Exactly. The colors and detail on it look awful. I also miss the big overbite and lanky arms and short legs. Rare's K. Rool design did an excellent job of making him both extremely goofy as well as intimidating. It fits his schizo personality, you want to laugh at him but he's always just unpredictable enough that you don't know if he's going to trip on his feet or pull out a gun and shoot you.

Also getting rid of his identity gimmick was a crime too, especially when there's so much you could do with it.

I think what pains me the most about the redesign is people going "he's SO expressive now" or "now he fits the mario world". Those two comments are just bullshit. The first one because DK was always expressive, they just like that dk is no longer a chill, laid back, lightly stoic ape but over the top and goofy and making a meme face every 5 seconds. And the second one because it basically undermines what going against the "mario mandate" was all about and wants everything to be generic slop.

I made this point last time, but I'm pretty sure the main reason they stuck with the rare design at all is because Rare already had a 3D model and they wanted to use it for mario kart instead of creating a model for the arcade design they used in the gameboy games. I'm guessing because they used that design in MK64 at all is the reason why they continued to keep it all this time, instead of him having a different design in every game he was in.

I think the game looks really fun even if I don't care for DK's new design. Terraforming the area is a neat concept for a platformer and DK's move-set seems extremely robust.

This is what I love about Rare's DK, he's a strong capable hero but he's also a cool dude that loves to relax on the beach. This is also my favorite render of him, it showcases that easygoing attitude of his and I never saw him as being permanently angry like people are saying. It's not genuine, and only AFTER Bananza was shown did people start saying that shit. I'm convinced it's either actual Nintendo shills or fans who do it for free. The movie was a way to gauge how people would feel with the new DK look. Nintendo has obviously wanted to do this for a very long time now, but had to figure out how to make that leap of faith. They now feel fully confident with it. And honestly about time.
