Signalis

It's an interesting game. Has excellent production values (if you're willing to tolerate the wobbly, unfiltered textures aesthetics and anime-stylized character portraits). Gameplay is basically classic RE, except it uses a top down perspective instead of the CCTV imitation. Has limited inventory capacity, item boxes, save rooms, dangerous respawning enemies that can be put down for good using a limited consumable (thermite flare), lots of puzzles most of which are pretty decent, lots of key items and backtracking.

The downside is that it's somewhat woke (the main character is a lesbian robot who was programmed to follow her human companion), and also overly derivative. Has a ton of silly in-your-face reddit references to Lovecraft, Robert Chambers, Silent Hill, Blame!, Evangelion, etc.

How is backtracking considered a positive?

Outside of being troon adjacent it's pretty great.

Initially interesting but loses its value after awhile as the plot takes a hard turn into semi-incomprehensible bullshit.

I wanted to leave the thread but cannot resist replying, it's a combination of parts into a greater experience. Primarily it's the aggresive, striking visuals, interesting soundtrack and general use of audio and oppressive, bittersweet vibe. Protektor Dorms is my favourite level in any game.

Exactly, you describe it well. I liked the simple but effective flashing of visuals and text on screen with the red and black colour scheme. The game wants to be heard and seen. I love the school scenes the train scene is another one in that vein, especially with the music.

really basic bitch sci-fi that's nothing new aside from its aesthetic which is just borrowed from Blame! and GitS anyway. bland yuribait plot and body horror elements means eroguro obsessed tranners flock to it and gush about how romantic it is and then treat their discord friends like replicas of characters in the game. gameplay wise it isn't very special, it's actually extremely slow which kind of breaks the experience for me, and the running animation is deeply dissatisfying and makes it feel like you're playing it wrong. the stun baton makes a great sound. sound design is probably where this title shines the most, honestly. it sure isn't the gameplay, there are these little iSpy segments where you have to click the single pixel to progress and it stinks

If you're genuinely here to ask for a short review without spoiler, and not just here trying to bait for a Signalis thread;

The game is one of those "Dark Soul/Elden Ring" story style game where it feels you a few page of info and you write the rest of the book using your own assumption/imagination.

Go try and play the game for an hour. If you like the RE style combat gameplay then go ahead, keep playing and enjoy.

But if you don't like the gameplay and you're merely tolerating the RE section in hope that you'll find answers to the main story you won't. The so called main story won't get better. Don't bother putting the hours in just to try to get something out of the main story. There won't be any satisfaction waiting for you.

Honestly I'm not sure if I liked it or disliked it.

I generally liked the story, but thought it was bordering on pretentious due to how heavily and unnecessarily obfuscated it chooses to make all the deeper plot points. There is still so much that's left up to theory/interpretation, and it rubs me the wrong way because it's not THAT cerebral, it's just the developers choosing to be obtuse to make it "deeper".

Gameplay was similar; I enjoyed the aesthetic, the settings, and world, but by the last main "zone" I was utterly checked out on the actual game, and found myself hoping it'd be over soon. To call it a slog is an understatement. The puzzles became overly repetitive (find six keys on every floor!), and how the game wants you to engage with enemies felt wildly bipolar. The game sure seems like it wants you to engage with enemies due to their aggressive placement around the levels and specific rooms, but simultaneously discourages interactions altogether by enabling random respawns. The solution to this as a player is to simply never expend resources so that they don't end up "wasted" when an enemy when decides to respawn, encouraging you to run away and avoid combat altogether. There's a lot of different guns to collect, and they'll all look very lovely in your stash while your highly limited inventory is stuffed full of keys. Unless of course, you enjoy the exercise involved in running laps between the safe room and a place of interest, because that key you found thirty minutes ago and forgot about is barring the way forward to three more keys (which you will have to double back to the safe room again for to make room just to pick them up). Hope you enjoy avoiding all those enemies every time! The game will do its best to mix you up, too, so sometimes rooms are chock full of loot (punishes you for coming prepared) and others they're utterly barren (punishes you for planning to get inventory clogged).

Might just be me, but Signalis left me frustrated.

I also didn't like how "muddy" it felt in terms of controls compared to og resi. Those tankcontrol games might be seen as "clunky" but i always knew exactly what was going on and why and i didnt have that here.
