Is it true that you should upgrade your GPU every 2 years when it comes to gaming?

New to PC gaming here. I’ve always been a console player, with my last system being a PS2 (lots of good memories there). Now that I’m settled into family life and have a stable income, I wanted to rekindle my love for gaming.
I bought all my parts from a buddy’s family-owned PC hardware store (Ryzen 7600X and 4070 Super build — around 3K CAD). He advised me to upgrade my GPU every two years to keep up with demanding games. I joked that he just wanted me back as a customer, but he seriously brought his uncle over to confirm it’s a good idea plus they promised me a discount on future upgrades.
Is that really true? Do you guys upgrade that often too?

consoom. consoom. CONSOOOOOOOOOM

You should only upgrade when someone releases a good game you can't run.
Every 10 years or so with how things are atm assuming your card doesn't burst into flames (likely).

If you want to be certain to run the newest games at 4k with maxed setting at above 60 fps, yeah about every two years is the move. Most people do fine with every 3-5 though.

no, cpu is every 2 years. gpu needs upgrading every 6 months

i built a thousand and a half dollar PC in 2022 and play only indie games so I expect that I don't need to upgrade ever

You only upgrade every two years if you have money to throw away and want to show off your wealth by bragging about buying a new xx90 GPU every gen. Otherwise you just upgrade when the performance you're getting doesn't hit your standards anymore.

every 2 years

More like every 5 years now.
If you play AAA slop like a retarded mutt then you'll probably be in the 2 year cycle.

No the human eye cant see above 1080p, which is why the stream average PC gamer is still at 1080p.

Depends, if you are always trying to play new AAA games with all the graphic effects up to high or maximum, highest resolution possible, highest frames possible at all times then yes, usally updating your hardware every couple years is required. If you don't mind playing games at medium or low settings, if you don't mind lower resolution and frame rate under 60 then you could potentially go a decade without upgrading anything, and be perfectly happy. So, it depends on the gamer. I have a 5090 that I don't even use. Fully assembled PC that just sits in my closet. I play all my games on a 3080ti set up. Medium graphical settings, 60hz 1080p monitor.

the games are all UNOPTIMIZED GARBAGE made by INDIANS
so if you care about playing the latest unreal 5 DOGSHIT with FAKE FRAMES and gaytracing then yes you have to upgrade non stop
your friend also ripped you the fuck off with that cpu so youre going to get most of a new computer

No that's retarded unless you absolutely have to run every new shitty AAA release at max settings 4k with decent framerate

I just upgraded for the first time in 8 years

I've gone on 5-7 year cycles, but I also buy high end cards with more headroom
depending on how hard they keep going on sidegrade gimmicks, that may end up shortening

I generally recommend going high-end and upgrading no more than every other generation. Usually that means upgrading every four to five years. The small performance uplift from one generation to the next is never justified.

This. Only upgrade when a game you specifically want to play won't run on your PC. And even then, you have a lot more options on PC to dial down settings and get away with playing games with compromises.

if you dont buy entry level shit and dont upgrade your screen it'll last you the length of a console generation. We have entered an era of total graphical stagnation where the most graphically intensive games are purely due to developer incompetence.

My gpu just blew a capacitor and I've been using it since 2011. Shopping around is like waking up from a coma, wtf is all this space-age shit?

If you're building a gaming computer you should buy the top card, you can upgrade every 2 years without losing any money. Don't buy overpriced mid-range graphics cards(in this market its 5070ti and 5080)

I upgrade every 3-4 years, but to be fair, I give my pcs to my poor zoomer cousins/nephews, and that might be why I'm not so frugal.

Kek

pretty much, why the fuck would i swap my 3080 even now for anything newer that is utter shit for the money they're asking, might get myself 6070 or something in a year or two though, but couple decades ago once every 1.5-2 years was the way, cards were 300-500$ at most though

This is a myth Console retards perpetuate
Upgrading every 2 years is only mandatory if you absolutely must play all the latest games a 120fps 4k.
If you are fine whit 60-90 fps or 2k resolution than a GPU will last you 8 years.
Most console games struggle to stay at 60 fps and to not downsamle to 720p when using dynamic resolution.
All while running at usually low grafical settings.

At the end of the day the question is what game is good enough to buy a new GPU for.
Most games that push for next gen graphics are usually ass.
Ironically some of the most impressive PS5 games Like Returnal or Ratchet and Clank will run just fine on a RTX 2060.

you should only upgrade when your hardware can no longer play your games at a desirable level of performance

No because good games that need a new GPU only come out once every 10 years. Trust me, I've been playing Vidya since the days of VoodooFX and onboard graphics.

tech-illiterate richfags humblebragging about their $8000 oil change

if you're not building a new system from scratch--cpu,gpu, ram, mobo, hdd, monitor, mouse, keyboard--every 6 months you're a failure

Preach bother

Stole my wife's credit card to build my first PC- how did I do?

bodacious bait repost, bro

Still got my gtx 1080. Kinda waiting for now so I can get a better monitor/GPU/everything closer to Project Orion and play that at launch. Switch 2 will make me hold on. I don't want to buy any overpriced GPUs but I might have to in a few years

No, game optimization is just getting worse and worse. Even flagship GPUs struggle with latest games.

Aside from the logi and steelseries, fine.

good pc but a terrible use of money, overpriced stuff all around. especially the cooler and peripherals

man, the poor cope excuses

just play 60fps at 1080p and you'll be fine

A new Doom game is every five years or so, that's when I upgrade

I haven't upgraded since I built my uppermid-tier rig 7-8 years ago, and games only now are outpacing what I can play. Unfortunately I'd have to replace pretty much everything to integrate modern cpus and gpus so I'm thinking I might as well just make a second pc at this point

every doom game runs on toasters

yes

Anon...

Not anymore. It's not necessary. There's 2 approaches to this - Spend $1500 on the best GPU every 5 years, or spending $1000 on a mid-range GPU every 3 years. Personally, I go for the best GPU because VRAM is more important than ever and GPU makers are still being absolute jews about that shit. GPUs should have twice as much VRAM as they do right now. If you go mid-range, you're going to have problems with demanding games.

I honestly don't get these requirements. The game looks like shit.

im still using my 1080ti and the only game that has given me problems is mhwilds

if that's true just get a ps5 lmao

Most modern tech is in a transition period where it has to be re-engineered to accommodate AI optimizations. I wouldn't buy a phone, GPU or anything else of the sort for at least 2 more years while they get their ducks in a row. Especially phones. People that upgrade their phones more than once every 8 years are someone you don't want a shared account with.

Ditto, but in all fairness I really only play Rimworld and Battletech. I don't like AAA games. I should upgrade soon though. Juat bought 4k dollar pair of kitchen knives. I should probably put at least that much into my hobbies.

Upgrade your GPU

Nah senpai I just use GeForce Now I'm a controller player so can't feel the latency but appreciate my 4080 4k 60fps RTX gameplay for like £20 a month.

mh wilds on ps5 uses 1080p in the highest frame rate setting. that's the lowest of any game though. most games are upscaling from 1440p in performance mode and native 4k in quality mode.

OH SHIT WRONG IMOAGE THAT WAS XBOX GAME STREAMING WHICH IS SHIT SORRY NEVER NEVE USE THAT IT WILL GOVE YOU AIDS

can some non schizo explain why the background of this image is clearly AI generated

still using my 1070, feelin fine

it's weird, requirements keep going up but the games aren't really improving,

perspective

lmao no
I was perfectly fine using my GTX 980 Ti until less than a year ago

get off the internet, retard

It's ok to be blind anon, we still love you.

not an answer

what's this

Stole my wife's credit card

Does she not take it with her on her weekly trips to Detroit and Jamaica?
