Air Riders is marked for 2025. This would mean by the end of the year Sakurai is available to direct a game again. Considering they went out of their way to not only get him for Air Riders but also advertise he was directing it, they clearly know people look forward to his games. It wouldn't surprise me if they start Smash 6 with him later this year or early 2026.

SM was the latest mon when Ultimate came out. They won't add another mon for dlc, but each new Smash entry seems to add at least one new mon from a new gen.

Smash has pretty much always launched within the first two years of a console's life. The fact that Sakurai went to working on Air Riders right after Smash probably means Nintendo had no plans to ask him to make Smash for the next console (otherwise, they would have poached him then). Also, there is evidence they are already working on it. Smash Ultimate got a new spirit events in early 2024 which is the first time they had one in years. The last time this happened was Splatoon 2 getting Splatfest and thats because they were working on Splatoon 3 at the time. They most likely already have a team working on it.

Sakurai has only done Smash for so long (despite not working for Nintendo) because Iwata kept asking him. Iwata has long since passed, so they likely just moved it in house so they don't have to keep relying on outside staff and an outside director.

Byleth for example is way more popular with actual Smash players than Banjo.

If they don't give a fuck about Geno, that makes it easier and cheaper to put him into the game. All Nintendo has to do is ask and pay them and Square Enix gets free money. Also builds hype for a potential new Mario RPG. No downsides.
