60 spellcards on any difficulty.

Bullshit. I opened up Lunatic and captured Stage 1-2 spellcards and got Phantasm unlocked.
