Also while DS2 has a ton of flaws, it was the one game in the franchise that tried to innovate and remix the formula the most. That by itself is more valuable than DS3's tired "we just did DS1 again but slightly worse".

What's the issue
It was my 3rd after BB and DS3. I just love that you can actually follow the plot, it's got elements of Nietzchie, levels had a 80's dark fantasy feel, and most importantly it was the most tactical least low IQ rythem game of the trilogy.
It's a distant third to ER and bloodborn, but a legitimately good game too smart for ADHD Sekiro fans or Nostalgia driven DS1 and DeS fans. Ironically the DS3 fans are the only complainers I respect, though I Kneeling to Kings Feild OGs.

The secondaries eventually start playing the older games
The secondaries finally see the hundreds of references from the earlier games
They hate the slow combat and hated the even slower combat from the second title
Eventually the secondary influencers get filtered by DS2 and their zoomer fanbase makes threads attacking DS2
DS2 autists correctly identified the attacks as coming from the secondaries and made threads exposing DS3 as the uninspired derivative trash that it is
DS3 zoomers try to bring their shitty streamer memes here(lava elevator) to no avail
Complete victory for DS2 autists and to celebrate they make threads to gloat about it every other day
TLDR: It's an overreaction to the influx of DS3 secondaries thinking their rollslop is the standard of Dark Souls games.

Dark Souls 2 in the current year of 2025 is an okay game if you're willing to forgive a lot of its flaws. It still pulls off the "Souls formula" better than the vast majority of Souls clones, it just doesn't have the polish or vision of the other Fromsoft titles. That's it, there's nothing more to discuss. You don't need to vegetate in front of a quadrillion hours of YouTube pseudo-intellectual analysis. You can just move on.
Just finished my first run of DS2 and it's great, never really looked into what people bitched so hard about but it really wasn't bad at all. I started playing DS3 today and it's beautiful but gameplay wise it's just a complete downgrade. They turned up the floaty rollslop feel to 11 and I hate it.

There's an argument to be made that lifegems are simply a different kind of game design, not an automatically bad one. Since it's an RPG you're expending limited resources to mitigate damage. My first souls game was Demon's back in 2009 and I have played every game in the series, and there's no game in the series I like to replay as much as 2. To me it's a timeless misunderstood classic. It's still a good fucking game. The reason it's a pissing contest between DS2-fags and DS3-fags is because the latter game is complete fucking slop and doesn't even have the excuse of a ridiculously troubled development cycle to mitigate it, everything it does wrong is a choice, and in fact it basically undid every change both good and bad that Dark Souls 2 brought, and instead of just returning to its roots elected to fuck the series up in a completely different and arguably worse way by turning it into soulless rollspam where the level design doesn't matter and every boss needs to be a spastic flailing retard with a sweeping orchestral soundtrack that hits you for 7/8ths of your health bar and turning the game into DDR instead of an action RPG.

Elden Ring tanks can take one extra hit before dying, like the Dark Souls tank didn't invest anything in STR or DEX, not for a lack of desire, but because they didn't have the millions of runes required after paying the VIG tax.

I was the opposite until Dark Souls 3. In Dark Souls I would get to 15 vigor and stop, it was more than enough to tank a few hits, and more importantly left me plenty of space to immediately bumrush STR to 40 so I can grab the fattest, heaviest piece of shit weapon I could find and go bananas.

Playing that section when the DLC was brand new was fun. Dark souls/fromsoft games have moved away from longer endurance style levels (checkpoints are more common and nearly every boss in Elden Ring has a 10 second boss run. I think the snow field is unfairly hated because it dared to do something different and people can skip it if they want because nothing major is behind the double tiger boss anyway.
