Depends on what you want to do. AI is an incredibly broad field. My specific work was on natural language processing (NLP). I think if you aren't planning to go into a masters/PhD program (a bachelor's will make you an AI code monkey), I recommend finding a problem you're interested in solving, stealing a copy of maybe the Russel-Norvig textbook (not sure if new editions cover transformers/LLMs in any depth, but it's broad enough that it touches on most parts of AI), then just using google and google scholar to find blog posts and papers where people solve similar problems.

If you do want to get a masters/phd, make sure you find an advisor who can get you funding (do NOT pay for your own PhD, especially with how much money is currently in AI) and works on a topic that interests you.
AI is not useful for learning. LLMs produce output based on the statistics of conversations and often hallucinate incorrect things. I would encourage you to seek human-backed resources for learning.

AI isn't dead and it will certainly continue to progress, but the current fad of using LLMs as a silver bullet to problems requiring more than "reads convincingly human-like" is misguided and in my opinion, is likely to delay progress in the field.

My problem with AI is you can't ask it to solve the real time sinks. It can only help you with very simple shit that you could just do yourself. Like if you ask it to help you with a complex problem it will take you down a rabbit hole and waste your time. AI at its core is driven by data, so it can only get better, but i think it's not gonna really flourish until there's more stuff beyond text or images to train it on, like 3d models, geo scans, or audio/video content. there's just nowhere near as much of those as there are books and photos. After maybe a couple more decades i think it'll be more powerful. we'll probably end up seeing AI generate full games from verbal commands in VR at that point. stuff like "Make an RTS in a medieval setting" and it just does it on the spot.

I don't understand this sentiment. I'm not saying everything it says is correct, of course. I ask it questions, note the answer then confirm with another source that the answer is factual. It successfully answered many questions that I would have had to book office hours with difficult to reach teachers.

If AI has no use for learning then "what solutions are available to solve this problem and why do they work?" is equivalent to "solve this problem".

Taking any answer from an AI (or anyone, really) as automatically correct is crazy of course. But that's never been what I've been saying.

LLMs are not useful for learning, period, because the entire point of learning is to gain knowledge and practice. Hallucination means you cannot trust the output (forced to verify) and getting anything more than a point in the right direction, even if the AI is correct or leads you in a correct direction, shortcuts practice. There are resources besides the professor - seek assistance from peers, search for other lectures online (e.g. from EdX/MITOCW/w/e), or review old example problems. Education has been happening for millennia prior to AI and worked just fine, so it's foolish to rely on it when it is more likely to be detrimental to the learning process than beneficial.

I would consider LLMs for tasks they excel at: language, not knowledge. Translation, intent and sentiment recognition, summarization (though I speak generally negatively of LLMs, last I checked they effectively *solved* document summarization - the state of the art benchmarks match human performance). LLMs have their place, but I am not convinced that as they currently exist, that place is education. At best, I would see LLM usage in education as a supplement to writing rather than use in gaining knowledge, demonstrating reasoning, or aiding in research.

Real Deepseek (R1 or V3) you cannot run on your computer because it's too fucking big, but because it's open source there are multiple providers that run it and sell you metered service for very cheap without censorship, Kluster specifically gives you 5$ of credit for free with just an email (they used to give 100 lol).
But if you are a poorfag supreme, you can run a local "deepseek" that is smaller, but it isn't the real model, it's a Qwen distill which is far dumber and slower, but free and in your machine.

I think the current way models work isn't going to last if you want a truly intelligent system. It needs to be able to be updated with new data beyond prompt fuckery. Taking a few months to train an entirely new model sounds awful for any fast moving businesse. Plus hardware required to support a decent context limit is insanity.

It could be that my perspective is shaped by education in centers that seem only interested in churning out mass amounts of diploma holders with little regards to the quality of the eduation. A common response to questions was "you should google it". If we're at that point, I fail to see how that interaction is superior than essentially just treating the AI as a search engine.

Only improvement I've seen AI do is make image OCR translations a bit better. Basically bridging the gaps between japanese words so the sentence makes a bit more sense. Even then I have to generate few variations of the same text because the AI can still add weird hallucinations in between.

The way I see AI like this, they're basically the nicest customer support people you can encounter, and they won't ever like telling you "no" unless there's nothing else to do. If you've already told them you want 20 nuggies and 1500 calories, it won't tell you "don't do that". It'll try to find a way to make it work - it's not objectively wrong in its response. Try asking it if you can fit 20 nuggies in 500 calories a day.
